SAN ANTONIO -- An American flag painted on a garage door has residents
and a Northwest homeowner's association debating whether Old Glory is
a symbol of patriotism or a violation of a deed restriction.
Jan Villanueva and her husband, John, who is retired from the Texas
Air National Guard, painted the U.S. flag on the garage door in the
8800 block of Roquefort two weeks after the Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks.
But Guilbeau Park Homeowners Association officials said no one asked
for permission to paint the flag's image on the garage.

But the couple didn't get permission from the Guilbeau Park
Neighborhood Association to paint the U.S. flag on the garage. Now
neighborhood officials said the Villanuevas have until April 1 to
paint over the flag or face more action.
"Unless the last soldier comes home in April, we are not painting it,"
Johnny Villanueva said.
