Is this telemarketing?

Phone rings. My answering machine picks up. About half way into my canned
amswering machine message the caller hangs up. Computer on other end senses
it is not a live person answering and hangs up?

What makes me ask is I've not had this problem before that I can recall. I
pick up sometimes but usually screen the call with the answering machine.
Why I ask is because I had two such calls yesterday - different callers
(answering machine recited calling phone number on the second call but not
the first, which probably had it blocked.

New telemarketing technique or just new to me? I get VERY few telephone
calls - sometimes not for weeks.

Do you have caller id on your phone? That should give you
the number and you can look it up on the internet to see
where the caller is originating from and who or what
business is calling. And yes, those pc generated calls
can detect if a human has answered or whether it is
an answering machine.

We've discussed it before but I have ProCaller Block as
my local AT&T office does NOT offer NoMoRobo service. My
phone was ringing 5, 6, 7 times a day with junk calls.
Someone will come along and tell me I should have just
let my answering machine pick up. But I didn't want to
hear my phone ringing that many times per day. Once I
have blocked a number and they're dumb enough to call
again my phone will ring only once. It doesn't take
but 4 or 5 times and they no longer call.
