I would most emphatically recommend the outstanding artistic and
emotionally very compelling performance* of the Johannes Passion
(St. John Passion)

as distributed* in the complete works of Bach, the 'Bach Edition'
on the Brilliant Classics label,

and that performance (as well as practically all other performances
on that complete 'Bach Edition' too) I can and therefore do recom-
mend in all its aspects:

Music is about the expression of emotion.**

In particular Catherine Bott singing

'Zerfliesse mein Herze' (Zerfließe mein Herze, mein Jesu
ist tot.)

would make anybody who is still capable of doing so, cry with joy of
a respect for love that would indeed resurrect the dead

(resurrect the soul - you are not a body, not a brain, but you
are a soul, a spirit, who most of the time has a body, but who
can, as is taught and celebrated every year at Easter, exist
without a body and still be recognized by others as to who he
is or was).**

The orchestra - no instrument excepted - is with the soloists at
every infinitesimal moment.

But also the chorales sung by the Choir of King's College, most of
all the
'Ruht wohl, ihr heiligen Gebeine'

and of course the opening chorale

'Herr, unser Herrscher'

are of a powerful elegance - that creates and should indeed create

a direct connection to Bach, who is

connecting the listener who has any feeling at all left in his soul,
to where Bach intended and intends with his music to connect you to,
that is:

To yourself as you really are, and as Bach has indeed connected
and is continuing forever to connect so very many musicians and
lovers of music.
