Below is a post I made on Lyle's forum www.bodyrecomposition.com . Despite
what some of you may think of him personally, he is a real bright guy with
excellent advice on diet and exercise. His forum is easy to navigate (even
though some mfw regulars can't seem to manage it) and, as a membership only
forum, leaves the trolls out. And all of Jims inane music posts go into the
music forum and can be avoided. While not NEARLY as much fun as MFW, it IS
extremely useful.

BTW, PSMF stands for protein sparing modified fast. It is the absolutely
easiest, fastest, way to lose a lot of fat. Not a maintenence diet, but I
HIGHLY recommend it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One month on PSMF. Went from the 250's at about 30% BF to the 220's at about
20% BF. (Don't fret the math. Variations in water/glycogen and my rather
casual caliper technique. But they're close enough.) Probably continue until
the 200's and about 10% BF. I have no interest in trying to maintain single
digit body fat.

Diet's been a snap. High protein and ketosis just kill my appetite. Have to
struggle to get all the protein in. But no matter how much veges and fiber
supplements and stool softener I use, I STILL have to do a once a week
laxative dose, and the hard stools are making my hemorrhoid bleed! I know
you've been accused of BEING a bloody asshole, but, in this case, you've
GIVEN me a bloody asshole. Not in a prison way, luckily.

Only exercise has been a little weight lifting and mostly cardio...walking
the dog on work days, and mountain hiking with the dog on weekends. Which is
more than you might think, since I have four day weekends every week.

<insert mental image of Charles turning lime green with envy>

Only used one "cheat day" when my daughter and I drove up to the Best
Friends Animal Sanctuary in Southern Utah. Haven't felt the need for more ,
yet.

BTW, Best Friends, at 33,000 acres and 1400-1800 animals at any given time,
is the country's largest no-kill animal sanctuary, and ALL you animal lovers
should go to www.bestfriends.org and send them money. And maybe adopt
something. Everybody gets to live out their life there in comfort. They even
have one building just for cats with feline leukemia, who can't be adopted
and would be killed anywhere else. It's an amazing place.

And all you cheap bastards who use this free forum to avoid buying books:
BUY SOME OF LYLE'S BOOKS, FOR CHRISSAKES! I have three, and I'm a dirty,
filthy, cheap, atheist Jew.

So, despite you being a Towel Headed Camel Jockey waiting for orders from
Osama to strap on a bomb and blow up an Olympic skating rink, you're OK.

Nice body recomposition!

Apparently we not only have the same guru, but we have the same opinion

So, isn't PSMF basically the first stage of the Atkins diet?
(P.S. don;t even *think* about joining Lyle's forum - if you ever do, you

Navigation is OK. Skipping crap from dummies who rarely ask
intelligent questions or give informed answers, but rather, just drop
one-liners, is more difficult than with a threaded newsreader. It
annoys me to have to scroll down a long page just to pick up a couple
of posts worth reading.

IIRC, the PSMF is very similar to the Stillman Diet of the 70s. I
lost a similar amount during my senior year in high school. If the
PSMF is essentially the same, it should, indeed, be effective, but it
is not very revolutionary.

I have no problem with that, but you need to realize that there are
still a few of us in MFW who actually read the research instead of
buying the books. It might be just Dmitri and me, but that's a few.

True, but having the topics grouped into individual forums eliminates much
of the clutter. I just read the new posts on the subjects I'm interested in.

It isn't the same, in many important aspects. I won't discuss the details
here, as that would be unfair to Lyle, whose forum IS free, and whose books
are for sale.

True, but for every two of you, there are dozens/hundreds/thousands like me

Lyle's is, frankly, a "modified" protein sparing modified fast. He is clear
in acknowledgeing the existence of PSMFs in the literature for decades, but
has, I believe, made some significant modifications which make the diet more
effective and, more importantly, safe. The original PSMFs managed to kill
some people.

It is. What was overwhelming was the size. I had remembered that they owned
3000 acres. I forgot that they lease an additional 30,000 acres from the
Government. Dogs, cats, horses, goats, sheep, pigs, birds, exotics from time
to time. Two full time vets, hundreds of paid staff, thousands of
volunteers. Really amazing place.

From what I could glean in the forum, it was similar to the Stillman
Diet (ketogenic, limited calorie, high water intake) with the addition
of some high-fiber vegetables to maintain digestive flow and reduce
LDL cholesterol, which I have been preaching to ketogenic dieters for
years. Is there some aspect I am missing?

That's because it was sold as a formula with lousy protein and no

Not by much. Remember, I'm talking Stillman, not Atkins induction
phase. Stillman permitted only poultry, eggs, lean meat, and low-fat
cheese (mostly dry curd cottage cheese).

You might want to really try to increase your veggies per meal.
Are you using fresh or canned?

If nothing else, just try increasing your daily magnesium intake in a
cal/mag/phos supplement. It works for me and I'm not always good about
veggie intake. I'm never constipated. ;-)

That's why you use the down chevron net to the thread title. it takes
you to the first new post in that thread.

Yep. You can go to the first post or the last post. If there are
numerous responses, you have to scroll through several long pages to
see if there's anything worthwhile in between. With a threaded
newsreader on Usenet, I can get an overview of the whole thread with
the names of all the authors and determine the likelihood that anyone
worth reading has posted something.

Also, there is no sub-threading in that forum. Someone may respond to
a post a page or two back, and there's no way to jump back to the post
that is the source of the response. It's mostly guesswork,
particularly if the earlier post is poorly quoted or not quoted at all.

OK, which part of "no matter how much veges and fiber supplements and stool
softener I use" was confusing? Are you related to that lab supervisor who

Fresh. If I have to eat all this stuff herbivore fodder, it's gonna' at
least be fresh.

Oh, I do. Once a week, I GREATLY increase my magnesium intake. Magnesium
hydroxide 3200 mg, along with ducosate sodium 100 mg and bisacodyl 10 mg. A
few hours later, AAAAHHHHH...

Interesting practical joke.

Like the ICU nurses that sent the lab a urine container of lemonade one
night for a urinalysis. The night tech. was annoyed because he was busy

Is it leafy greens tho' or starchy veggies like carrots and spuds?

I'll bet if you eat a pile of steamed spinach every day you'd never have
a problem... It's also naturally high in mag.

Leafy greens are useless without dressing, and I can't have dressing. No
starches allowed. Fibrous veges only. I use cauliflower, broccoli, green
peppers, tomatoes, radishes, zucchini, jalepenos, celery, dill pickes.

Plenty of ideas for dressings without starches...

A nice spicy italian dressing can be made with either oil and vinegar or
oil and lemon juice with various herbal flavorings.

A packet of powdered ranch dressing mix can be added to a container of
sour cream for a creamy dressing. There are all kinds of ways around
that.

You need to learn the details of Lyle's modifed PSMF...NO OIL!

This is NOT a "low carb ketogenic diet".

But I am not going into the details here. Visit Lyle's forum or buy the
book.

That IS a good point. However, I find that extremely hot spicy foods, which
I love, make me want to eat more, especially carbs, which I can't do on this
diet. So, no habaneros.

Actually, Lyle's UD 2.0 may be more suited to that. The modified PSMF seems
more suited to rapid short-term fat loss for fat fucks, who then transition
to maintenance or another kind of diet.

Oh I've got UD2.0 too. I'm going to use the PSMF for 10-14days first
as a kick start to my lazy 40something ass and then switch to UD2.
After a refeed. Involving margaritas. And here in DFW we have some
killer maggies. Really help with the ol' constipation.

I'm starting out at 188 @ 16%+/- BF. In 2001 I ended up at 6-8% and
159lbs (from 193 and 18%+)...and hungry as hell and cranky. My own
approach (lotsa biking and lifting) ended up taking waay to long at
(total time) 13 months. I'm hoping that doing it with a bit more
information will speed this up.

Can you spritz it with oil? I've got a oil spray pump and I spritz a
plate of greens with toasted sesame oil. It's enough to make it
palatable. That and the honking pile of meat on top.

During that one "cheat day" in a month, I had a hard time getting myself to
eat all that stuff I hadn't been eating. I guess the PSMF was so successful,
I didn't really want to "cheat", so I kept reminding myself it good for the
metabolism.

Allowed? Sure. Going to? No.

You're not the only one who seemed to be confused about this, so, let me try
to be clear.

I have used information I found on Lyle's free forum, and in a book which he
wrote and sells, to benefit me. It has been valuable to me to find a safe,
cheap, effective, easy (for me) way to lose a lot of fat in a short time.
For me to discuss the details here...thus reducing potential membership in
his forum or reducing his book sales..would be unethical.

I think that has more to do with the fact that you know Lyle and have

probably create "ethical" reservations about taking advantage of his
entrepreneurial naivety.

As for the rest of us, he is just another Internet source providing
free information, which may or may not be of use to us. Add to that
the fact that the face he presents to those he hasn't met socially is
not a particularly endearing one, and it will be seen that respecting
his "copyright" may well be not a very high priority!!

My own observation of Lyle's 'works' are that they are all ideas and
information readily available from other sources, which Lyle has
cobbled together in his own inimitable style, and presented the
results as if it was 'original thought' and all his own work.

Of course that is not much different to what many other people do in
an attempt to commercialise and make a living, none more so than our
own much less talented Will Brink!

Of course all research and subsequent publication has by its very
nature got to be a form of repetitive plagiarism, as has all forms of
learning where we pick others' brains to form our own 'original' ideas
and philosophies!!

In my experience bullshit often baffles brains, and proof of that is
seen in its teeming profundity all day and every day at Usenet!! ;o)

My gut feeling says that Lyle is fixing you up with one of his lesbians in
appreciation

Donovan says right now he is far too busy as he has Ahmed and Dipwad on
his doorstep demanding a definition of 'athlete'.

To summarize, Lyle is an arrogant shit with zero original ideas and very few
people here really give a tinker's fart if he sells his books or not. (IMHO)

I can't speak for the program, but going to forums and "Skipping crap
from dummies who rarely ask intelligent questions or give informed
answers, but rather, just drop one-liners" is par for the course on any
of the forums on bb.com, getbig.com, etc, etc.

Unfortunately, google allows posting, so it's still September.
