Come on people, time is running out, let's make the most of this place before Google shuts it down.

It will still exist after Google News shuts down. Just use a real News
Server to get/post content.

This group has existed for many years.

Why is Google needed for this? It isn't.

I recognize your name (Beaver Fever) from the past, likely before Google
News existed. Hello.

Hello. This nym has existed for 10 years or so, there are others going back to the 1990's but I can't remember them.

It doesn't matter, this group is dead regardless of what is used to access it and by most it was Google Groups.

Still a bittersweet moment. The internet opened a whole world for me and this group might have been my first time actually interacting with real adults and the perspectives of people outside my circle. And without this group specifically I don't think I would be the man I am today, especially without the frugal living perspectives which allowed me to survive better in the wild with limited financial resources.

I understand. I've been on the internet and USENET since its inception.
Funds are short here too. I never joined the "social media" crowd or the
many web sites over the years. The lack of activity is saddening. But
lookig elsewhere, I don't see anything more than shallow thinkers.

It has been great knowing you over the years.

I've used a few nyms myself. The email address is good.

Google was a parasite, not a creator.

It wasn't even helpful, and it allowed more loons free access.

Some of us check in regularly. I wonder which was the bigger
usenet-killer, facebook or google groups. I think it has something to do
with declining literacy due to inadequate education in the US. People
aren't interested in conversation any more -- just pronouncements.

Hi Bev,

I never liked the terms of service for social media and thus you'll just
find me on email and USENET.

What, you actually read them? I figure the condensed version is "We can
do whatever we want and you can't stop us." No point in worrying about
it. I use facebook because the people I "knew" from usenet migrated
there. I've made it as much like usenet as possible and very unlike
what I assume most people use it for. The bad thing about it is that
you can't carry on discussions and useful functions suddenly disappear.

We take what we can get.

Same here.

Compared to the constant ads, tracking, and moderating
on the commercial [anti]social networks, it's much more
peaceful and often thought-provoking here on Usenet.

I find myself spending less and less time online over
the past few years with Usenet taking up most of my
time.

Since there's less on Usenet, I spend less time online
overall. Email takes up a pittance of time since
my email provider has good spam filters. I rarely see
more than one spam email per week.

I'll add one more rant:
Companies that *only* have social media methods of contact.
"Contact us on Facebook or Twitter/X" simply doesn't cut it.
No email address, no phone number, or even no snail mail
address equals me not being your customer.

I am on Reddit a lot and a lot of good exchange of information and interaction but also too fleeting and overloaded to build any actual communities.

It's not just Usenet but a lot of music fan forums and lifelong friends were made and a lot of that dried up when it just flipped over to social media.

I do enjoy it though. I remember reading how a lot of people feel inferior in comparison to their friend's profiles. I decided to be the one to make people feel that way. My feed is pretty much just this concert or that concert and downtime filled with remembrances of past events or upcoming with the occasional meme or cat photo, etc.

I mostly agree with you and I hate the fact that so many family members and friends can only be reached thru Facebook. However I have gotten laid on Facebook and if that's a good enough reason to destroy lives and even civilizations, I can fork a little privacy over to Pimp Supreme Marky Z
