I have a ~30 Obihai VOIP box that I use with Google voice to get free
phone service. I hooked up a cordless phone, and can't tell the
difference between this and a landline.

Trouble is, I've read that as of about 130 days from now, Google
Voice will no longer work with these little boxes, so I'm looking for an
alternative.

Everything else I've seen charges a cent per minute or more. That
doesn't sound like much, but it is a lot more than free. I was hoping
to find something that charged about a tenth of a cent per minute.

Anyone else on here use Google Voice with a voip box like the Obihai?
Have you found any cheap alternatives to Google Voice?

Ooma uses its own VOIP system. The device is $100-$140 and service is
$5-$15 month.

You can get outgoing service for 0.5¢/minute with Localphone. It's the
most like Google Voice. No E911 service.

This whole situation is being discussed on the Obihai forums

to see them.

If you're on a dialup internet connection, you really do need
a landline.

Nyssa, who is still on dialup

Not only do you need the phone line for internet access, but even if you
did use the internet for phone calls, the speed of the dialup is likely a
problem.

I had dialup till October of 2012, which mean 16 years of dial up
internet.

I've been on the internet for over 25 years now, and have
never had anything but dialup for my home access. At least
I'm getting around 42.6K for a connection speed now rather
than the 1200 that was standard back then. Of course, web
bloat has taken over from text-only, so the increase in
speed doesn't help but so much.

I agree with Derald about needing a landline for power
outages. When your electric can go out for as much as a week
or two or more, the copper landline still works where the
cell phones loose power and local cell towers are blitzed.

Between dialup and power outages, I'm keeping my landline
phone, period.

It's the cell phone that I don't have and don't need.

local POP phone number

It's much more cost efficient to have a minimal cell phone plan and a
free VOIP "landline" if you're willing to give up a copper landline.

In reality, VOIP on DSL or cable requires only a battery backup on the
ATA in order to be nearly as reliable as a copper landline.

I would not depend on a landline over Uverse since their fiber to copper
boxes don't have generators.

You can both use cell data instead.

Leaves dialup for dead.

If you are looking for a google voice "free replacement" after 5/15/2014, I'm sorry to say there really isn't an alternative.. at least not yet. There are very cheap alternatives to the likes of vonage, or your local cable company. I was looking for the cheapest and easiest to set up as well as an unlimited plan. After a lot of research, the provider I went with is http://www.vestalink.com/#_l_6e (please use this referral as a kind thank you).. I signed up for 12 months unlimited local and long distance (within US) for only $49.99 (that's a little over $4 a month). It includes E911, a free local number at no extra charge and a slew of other standard features like vmail, call forwarding, blocking, rollover, caller ID, spoofing etc. International rates are also super cheap. Setting up my OBI was a snap - literally just one-click to set up via vestalink website. I have been very happy with the clarity so far and I will report back any issues if I run into them. Thanks.

I hope you found this by now, but for everyone's sake...

Google Voice didn't go poof, nor did their agreement with ObiHai...

The deal was that the Obi 100 series boxes were unsupported as of that date over 5 years ago.

The Obi 300 series DOES work with Google Voice with no interruptions (though there was a firmware, etc update needed when the change occurred).

I have an Obi 302 (2 line/phone out box) working right now right next to my screen, in fact.

The Obi 300 & several other devices/phones aimed at the business customer also work fine with Google Voice these days.

Personally, I hate it when a manf. either cannot or does not allow their devices to continue working, including Apple, which you can't get anything for these days on older devices, and it looks like even the iPhone 5 is heading for Bricksville, as they apparently won't have IOS updates for it beyond ver. 12.x, with the newest devices on ver. 13.x now!

very true, i also despise this BS, and when my obi100 went out i was pissed. but looking back i thoink it was a good thing-no a great thing, almost as good as my 10yrs free phone service, but it was the kick in the pant i needed to get a phone that wasnt spyed on 24-7, who voicemails+texts, are recorded and stored forever, from a company that has proven itself over and over to be evil above all others.

You can continue using GOOGLE VOICE as your landline and without an Obihai or Polycom box and it's even simpler than these complicated voip systems.

Check my info our on my facebook link below. You will need your google voice account, any unused and unsubscribed google app compatiable cell phone (yesterdays cell phone will do) ad the module cell2Jack. It works wonderfully and I've got 11 vtech phones all throughout my house live with Google Voice.
