1. If I eat a lot of protein this helps build muscle (as long as I lift
as well).
2. Protein AFAIK does not really turn to fat
3. So if I do cardio at a low pace, ie the fat burning zone, where a
high percenatge of weight loss is fat and not muscle (although overall
I know the fat loss is still smaller than if doing really hard cardio
work - I think this is pretty much accepted) and take protein and lift,
wont I gain muscle and lose fat, or at least manage to keep my fat as
it is.
4. I understand carbs are required as well to fuel muscles and these
carbs if not used can turn to fat, but surely if I eat enough to fuel
my muscles and burn the rest off with cardio (in the fat loss zone)
there wont be any left to turn to fat.
Also people say to eat loads to gain muscle, but dont I just need to
eat a lot of protein and enough carbs to fuel my muscles during a
workout. I cant see eating a lot of fat will help gain muscle.
Im not saying the above is correct (and I know it isnt as if it was
then it'd make life a lot easier) but I cant understand why it isnt
correct.
I hope I can understand it a bit better once I have read your comments.

Maybe but probably not. There are a lot of assumptions in the above
paragraph which aren't necessarily true for most people most of the
time - the whole "fat burning zone" is basically a myth - how it works
is more complicated than simply finding a target heart rate and not
worrying about anything else.

What causes your body to store fat and what it uses for fuel when
exercising are two different, albeit related, questions.

Post your age, height, weight, sex, current eating and exercise habits,
along with where you'd like to go in terms of body composition,
strength, etc., and ask for advice about what to do next. Understanding
is just a delaying tactic - formulate a plan and follow it if you wish
to improve.

Fat is created when you eat excess calories. The excess calories can
also go to restore glycogen reserves, to repair damaged muscle fiber,
etc. Eating lots and needling lots of calories to fuel/repair exercise
means you're less likely to store the excess calories as fat, but there
really isn't any way that you can claim you won't add to your fat stores
by only eating protein if you eat too much protein for your calorie
requirements.

If you eat less calories than you burn you will lose weight. To
partition the weight loss more towards fat and less towards LBM you
should lift weights. Personally, I think the long-slow-cardio is
bullshit for fat loss. All it does is teach me that I may need to dip
into those fat stores so hold onto them for the future. I prefer high
intensity interval training that teaches me how to get fuel rapidly into
my muscles and random moments. Yes, it comes more from glycogen
reserves, but then calories are burned restoring the glycogen reserves,
so who cares when the exact calories are burned? I think it's
metabolically better to do high intensity. I credit it with helping
cure my Syndrome X a few years ago.

You mean if your exercise burns more calories than the calories you
consumed you won't gain fat? I'd agree with that. But I think you're
making Carbs have magical powers they don't have. In my (untutored)
opinion you need carbs for fiber and phytonutrients. You can fuel most
activities just fine without carbs, but your bowels won't thank you for
it and you need to get anti-oxidants and oxylates and all sorts of
micronutrients from fruits & vegetables so you don't get cancer and your
eyes won't rot, etc. etc.
> Also people say to eat loads to gain muscle, but dont I just need to

Fat does two things. It makes you sated on fewer calories, and it
provides some essential fatty acids that your body needs to operate
properly. It's also pretty hard to get lots of protein without getting
fats. Aim to get most of your fats from seeds or nuts or fish oils,
rather than saturated fats or trans-fatty acids like shortening.
> Im not saying the above is correct (and I know it isnt as if it was
> then it'd make life a lot easier) but I cant understand why it isnt

You're not looking at your body holistically. You're also missing the
basic equation of catabolic and anabolic diets: if you're eating fewer
calories than you're burning then you will lose weight. You can aim to
preserve LBM, but you can't expect to get big muscles while burning fat.
And conversely, you can't just gain muscle when you're bulking, you
also gain fat. After the newbie phase you have to swing between cutting
and bulking.
Newbies get a grace period where they get to build muscles while losing
fat for maybe six months or so. These newbie gains are a gift from the
Gods and not to be squandered or taken for granted. You get them once.

Another sizable segment of the male population is pretty good at lying
to themselves about the shape they are in. I see a lot of people
estimate themselves as being 'around 10%' bodyfat where there is no
discernable defintion at all in the abs or anywhere else. I normally
figure the actual number is almost double.
In western culture, anyhow, in-shape females tend to think they are
fatter than they really are and males tend to think they are leaner than
they really are.
Plus the pigging out thing...
I'm another person who has never bulked up.

I know that I gained muscle while losing weight overall, but it wasn't a
big gain or loss either way. I went from 205 to 187 at 6' tall and
bounced back to around 192 where I am now. But due to the muscle gain
people thought I lost a lot more weight. I don't think my bodyfat has
ever been much below 15%. Never had it measured but it sure as hell
wasn't anywhere near 10.

Damn fine. :-)
My bodyweight went from 150 lbs. to 180 lbs. Benching, what, sixty
pounds (one of those plastic/concrete Sears sets) to 170 for a triple
(yes, I'm a giant!), 250 lbs. ass-to-the-grass squat for a double, and
a 365 lbs. deadlift. Clean and push press of 150 lbs. As well as
whistles from the ladies and a girlfriend who would often exclaim "You

I'll never be Mr. Podunk much less Olympia and, with my eight-foot long

Well, you ought to be able to notice if you're packing on pounds of fat.
Your belt will be tighter, for example. I've heard good things about

I've often read about food diaries, but have you done a time diary?
Budgeting your time must be somewhere near as important as budgeting
your food intake, doesn't it?
I don't do cardio daily although I'm sure my heart would benefit and my
blood pressure would thank me. Where does my time go? I can't believe
that it's impossible for me to fit at least twenty minutes of cardio of
some kind into each 24-hour period. Ridiculous.
The gym's hours aren't cooperating, but I'm also not cooperating with

Those numbers really don't tell much. I'm about the same height and

Try reading the subject line sometime.
It is not possible to turn fat into muscle.
Just thought that you might want to pay attention to the details
sometime.

Just as it's not possible to turn your skull's contents into brain
tissue? Yeah.

Okay, Cunt James, what ever the ass-hole says.
Ha, ... Hah, Ha!
What a rube.
You cannot turn fat into muscle. Just thought that you might want to
know, Cunt.

JMW beat you to it. Yes, you've, once AGAIN, proven yourself late on
the draw.

And what is this rube stuff? Are you from 1950? Just arrived in your
time machine? Still, I'll see your rube and raise you a nincompoop,
Mr-Nincompoop-Moonbat.

No shit. They're different tissues. THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR
CONTRIBUTION! You can, however, exchange one for the other. Reducing
your body fat and replacing it with lean body mass.

No surprise, however, that you'd be able to spell incompetence
correctly. I mean, you must be so familiar with that word. ;-)

I'd say that makes a lot of sense, Dally, but that's not why I offered
that observation. I was only typing /out loud/ over the inadequacy of
offering numbers without a picture. Numbers or stats such as height and
weight don't tell the whole story at all.
And DAMN! Nearing 4 a.m. I just can't get a regular sleep schedule down
to anything even remotely resembling a science. Unless we're talking
Dr. Frankenstein's lab.

Hello, Mr. No-Sleep, who offers weightlifting advice.
You need sleep to gain muscle.
Just thought that you might start with yourself. Somebody might
actually believe the crap that you write and be harmed by it.
Ha, ... Hah, Ha! What a fool the Cunt is!
Bald :(
Graying beard :(
Abuser of children :(

You have absolutely no qualifications to pontificate on these ngs.

As opposed to John Gohde, who is toothless, weak, and mentally ill.
Like I told you before, I look like a Greek god with a full head of
naturally dark brown hair.
Now where is your defective picture, JMW? I want to see just how funny
you look. Too wimpy to wear sleeveless shirts no doubt.
You have my condolences.
Bald is all good. I'm much happier with the mousse, hairspray, barber
or /salon/ bills, and time spent on hair. The goatee eliminates some of
the shaving time necessary to present what I call a professional
appearance. And I don't mind the gray one bit.
Abuser of children? Well, many of my students aren't crazy about
sitting quietly during instruction time, but I doubt that's the kind of
abuse ol' Nincompoop-Moonbat is yammering on about.
> As opposed to John Gohde, who is toothless,

Lemme give this my best Rain Man:
Yeah, definitely. Definitely take the bald and the graying beard over
toothless and weak. Definitely.

You are a pussy, John Gohde. You have a web site and your own domain

Well, it saves maintenance throughout the day. However, it takes me
as long to shave my head in the morning as blow-drying did when I had
blond hair down to my shoulders 30 years ago. I use a Braun electric;
otherwise, I would go through blades like crazy. Even with the
electric, I need a new foil and cutter block every six months.
>Bald is all good.
The "Hair club for men's failure group" says that, everyone says
"LOSER".

More time for kiddie porn.

Most gay men have goatees, it's their "testicular padding" to keep
their chin from getting bruised.

Yes, do look like a streetwalker, so it is effective.

Unfortuneately your idea of "sitting quietly" requires them to sit on
your lap, and that no doubt stirs up your 1.5" of boyhood.

First of all, teaching art to a bunch of kiddies makes you a sissy-man.
You definitely do NOT live in the real world. Probably explains why
you are always on these ngs.
Just thought that you might want to know, Sissy!

Typical ass-hole response.
Don't know what to with hair, so just shave it off. And, too lazy to
shave in the mornings. It probably takes you a month for your beard to
grow at all. No male hormones, I guess, Girlie-Man? :(
You have my condolences.

Not really, it's a typical "loser response", but he qualifies for both
titles.

Since we're weighing in with opinions on your life, let me add that I
think it takes incredible stamina, patience and good humor to teach art
to a bunch of kiddies. Way to go, man. What's your training regimen?
Dally

Who is Dally?
Ha, ... Hah, Ha! Must be another Sissy-Man?

Yes, that's her, er him, er it...
> I think it takes incredible stamina, patience

Patience and a sense of humor are absolute requirements of the job, in
my opinion. I like to think I have a lot of both.
Thank you for the attaboy. ;-)
My training regimen is bigtime cardio or that's my focus, but I also
follow a routine based on one I found in a MuscleTech advertisement:
Day 1, chest, biceps:
db bench, incline db press, flyes, db curls, bar curls
Day 2, thighs, calves:
squats, leg press, machine calf raise
*Day 3, rest
Day 4, shoulders, traps, tris:
seated db press, lateral db raises, bentover db laterals, db shrugs or
cleans, tri pushdowns, overhead db extension (single db using both
hands)
Day 5, back, hamstrings:
deadlifts
pulldowns
bentover rows
leg curls
*Day 6, rest
Most exercises are 3-5 sets of 6-12 reps. I like to pyramid on the
compound exercises, but please don't ask about weight used. I'm a weak
son of a b!tch. SOMEONE has to make those Hercules guys look strong,
right?
I do abs just about every workout. My favorite is the knee-raise while
supported on the dip bars. And cardio at least four days a week. The
treadmill is my friend as I continue the battle against the blood
pressure.

I haven't had hair to my shoulders since fifth grade. And that was...
(counts on fingers and toes) 1972. Ouch.
> I use a Braun electric; otherwise, I would go

I'm not a daily head shaver. When I was dating my last girlfriend it
was about two or three days a week. She loved the shaved head! Now I'm
every two weeks or so. And I can use blades multiple times as what
hasn't been removed by male pattern baldness is quickly diminishing and
so the blade has an increasingly lower work requirement, seemingly,
each time called to duty. ;-)
Braun? They're supposed to be fantastic. I have an Oster adjustable
hair clipper that I purchased nearly ten years ago and have never
replaced anything on it. I zap my scalp to zero and then run a blade
over it.
Sometimes I'll use my Norelco 3805XL (yeah, I looked) electric razor
and let it go at that, but - typically - I'll shave first with the
Oster (or the Norelco depending on length) and follow-up with the a
blade - Trac II, Mach3, or Schick's Quattro. I really don't notice much
difference between all those.
And I really do have a forum called iam.bald over on
http://iam.bmezine.com/ which is a closed or pay-per community, but
hella fun. My /good friend/ mica may have some feedback on IAM, but I'm
not sure she's ever been a member. She does frequent the newsgroup
rec.arts.bodyart and there is some cross-over between that ng and IAM.

Nicely attributed, dumbass. No email, no first/last name combo, /no
nuthin' cuz *you're* weak. I'm offering this reply as a /virtual spot/
for you, Moonbat. Seems you need as much help as you can muster.

Still, I'm not embarrassed to admit I'm not strong. With my long arms
and slim build, I don't see myself ever benching 315 - that much-admire
3-plates-on-each-side Olympic bar nirvana for many a lifter.

But who will EVER make you look smart, Gohde? You seem to be weak, too.
I'm not sure that progressive resistance training can help a person's
IQ. Best of luck.

Speaking of IQ, for the benefit of the mentally challenged on MFW:
I'm a weak son of a b!tch = I don't know what I am doing :(
We of course, already know this, but it is about time that you figured
it out before you pollute the minds of our youth. Our country always
need some young boys to die for our country because us older guys
already were subjected to the draft. It is time for the next
generation, to die for nothing for our country and George Bush.
Just thought that Bright-Boy, might want to know.
