MFW had 1129 different users post in that time frame.
540 of those users made only 1 post.
196 made only 2 posts
253 made between 3 and 10 posts (inclusive)
44 people accounted for 50% of traffic.
(traffic meaning total posts)
The data is reasonably accurate, but not exaclty precise. The more I
massage it, the more accurate it will become, but it is pretty meaningful as
it is.
I also have records of the length of posts, the time of day, day of
week, newsreader used, user ISP addresses, reverse traceroutes, and lots of
other stuff that will be really cool to play with. As I come up with more,
I'll post it. I'll post the top 26 posters ranked per volume of posts in
the follow-up to this message.

Very interesting insight. Thanks for taking the time to write the

When will it be available as freeware on Tucows?

Ya know...spammers/marketers may find this useful. IOW, you may have
something here.
Any way you could make it a plug in to say FreeAgent/Agent? If you work
on it 'smore maybe contact Forte' Inc to see if they are interested.
This is pretty useful when someone finds a new usenet group and wants to
know who the frequent posters are...it would give an idea of who may be
good people to pay more attention too.
For example I started reading rec.guns, and a few rec.aviation groups
recently. If I could get the info above plus the top 25 or so posters
it would save me time as to who are the regulars.
Does your software sniff out duplicate posts?
I can see it being useful to add people to kill filters based on certain
criteria.

Yes, this is bothering me too. Am I not GOOD enough for parentheses, is that
it? And what about those with no added extras? Do they all sit around and
ridicule the quoties and the parennies?
Anyway, us quoties make a formidable team. Don't make us angry. You

No self-respecting male who has ever gotten to first base in his life
would ever write someone like Greg Zulak for sexual advice. Now,
if Frank Sepe was writing such a column, he could probably dispense
some great advice, because Frank has to beat the babes off with a stick.
Sadly, the only beating Greg Zulak engages in is the flogging of his
privates.

Yes, Lyle has been noticably absent the past few weeks, which skews the
data. Also, Bill ROberts' data may be a bit off as well. One, he's using
the anon server. (However I can easily account for that, I just haven't
done it yet.) Two, He's been a lot quieter the past week or so as well. He
may very well (and probably is) in the top 26 when I take those two things
into account.

I just used info from the "From" value field to sort the number of posts

Heh, it was very late when I slapped this up last night. That musta
slipped by me. That may be Roberts, or it may be a rouge news server that
mis-ordered a value field. When I get home, I can figure it out. Actually,
I think it may be Bill. His headers do, in fact, contain that string, and
most other peoples don't. Hey, this was the first pass, it was past
midnight and I was on Percocet. Gimme some slack.
> >10. "Pete" 123
> >11. Dean C. Harris 120

> Damn. Missed the Top 10 by a pathetic 4 posts!
Actually, I *think* you may be one of the ones who will gain a few more
posts when I run the data through another filter or two. The first pass I
was VERY strict on making POSITIVE matches. This kept phonies from messing
up the data. (Like those guys who post as Schuh. I'm very sure only posts
made by Robert himself were attributed to him.) The downside of this is
that a few posts that may actually be valid, I didn't count because of some
small inconsistancy, even though they were legitimate. When I looked at the
posts I rejected, and can see why, I'll add a filter to let them pass, which
will up the scores a bit. (I know for a fact that Will Brinks numbers will
go up some. Everytime he reloaded or re-setup his newsreader the past week
or so, we kicked out his posts cuz we saw something looked odd. While not
accurate, that's exactly what it should have done.)
>

I dunno. Since it's 80% automatic right now, what I might end up doing
is having it run completely automatically and link the results to a web
site. That way, you could go search for whatever you want, whenever you
want, using whatever specs you want.

It may be that your sole purpose in life
is to serve as a warning to others.
<sigh> Yes, that is correct Bob. More precisely, Kevin is the ONLY
one in caps because he is the ONLY one who typed his name in his newsreader
in caps. The quotes/parentheses thing is a function of either which
newsreader you use or which news server you use, not something the user
intentionally does themselves, as is the case in Kevin's situation.
Either that, or I decided to capitalize his name because I wanted to
single him out for ridicule, and thought the subtle annoyance of having his
named SHOUTED would make everybody laugh at him and he would henceforth be
shunned by mfw.

I might have, since she posts a fair bit and I also had a week or week-and-a-

Another possibility is that due to the anonymous server, the posts weren't

Lionel "Deebieboy" Bienvenue!!!!!! Do you have the hots for

NOTHING about soccer just a few years ago. And it is a pretty
good show for those of us too *cheap* to get Fox Sports World's

Kev, Kev, Kev, the Rangers locked this up WEEKS ago. They could
have lost all their games for the last third of the season or
something like that and they _still_ would have come in first.
They just RUTS all over the Scottish League ($1 to that slacker
Haggerty, who would also have been in the top 26 if it weren't
for finals or some lame excuse like that.)
Next you're going to have to start watching your local MLS team
(Major League Soccer for you plebes that are not up with the
times). 'Course the Miami team is kinda lame, but Tampa Bay is
in first place in their division. (What! They're both in
Florida, what more do you want? MLS is now talking about
renegging on putting a team in Seattle, the slime!)
Anything else you'd like to know? :-)

I just took a look at the data file and indeed, you are the mysterious
X-Comments2, who finished in sixth place. The problem came about because
Newsfeeds.Com follows a very unusual (although quit valid) practice of
placing the From: field at the end of the header. Since this was just a
first pass filter, I didn't bother scanning the entire headers, so it gave
up and just reported the last field it read, even though it knew it was from
the same individual. I manually checked a few of them, and indeed, it is
you.
I was a bit afraid that I wouldn't be able to tell you and Pete apart,
since he's now apparently using the same anonymous service. However, after
looking at it, that will be no sweat.

A somewhat-bothersome feature of this particular server is
that you have no choice in the matter: your posts WILL be
as "Anonymous."
You do have a choice in the return e-mail given in the headers,
but not the name itself.
As for myself, the points of it are to make it non-trivial for
some third-party do a search using only my name and known e-mails,
and also to leave no trail of the particular computer used
to post, since I am under some restrictions in that regard.

I support Aberdeen, who finished bottom of the league this year, which
is the first time in our 98 year history that this has happened. It's
a far far away from the time when we were Europes best team. We beat
Bayern Munich in the quarter of the Euro Cup Winners Cup, We beat Real
Madrid in the final, we then went on to beat Hamburg (the European
Champions) over two legs in the Super Cup.
Alex Ferguson (manager of Man UTD) was the manager then.
We are in the Scottish Cup final though, so if you get the chance to

So what you're trying to say is that explaining that spending time on a
computer to explain your spending time on a computer is also a waste of
time?
What if someone explains that the explanation for the time spent to explain
spending time on a computer explaining you're spending time on the computer?
Is that also a waste of time?
Or is spending time on a computer a waste of time anyway, and any
explanation for that should be considered more wast of time.
