Mike is right. If you have the self discipline to not spend more than
you can pay in full each month, why not enjoy the convenience and
delayed payment of essentially borrowing the credit card company's
money for free. And credit cards give you some protections not
available if paying by check or cash.
An aside -- it is, also, important to note that while those new "check
cards" are almost accepted like credit cards and do not allow one to
spend money he does not have, the money comes out of your account
immediately. IMO one should think twice before mail ordering something
on one of those check cards. I say this because someone at work mail
ordered something using his check card and had it debited 3 times from
his account. At least with a credit card one has the opportunity to
review the bill before paying it.

I don't. I have one credit card, an American Express, and it's used JUST
for emergencies.
Either you take a check, money order or cash from me, or I don't do
business with you.

That is odd. Why? You do know if you have a reasonably good credit
rating that you can get a card that has no annual fee and no interest
charges if you pay the balance in full each month. Esentially making
the card "free".

Yo dude, it's not 1964 anymore.
Kevin, I think someone has a crush on you.

I have to, again, give a plug for Citibank's charge dispute dept.
They are pit bulls. Whenever I order from somewhere that makes me a
little uneasy that is the card I reach for.
Pay by check, or money order or cash and you are shit outta luck
unless you want to hire a lawyer.

You guys make it sound like I don't pay with a credit card EVER. Quite to the
contrary my AMEX bill is around $ 1,200 a month. It's nice too have it as a way to
go if I don't get what I paid for. AMEX will get a reversal of the charges if I
have a problem with something defective. So I do use a card it just happens to be
AMEX only.
I had a bad experience with a VISA when I worked at the U of Miami, and had a card
I got through my credit union. I vowed at that point to never to get another VISA,
DISCOVER or MC.

Do you guys have VISA over there?
Kevin
If I may ad my two cents here: I have had a Citibank Visa card since 1987
and it has been the best credit card I have ever had. They have by far the
best customer service. I have had the misfortune of having to dispute
charges on several occassions and Citibank has stood by me. They backed me
up when a loose fuse fell out of my fusebox and an opportunistic service
station charged me for new wiring to the tune of $450. (wiring that they
never actually replaced) There are other examples but you get the point.
As for Amex, they are impossible to deal with from a retailer perspective.
They take nearly 4% off the top of each of your sales. The transactions
must be entered seperate from Visa/MC and Discover in your book keeping
program and they have a reputation for really sticking it to the retailer.
In their desire to provide their "members" with top level service, the
retailer gets screwed. An Amex cardmember needs no proof to dispute a
charge. They simply call amex and say anything and amex removes the charge
and charges it back to the merchant. It opens up a lot of potential for
fraud.
Say Joe Blow buys a container of Celltech from me using an Amex card.
Muscletech advertises a lean mass gain of 10lbs in 7 days. So, Joe Blow
uses his entire container of Celltech and hasn't gained ten pounds. He
calls Amex and tells them the product was misrepresented and Amex charges
back the merchant. Fair?

You have $1,200 a month in emergencies?
- Tommy
Lol, these backward 'mericans
Crazy as it seems, my wife has had a smartcard for four years now. In South
Africa. Our electronic banking is and always has been way ahead of the USA.
It has more to do with the banks putting a higher priority on electronic banking
than in the USA. I hardly ever go into a branch anymore.

Paying by cash is never vulgar, contrary to popular belief. :)
Actually, we have the SmartCard stuff. I just don't need a credit card at
the minute.

Can I say "me too". I rarely go into my bank for anything. Except for the
occasional armed robbery, of course.

I thoughtso, so what does a chicken, sheep and a cow fetch these days? A plow?
