We've decided to paint our house. Actually we already painted the
smaller room and bathroom. But the foyer and family room have pretty
high ceilings and we'd rather get someone to do it.
We asked around and one guy we are leaning toward hiring says that
Benjamin Moore is the best paint and he will use it. His job will also
include caulking up the paint cracks, etc, painting the ceiling flat
white and any color we pick for the walls.
Anything we should look out for/do before/while he does this?
Is Benjamin Moore the best? Any particular finish for the family room
and foyer -i .e. flat, eggshell, etc.?
Any hints/suggestions?
Thanks.

I guess everybody will weigh in with their favorite paint; happens

FWIW, I've used Benjamin Moore for a long time, and I guess I'm
satisfied; haven't run any comparison tests with other brands.

I have heard it's best to stay away from Behr, the Home Depot brand.
No personal experience.

I had good results with Behr, about 12 years ago. It was hard to
handle, but it's lasted well. More recent Behr may not be as good --
and it's d****d expensive for rather ordinary paint. A relative who
painted professionally always preferred Ameritone, but that's no
longer available. I like Frazee, especially in bright colors.

Ditto on the satisfaction with Benjamin Moore -- I tried a "house brand"
paint (can't remember which one, hardware store) a few years ago, and wasn't
happy with it at all. I hired a professional to do a high-wall room, and
he would only work with Benjamin Moore. So I used it when I did the other
rooms, and had to agree with him. It was worth the few extra $$. As far as
finish, they say flat is hard to clean up, but that hasn't been my
experience. I have used it throughout my home, and wash smudges off of it
with no problem at all. Eggshell, on the other hand, I found really
difficult to roll without leaving lines.

Behr was excellent paint before it was transformed into homedepot's flagship
paint. I have had good results with Sherwin-Williams paints.

I recently bought a house, and have been doing lots of paint - based on my
expereince:

Sears Paint - not good (its actually hit or miss, and supposedly made by
Sherwin Williams - I had good results with one gallon, very poor results
with the other gallon)

Behr - JUNK! Stay away - unless you want to paint twice (like I had to)

Benjamin Moore - EXCELLENT! The best! Nice, thick, little smell, great
quality.

***A great great color - I was so pleased with it was "Montgomery White"
(actually its not really white, it more of a really pleasant yellow - I
can't tell you how many compliments I have gotten on my living room which I
painted in this color).

My paint finish preference is Semi gloss on all walls. It remains
washable, and doesn't look like flat paints do to me...like chalk on
the wall. Good luck, a new paint job is a beautiful thing.

Maybe it is, and maybe it isn't. It hardly matters. The difference
between "best", 2nd best and 3rd best is miniscule and has more to do
with who is painting and how they do it. If your painter likes to use
that brand, go ahead, it is a fine paint. Would you really be upset
to discover that it was only the 2nd best paint in the world? How
much more per gallon would you pay to get the "best" (and never mind
'best' to who or by what criterion....).
