If violence isn't solving the problem, you're not using enough of it.

They have lots of exotic stuff that we wouldn't be likely to have used,
but what caught my attention was the Racal-Vadic acoustic modem for $519.00.

Most people would not have a clue how to use some of those items that
could be worth 10X the price. I did notice the two button mouse for
$19.95 though that is not worth $10.

This is a generic problem with ebay. There are too many, perhaps the
vast majority, of sellers who try and sell their used junk for more than
what you can by new. The computer section of Craigslist is similar if
not worse. Now whenever I need some electronic doodad I just go over to
my local brick and mortar Microcenter and buy it hassle free, and
probably cheaper too.

Children, your performance was miserable. Your parents will all
receive phone calls instructing them to love you less.

You could find out a typical price using Google Shopping, Overclockers
UK, Ebuyer or even Microcenter etc. and then buy it cheaper from ebay.

In case it's expensive on Ebay, Ebuyer and Overclockers are usually
cheaper than brick and mortar shops, though it's arguably less hassle free.

You're completely correct about some of the prices on eBay. A classic
case of let the buyer beware. A truly frugal shopper will research
retail prices before they ever go to eBay. On the other hand, if I
can convince a buyer that my used junk is worth a lot of money,
without misrepresenting what it really is or it's provenance, good for
me and too bad for them. Auction sites in general, and eBay
specifically, is no place for impulse shoppers. The other problem is
the attitude people bring to the table. When you successfully
purchase an item with a high bid you haven't "won" anything, you've
made purchase. It's a business transaction, not a game.

I've bought a lot of stuff on eBay. I've never paid more then half of
what I could have had the item for new, and have never been burned.
I'm careful, and use eBay only for my "wants" not my "needs". If I
"need" it, like you, I visit my local Microcenter, or similar brick
and mortar store.
