(POSTED AT THE LOCAL FORUM)

People on this forum must be tired of hearing my NOISE --and I'm
saving you the best-- but I just wished to find the right venue for
it. The city's landscaping lady told me that they have some forum or
Internet place where you vent your existential question for them to
give it consideration. For example, "Why is there a trashcan always in
the middle of the sidewalk on Alton Road near Pine Tree?" "Why is
there a chain at the entrance to the South Pointe Park, without
marking of any kind, where I damaged my bike and almost broke a bone?"

One question I want to ask also is, "Why is there so much landscaping
where other safety issues are ignored?"

NOTE: We used the "bike facility" on Washington Ave and we are here to
tell the story. We rode TAKING THE LANE with casual disregard to
traffic. They are learning, they are really learning.

I must note that we must ride side by side or else this can happen to
you too: My girlfriend was somewhere behind me, but she had a flat
tire and was left a mile behind. You don't want to leave your
girlfriend behind, do you? (The same day, earlier, a driver threw at
her a business card saying he rode bike too. Funny, very funny. Who
says the jungle can't be fun?)

Communities, just liveable communities where one ride a bike or take a

Sometimes I get good feedback to local issues from exotic places like
the UK. To me it looks exotic...

> Pavement cyclists are scum. There never used to be pavement cyclists

> without the risk of buckling wheels. Now the selfish prats can ride
> around with impunity writing off pedestrians.
>
> A lot of motorists are scum too, they are in their own little space

> right of passage of that "space"

Just came back from a soft ride to the market on back streets, but
there's stretch of 3-4 blocks that gets hectic. I approached a car
sitting on the lane --you can sort of do that there-- and get ready
for the unexpected. In effect he pulls over as I approach and I'm
forced into the middle of the street, then he stops again some 20 feet
further, and the process is repeated where I must ride the dividing
lane and stay there for a block or so until I turn left.

This is pure SADISM... but I'm not the masochist type.

The difference with the UK, I think, is that they don't have the
cavemen driving. The similarity is that they don't have "living space"
for cyclists either.

They are halfway in the evolutionary process...

Yeah, the monkey loves evolution. ;)

I'm so sorry I can't sound like music to your ears.

Others appreciate it better.

That's true. And humorists will see all the humor contained in the
Bible.

The superficial Christian will never notice. (I'm thinking of Jonah
above)

My partner just called me saying a cyclist jumped in front of her AS
IF WANTING TO BE HIT... Everything is possible in the Money Jungle.

What is missing out there is PREDICTABILITY. When you hear about the
German traffic system, that's the first thing you hear. Cyclists
struggling to survive are not predictable. But my solution is to give
LIVING SPACE to every species --cars, bikes and pedestrians-- so
conflict is minimized. There's no vehicle better than other, and the
pedestrians at the bottom of the food chain. 5000 pedestrians have
been killed in the last 10 years in Florida, enough to make you think
before you step out of the cage. The bike is the only practical
alternative to the car, and I call the cyclist a "pedestrian on
wheels." It's simply too far and too hot to walk around. When drivers
act aggressively toward cyclists, they endanger the future and
perpetuate terror and wastefulness. Those cars sitting at
intersections ignoring cyclists and pedestrians are simply ignoring
the monkey.

Amen.

There's an aspect contributing to the TRAFFIC CRISIS --if I may call
it so-- which is illustrated by another important law in the jungle:
KILL OR BE KILLED. One driver is Mr Nice and gives you the right of
way, but the one behind is blasting the horn. This so prevalent that
few people dare to be nice!

There's a great Mexican movie that plays with the concept, and how you
must be part of the jungle to survive...

'Herod's Law--the title is apparently a Mexican idiom that boils down
to "fuck or be fucked"--displays a natty surface. Set in 1949, it
reminds one of both American screwball comedy and the last Golden Age
of Mexican cinema.'

Though this manual was originally intended for the Army, we may as
well use as a DRIVING MANUAL:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc4h0qcAIpE

The problem is we cyclists are not on a level field and must resort to
good luck. For the most part though it becomes NO MAN'S LAND, and few
cyclists dare beyond the winding, grinding sidewalks.

(I reply to myself. It happens all the time when you think)

Let me see, I'm going to the streets of NYC, Cairo and Beijing to
address community issues.

The solution is closer than ever.

I forgot. The reason why we must be spreading around the struggle for
survival is...

JUST BECAUSE WE ARE FACING 'GLOBALIZATION.'
