According to reports, a university in Pennsylvania wants students to be be
fit by the time they graduate.
Lincoln University, a historically black institution in Pennsylvania, now
requires overweight students to take a fitness class to receive their
degrees.
Students must either have a body mass index (BMI) of below 30 (a BMI of 30
or higher is considered obese) or complete a one-semester Fitness For
Life class.
Some 19% of 2006s freshman class had BMIs over 30, the school reports.
We know were in the midst of an obesity epidemic, said James L. DeBoy,
chairman of Lincolns department of health, physical education and
recreation. We have an obligation to address this head on, knowing full
well theres going to be some fallout.
He added, We as health educators are responsible for students total
well-being, not just academic and cognitive, but physical and social. If a
student is being wheeled out on a stretcher at age 35 or 40, they will
never be able to say, I wish someone had told me that this would happen.
This year alone, 16 percent of the schools seniors have to take the class
next spring.
The Associated Press reports that the school is catching some flack from
students and educational experts.
Whats the point of this? asked one freshman. Some students on campus
are just confused why a certain BMI has to be a requirement. Are there not
a sufficient amount of prerequisites to complete prior to graduating from
college?
Dr. Yvonne Hilton, a professor in the schools health, physical education
and recreation department, was also skeptical. I dont necessarily agree
with the BMI being a requirement, she told The Lincolnian. It is
understood that obesity in America is growing fast, but maybe there should
have been a different approach in informing the students about their health
and building their awareness.
What do you think?
What do I think? The BMI thing has got to go.
Maybe if we had more mandatory health in fitness classes in grades K
thru 12 like we did in years past, we wouldn’t have so many obese or
unfit college age kids.
I’m old enough to remember a time when in HS, gym was an everyday
requirement. Funny how back then we still had fat kids but they
weren’t the flabby misshapen, video game and cell phone addicted,
slobs they are today.

If they're too fat to graduate, maybe they're too fat to pay their tuition?

Fat scares is the new red scare. Paranoia abounds to the detriment of
the American people.

Seems like someone is just too cheap to spend decent money on
graduation gowns.

You really don't want to know what I think. If you want to know. Read

That its never going to fly.
For anyone that doesn't know, a ssbbw is generally considered to be
350lbs or better.
So just for the record, how much does she weigh in say ballpark
numbers?
All guesses are welcome.
W.
The school is making the students think about obesity. This is a good
idea and has the potential to make a difference in the students' lives.
Thirty years from now we may be able to measure the impact of the
program. It is much better than doing nothing.
More social engineering from the liberal elite educrats.
Would obese people be healthier and happier if they lost weight, and
got fit? Yes, probably.
Is that anyone else's business? Absolutely not.
Does their BMI have anything at all to do with their academic
achievement? No.
Should the university be involved with this? Not unless the student
is a scholarship athlete whose fitness is relevant.
If this is a tax supported state school I doubt they'll be allowed to
keep the policy in place. If it's a private school they'll change it,
because they'll lose enrollment when students refuse to attend a
school that meddles to this extent.
Unless it's a medical school, the students should be concentrating on
their studies. Does the school require students to present their
health insurance card to gain enrollment? If not, then the school
should not be dispensing medical advice. -Dave
Oh, and before someone gets smart...in college I was 5'11" and 135
pounds and very athletic. It is still my opinion that the university
needs to concentrate on being a university, rather than a medical
facility.
Now the idiots are forging a dead woman.
