You can get multicolored LED Christmas lights for not too much money.
They're convenient because you can daisy-chain oodles of them without
blowing one of those tiny fuses.

LED bubble lights will probably never happen, or if they do they'll
incorporate a heating element and be crazy expensive, sorta like this:

I gave some mental time to making a CFL lava lamp once, because my friend
said he liked the look of LLs but couldn't justify a "lamp" that didn't
provide significant illumination. I figure, there are 40W CFLs, so there
ought to be a way, with a custom base, to stick a lava globe on top of
one. Got the base partway done, but got stuck on some mechanics and
never finished it.
