Has it occurred to you that perhaps there's a reason for their lower
(note: I did not say "low") prices? I'd hate to hear what you have to
say about WalMart.

Ah. How clever of you to have figured out that Big 5 isn't the only
sporting goods store in town.

You've shopped at TWO of them? My, you are a glutton for punishment...

Some more consumer reviews about Big 5 Sporting goods:

Customer Service is atrocious. But, sale prices and
selection are good enough to keep me interested.
I like Sports Chalet better.

I am so happy that I finally found out what Big 5 stands for
and where they got their name. Now that I know it makes more
sense and I hope it helps explain things to you, too. Here
is what I found out:

Big 5 stands for the 5 reasons we are a lousy sporting goods
store:

1. Our prices are ridiculous. If you pay full price for
anything at Big 5 then you are a total sucker! Everything in
our store is on sale for 30% to 70% off at one time or
another. EVERYTHING. Nothing was brought in that we did not
or will not have on one of our ads. Do not pay regular price
at this mark down house! Do not!!

2. Our employees are awful. I don't know how so many
unqualified people can work in one place. And, you, the lady
with the dark hair. The one with the "pardon me" and "excuse
me, sir" and "just a moment please, sir" all spoken with that
voice and tone of a patronizing mother / method actress. You
are the worst offender of them all! You know who you are and
anyone who has been there in the last few months knows this
lady.

3. We tell people we sell hunting and fishing licenses, but
we never have them. You see, we get three fishing licenses,
four hunting licenses, two second rod stamps, one Delta Bay
enhancement stamp, one California duck stamp and zero of the
Federal duck stamps. We sell this tiny selection of tags /
licenses in minutes. Here is the catch, we tell you to come
back tomorrow because we expect to get some more. You keep
coming back and we never have them! Brilliant!

4. Our "selection" of fishing gear is second to none. But
at Big 5 that means, if you look for a second you realize we
have none. Well, at least nothing that would you want to
use.

5. Number 5 represents the shortest amount of time, in
minutes, that you spend in our checkout line or shoe
department or gun department. 5 represents the number of
employees out of 6 who are in the store at any given time who
do not "work in this department", who do not "know how to
work the register", who do not "have the key for the case",
who are "on break" or who are not going to be able actually
assist you in any way.

I am sorry Big 5 that this sounds so harsh. I will admit
that I have purchased firearms at your store on several
occasions. When you do have the "sales" the prices are good.
But, it was these trips to your store that I discovered how
lousy you are. 45 minutes to wait for a "manager" to
complete some forms while you wait is enought time to explore
the store and see what is going on. It is not pretty.

the worst experience ever!!! this mid 20s girl with long old
school out dated hair (I'm a hairstylist) helped me she was
the RUDEST B!Tch!! since i dont look white I'm guessing that
she was racist.. she even wanted to see id for a fishing
license even tho the day before I went and didn't need any
form of id.. but she was super rude i also brought my mom
back to sick her on the chick .. and trust me that would have
been a BAD idea!! i wish i would of got her name so i could
put her on blast.. but then again who is rockin some old
school as permed hair!! you wont miss her"

Sport Chalet USED to be a really good store. Now they're only a little
better than the chains like Chick's and/or Dick's. Lots of clothing and
shoes, but not a single Goode pole tip to be had. Still, their
employees are much more knowledgeable than the chain-people.

At the original SC store the old ski guy mounted new bindings on my skis
for free because he wanted my old ones for his antique collection,
proudly displayed on the wall. Long gone. The store is now part of its
own mini-mall and looks just like all the others.

Amazingly, we found a very knowledgeable employee at Sports Authority
across from Big 5 in Sunnyvale, CA. At Big 5 we didn't find any employee
to help us with snowboards, which is probably just as well since their
stuff is very low end.

Come on, it's a snowboard! How much help do you need? Or new
technology, for that matter?
