Subject: Innate = Spirit (also: Dog subluxations - and Dr. DD Palmer: 'My own son put me in prison'...)
In anticipation of Joseph Mercola, DO posting for comment Dr. Bruce Lipton's
The Evolving Science of Chiropractic Philosophy Part II (see
www.mercola.com)...

I thought I'd discuss something Bruce Lipton, PhD says in Part II,

"[Innate as] 'spirit'...[and]...Auto-suggestion...as a cause of
dis-ease...were eliminated in an effort to make Chiropractic more
'scientific,' more acceptable to the 'conventional' world...In 1907,
chiropractors rejected D. D. Palmer's philosophy as being too religious or
metaphysical..."

OPEN LETTER (archived for global access***)

Bruce Lipton, PhD

Bruce,

You quoted Dr. DD Palmer's 1910 text in discussing changes in his philosophy
which you indicate occurred in 1907 (see quote above)...

DD's 1910 text adjusts the chiropractic philosophy of his son BJ Palmer, DC.

BJ's followers say BJ was the "Developer" of chiropractic.

DD called BJ "the [E]nveloper" [1910:701] - see below for some of DD's
reasoning...

In BJ's defense:  Via the medical practice acts, MDs were imprisoning
chiropractors for not having medical educations/licenses.

THEN AGAIN...

You write:

"DD Palmer was expelled from the Palmer School of Chiropractic...His
chiropractic philosophy was subsequently altered, removing the concept of
'spirit' from Innate..."
http://www.spiritcrossing.com/lipton/chiro2.shtm

You did not mention it was *BJ* who expelled DD...

BJ expelled DD right after DD signed over the school (to an MD? - BJ's wife
Mabel?) to safeguard himself and his school just before getting out of jail
jfor practicing medicine without a license - at least I think I'm
remembering this latter point correctly from Gielow's (sp) book Old Dad
Chiro...

DD later wrote:  "Little did I think then that my own son would

play the Judas, put me in prison, rob me financially and of credit justly
due me." [1910:629; see also 290 and 334]
http://www.chiroweb.com/archives/15/11/21.html

So perhaps it wasn't just MDs who had DD imprisoned?  Maybe *BJ* manipulated
the system to have DD imprisoned in order to "legally" rob DD of his school?

I sure hope not - but DD does say:  "[M]y own son...put me in prison."

(I have seen no discussion of DD's comment in the chiropractic literature.
If any readers know of any articles which discuss it, I would appreciate
cites and quotes.)

Regardless whether BJ put DD in prison - regardless whether BJ "removed the
concept of 'spirit' from Innate" - BJ did imprison Innate in the skull.

DD once wrote (in reply to one of his first students - not BJ):

"Spirit, as generally understood, is what I designate as Innate...Did I say
anything about nerves being innate?  Nerves are not Innate...Did
anyone else get the idea that nerves were Innate?" [Palmer DD 1910:382]

Did *BJ* teach that Innate was no longer spirit?

If not, WHO in chiropractic was responsible for "removing the concept of
'spirit' from Innate"?

I noted in 1997:

>>BJ "threw out the nervous system" and "just had to put something in its

place," so he installed Innate Intelligence in the brain so that another
BJ invention, "Direct Mental Impulse," could course "from above-down"
through "pinched" spinal nerves... - so that BJ could make bundles of money
teaching chiropractic students how to relieve interverterbral foraminal
"pinching" by adjusting the spine.<<

See Environmental subluxations
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=6111...

I HAD ALWAYS ASSUMED THAT DIRECT MENTAL IMPULSE WAS BJ'S VERSION OF INNATE
SPIRIT.

Am I wrong about this?

Back to **DD's** Innate - as in ""Spirit, as generally understood, is what I
designate as Innate."

QUESTION:  Did/does the Allopath's Vis Medicatrix Naturae have any Spirit in
it?

DD apparently thought so:  He indicated that his concept of Innate was
identical to "the Allopath's Vis Medicatrix Naturae," as in,

"...[T]hat which knows much better how to mend a fractured bone the first
day of its life than the surgeon will ever know; that intellect which is
known as Hahneman's Vital Force; New Thought's Divine Spark; Hudson's
Subconscious Mind; the Allopath's Vis Medicatrix Naturae; the healing power
of nature...[is the same as - TDG]...D.D. Palmer's Innate Intelligence..."
[1910:864]

I mentioned DD's Innate/VisMedicatrixNaturae identity on the usenet about
three years ago - in the process of noting that the Association of
Chiropractic Colleges got DD's concept of Innate exactly backwards...

TALK ABOUT TAKING THE SPIRIT OUT OF INNATE!

Incredibly, ACC Position Paper #1 (ACC is the Association of Chiropractic
Colleges) states the Founder's "Innate" principle
exactly backwards...

According to the Founder, the body's innate recuperative power ("Innate") -
forwards the same impulses in health and disease; yet according to ACC
Position Paper #1, the chiropractic principle is that "The body's innate
recuperative power is affected by...the nervous system."

Why would ACC state as "The Chiropractic Paradigm/Principle," a principle
diametrically opposed to the Founder's principle that Innate
irritates/affects
the nervous system to cause health?

Has ACC (15 chiropractic college presidents and a chiropractic college dean)
finally bought BJs claim that the nervous system controls the body from
"Above Down Inside Out"?

KEY point:  The Founder of Chiropractic believed that the body was NOT
controlled by the
nervous system - but rather by WHAT IRRITATES the nervous system.

DD once asked:

"Did I say anything about nerves being innate?  Nerves are not Innate...Did
anyone else get the idea that nerves were Innate?" [Palmer DD 1910:382]

According to physiologist Arthur Guyton [1976]:

"Most activites of the nervous system are originated by sensory experience
emanating from sensory receptors" [Guyton AH. 5th ed., 1976:608]

And according to anatomist Hollinshead [197_]:

"The basic function of the nervous system is to connect a receptor to an
effector organ." [W.H. Hollinshead. Textbook of Anatomy 3rd ed. Harper and
Row, p. 68]

D.D. stated the same concept:  "Nerves have but two functions - conveying
impulses outward and sensations inward." [Palmer DD. The Science, Art and
Philosophy of Chiropractic. Portland, OR: Portland Printing House Co.
1910:510]

D.D. openly indicated that all healing arts of his day employed a
diagnostic/treatment concept that was identical to his Innate
diagnostic trick...

D.D. wrote:

"...[T]hat which knows much better how to mend a fractured bone the first
day of its life than the surgeon will ever know; that intellect which is
known as Hahneman's Vital Force; New Thought's Divine Spark; Hudson's
Subconscious Mind; the Allopath's Vis Medicatrix Naturae; the healing power
of nature...[is the same as - TDG]...D.D. Palmer's Innate Intelligence..."
[1910:864]

According to D.D., Innate Intelligence irritated the nervous system to cause
health.  Using this chiropractic diagnostic trick, he hypothesized that if
someone was sick, SOMETHING in the external/internal environment was or had
been noxiously irritating the nervous system...

Accordingly, he advised (note: I'm paraphrasing DD via WD Harper):

FIRST identify and adjust subluxations in the external environment.

SECOND identify and adjust subluxations in the internal environment; keeping
in mind the possibility that external environmental irritation has altered
the internal environment to cause IT to noxiously irritate ITSELF via:

a) secondary MECHANICAL irritants ("vertebral subluxations");

b) secondary CHEMICAL irritants (unsuitable ingesta or inappropriate
medications);

c) secondary PSYCHIC irritants ("mental impingements"/outside minds that
perpetuate a and b).

RB Livingston, MD similarly writes in the 1985 edition of Best and Taylor's
Physiologic Basis of Medical Practice:

"Aware of sensory physiology, you will readily retain the following
practical principles:  First, many processes intervene between stimulation
of peripheral receptors and higher perceptual centers...There needs to be a
leavening of self-doubt in the physician's mind as to the possibility of as
yet unrecognized and as yet undiscovered sensory intrusions that may also be
contributing influentially to the patient's perceptual experiences."

THE PRIMACY OF THE ENVIRONMENT...

Bruce Lipton, PhD wrote of "obvious subluxations" in dogs:

"Consider the relationship between a powerful alpha-male dog and a dog of
lesser rank. The latter will acquire a protective submissive posture,
lowered head and body, in order to avoid inciting the wrath of the
alpha-male. After holding this posture for a long time (i.e., a chronic
protection response), the dog's spine will acquire obvious subluxations that
would adversely impact its health. A spinal adjustment would alleviate these
subluxations."
http://www.spiritcrossing.com/lipton/chiro2.shtm

I know of NO scientific evidence that subluxations - "obvious" or
otherwise - exist and cause disease and stop causing disease when adjusted.

So far, vertebral subluxations - as much as I believe in them - appear to be
just as ethereal as DD's Innate and BJ's Direct Mental Impulse.

I hope that Bruce will publish any evidence that he knows of that vertebral
subluxations exist and cause disease and stop causing disease when adjusted.

Bruce wrote further:

"However, if the dog returns to the same environment, it will continue to
perceive a need for a protection posture. Under such circumstances, the dog'
s Educated mind will employ auto-suggestion mechanisms that will return the
spine to its subluxated condition. In addition to the adjustment, the dog
will need to either alter its environment or alter its perceptions, in order
to remain free of dis-ease.
http://www.spiritcrossing.com/lipton/chiro2.shtm

Perceptions are PART of the environment...DD called perceptions "mental
impingements" when he perceived them to be erroneous...

DD adjusted via education ("Chiropractic came as an educator," he wrote)...

Here is what DD wrote when he found BJ's "Developer" "luxation" (this is
FUNNY!):

"I have analyzed the symptoms, and am now tracing The Chiropractor [BJ's
journal, originally founded by DD - TDG] in order to locate the luxation
causing aberration and kleptomania. I find on page 15 of the July number,
'Everything is tried but the right thing-adjusting the cause-which remained
for D. D. Palmer to discover.' In this same number is advertised, 'The
Science of Chiropractic, by Dr. D. D. Palmer, Discoverer and Developer.' Up
to this date every vertebra examined showed proper alignment; due respect
was paid by the son to his father for his untiring research from the time B.
J., the son, was seven years of age up to three years ago. If the symptoms
of aberration and kleptomania continue to increase, some number of the
Chiropractor in the near future will give the date of the father's
graduation as later than that of his son...I have found the luxation on page
59 of the August and September number, 1907. It shows symptoms of
aberration, hallucination, mental wandering, divergence from the truth and a
well-defined case of kleptomania. The reader may notice the mental
derangement, the incoherent, disjointed expressions, that have little
relation to the subject; the delusions of the patient [BJ], imagining
himself to be the discoverer, developer and Founder of Chiropractic...It is
to be hoped that this adjustment may bring [BJ] to his senses, relieve him
from kleptomania and wandering from the paths of truth and moral rectitude."
[1910:752]

BJ's perception of chiropractic - his subluxation OF chiropractic - endures
in part because of enduring CENSORSHIP (which I myself experienced in 2000
when the American Chiropractic Association attempted to censor "my"
DD-Palmer-based definition of chiropractic from Dorland's Illustrated
Medical Dictionary)...

Here is Wardwell [1992] quoting Terrett [1986] regarding the censorship of
Dr. DD Palmer...

"All copies [of DD's The Chiropractor's Adjuster (1910)] were quickly bought
up and destroyed.  You could not get a copy anyplace at any price.  In fact,
you could not find a copy for 'love or money.'  The leaders of the
profession did not want the world to know anything about the teachings of
old Dr. Daniel D. Palmer...The early leaders then greatly distorted their
founder's science, philosophy and vision for chiropractic..." [Wardwell WI.
Chiropractic: History and Evolution of a New Profession. St.
Louis: Mosby. 1992:101 quoting Terrett Allen CJ. The genius of DD Palmer.
Journal of the Australian
Chiropractors' Association. 1986;16(4):150-58.]

The environment is *badly* subluxated in regard to Dr. DD Palmer's "Primacy
of the Environment" contribution to health care.

I am glad that Bruce "Primacy of the Environment" Lipton, PhD is reading Dr.
DD Palmer.

Thanks for reading,

Sincerely,

Todd

PS  More on DOG SUBLUXATIONS...

The American Chiropractic Association writes:  "'VETERINARY'
CHIROPRACTIC...Resolved, that the application of manipulative techniques to
animals may constitute a form of veterinary procedure but does not
constitute what is commonly defined by this Association and a majority of
States as 'chiropractic.' But [sic] it further...Resolved, that the term
'veterinary chiropractic' is a misnomer, and should not be used when
referring to the application of manipulative techniques to animals.
(Ratified by the House of Delegates, July 1994)."
http://www.amerchiro.org/about/policies.shtml

Chirovetpractor Robert Hathaway, DVM writes:  "A much more accurate
definition of 'Chirovetpractic' is put forth by Todd Gastaldo, D.C. as
follows...Chirovetpractic...a science of neurophysiologic diagnosis which
holds that the body is NOT controlled by the nervous system but rather by
WHAT IRRITATES the nervous system. Chirovetpractic's 'diagnostic trick' is
the notion of an Innate/God force which always irritates the nervous system
to cause health - which means that if an animal is sick - noxious irritants
in the internal, and external environments have to be identified, and
removed/adjusted. These latter irritants - be they mechanical, chemical or
psychic - be they in the internal and/or external environments - are
diagnosed via a knowledge of neurophysiology and removed/adjusted via
educational adjustments and/or by adjustments administered with the hands
directly."
