I've been on Zocor for a couple of years now. Initially, I think you
have to have liver tests, but I haven't had any side effects, except for
a nicely plummeting LDL.

This is not to say that one shouldn't emphasize "good" fats, i.e.,
monounsaturated ones.
As to meds, the most common is Lipitor (atorvastatin). It has few
side-effects and seems to work well.

I once tested with, Well,,, A bit of blood in my cholesterol might be the
funny way to say it. (Blood was actually cream colored instead of red)
I was put on assorted lipid medications. Last cholesterol readings were
HDL: normal
LDL: normal
TOTAL: normal
Risk factor: NORMAL
Triglycerides: NORMAL
So the medication is effective
Some of the lipid meds affect sexual performance. Some can affect liver
I would read the Patient Provided Information sheets that the pharmacy gives
you.
One of the lipid modification drugs they may try is Nician, (Niaspan is the
one I tried) This one turned out to have no effect on my blood profile but
it gave me some serious other problems. Occasional "Flushing"
Imagine taking a bath in mild acid or itching powder. ALL OVER THE BODY.
It was not fun.
No lasting harm however, discontinued the drug and the symptoms were
discontinued as well.
