Chemotherapy reduces cognitive function
Sun, 20 Dec 2009 15:14:03 GMT

Commonly used chemotherapy agents can disrupt the cognitive
function in cancer survivors through inhibiting the
regeneration of new brain cells.

Chemo brain, a debilitating condition reported in many
cancer survivors, is characterized by memory and
concentration problems, confusion, difficulty in multi-
tasking and slow thinking.

The condition may remain for weeks, months or years after
chemotherapy.

According to the study published in Cancer Investigation,
four commonly used chemotherapy drugs cross the blood-brain
barrier, disrupting the brain cell proliferation in the
animal model.

"It could be that all of the chemo drugs cross into the
brain after all, or that they act via peripheral mechanisms,
such as inflammation, that could open up the blood-brain
barrier," said lead researcher Robert Gross.

These agents are believed to destroy the ability of brain
cells to regenerate in the hippocampus, a brain region
responsible for memory formation and mood.

The condition could be partially reversed with the use of
the insulin-like growth factor IGF-1, the study finds.

A government, of Israel, by Israel, and, for: Israel.
But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light:
for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. The light shineth in darkness;
and the darkness comprehended it not. The light of the body is the eye:
if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness.
If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead,
and Christ shall give thee light. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
