Has anyone succeeded in getting their *free* SIM or hotspot transferred
to Ting? Ting seems to have ONLY paid accounts, unlike the totally-free
time that Freedompop offered. I've emailed Ting several times and
received a couple of useless replies, but no actual resolution.

Can't help you with that, but if you're looking for a low cost carrier,
I suggest taking a look at Mint Mobile. They are a T-Mobile MVNO, so it
depends on coverage where you are. They have unlimited voice/text and
3GB of data for $15 a month if you pay for a year at a time. If you
pay for 3 months at a time, it's $23. A year with 13GB of data per month
is $25 a month. After you exceed the data, it just slows. I've had it
for a year and a half, very happy. Have a friend here who's using it and
happy too and he got his parents in LA on it and they are happy too.
If you're interested, give me a heads
up here, they have a referral deal going on where we can both get some $$,
$30 I think. I think they still have a $5 trial deal too, where they
send you a sim with 100 minutes on it, 100MB of data to try it out too.

Useful information for those who use more than 10 calls and a few
hundred MB/year! What I'd like is a wifi hotspot with a certain amount
of data I could use until it's gone, but I don't think anybody offers
that.

Still waiting for Ting's response...

Hi Bev, this is Miguel from FreedomPop. I'm sorry to hear you haven't found what you're looking for with Ting! Keep in mind, only CDMA (Sprint) accounts were transferred to Ting. So if you have a GSM SIM or hotspot, then your account has remained as is on FreedomPop with no action required on your end.

If you're unsure, reach a representative at forums.freedompop.com or on twitter @freedompophelp. If you're a VIP subscriber, you can also reach us through freedompop.com/contact.

Then why has my Franklin R850 hotspot stopped working? Why does there
seem to be no record of the free voice/msg/data SIM associated with a
different email account?

So you're saying that the FREE freedompop accounts are continuing with
freedompop and should continue to work?

If you want my opinion, admitting that I know little about freedompop except
that they look like crooks, you are basically fucked with your FREE services
with them.

There are no free services with Ting, if you want to pay them, you can
continue to use your devices. Otherwise, no pay, no play.

Freedompop obviously doesn't want you freeloaders anymore.

I'm pretty sure if you start paying them for service, you can stay.

It looks like people with the CDMA devices are moved to Ting, the GSM people
are moved to something called Red Pocket.

Although it seems they still offer the "free" service as a plan, only thing
I can think of is that it's device dependent.

I know that somewhere in the near future it's going to be LTE and Voice Over
LTE only. Verizon is going VoLTE only by the end of this year and I think
Sprint is shooting for the end of 2020.

I tried. Not easy (or perhaps not possible?) to make an original post.
I replied to one, hit POST, and it apparently disappeared.

I don't twitter. If this is essential I'll give it a shot, but I'd
really rather not.

Nope, just one of the unwashed. I'm really unhappy about this, on the
verge of feeling cheated. Freedompop offered a free service, I paid
what was asked. Now my $20 item is useless.

Moreover, I am unable to find any record at all of the $5 voice/msg/data
SIM (small amount per month forever) I bought for a tablet before I
bought the hotspot. NOT happy.

Not crooks, but you do have to jump through hoops to make sure you're
not spending more than you thought you were.

Useless. I use only a few minutes/few MB per YEAR.

I saw no reference to the Franklin R850 hotspot at the freedompop site.
I've tried to post TWICE in their 'forums', with no apparent success.

I bought the device from them. It ought to continue to work. Period.

T-Mobile prepaid for $10/year. A perfect plan for the VERY occasional
user.

Yeah but if freedompop doesn't exist anymore, your opinion is null and void.

Red Pocket, back in june, said they would try to come up with a "free"
service but I'm guessing it isn't going to happen soon. They are a MVNO
where you can pick the carrier (AT&T, TMobile, Verizon, Sprint) and I'm
thinking providing a free service that works across the big4 is going to be
a major headache.

But since you seem to be handed over to Ting, there is this:

Update 6/7/2019

Ting disclosed in a tweet that it also acquired a part of FreedomPop.

On the contrary, we picked up a selection of FreedomPop CDMA customers:
https://t.co/ZOczdbJD2m

We're excited! Details are forthcoming about a special FP CDMA rate plan
which will be communicated to FP CDMA customers soon. We will not be
adopting the Freemium model.

So no free lunch for you.

My point is, you were aquired by a new company and whatever obligations and
benefits you had with the old company just doesn't carry over.

If a company buys another company, it buys the liabilities as well as
the assets. I am such a liability. If a company goes bankrupt then all
bets are off.

OTOH, I might have to sue to obtain relief. Yeah, right.

The relevant question would be what does any agreement you signed say?
Companies change their offerings all the time and frequently what was
free is no longer free.

T-Mobile no longer offers the $10/year minimum prepaid account, although
existing ones were grandfathered in. I live in fear...

Nobody seems to offer a chunk of voice/data which is good until used up,
at which time you buy another chunk.

> Somehow, my comment disappeared the first try.

To the best of my knowledge there was no contract. Probably a TOS. I
know it's probably dead in the water, but I had hopes. It was really
useful for people who only needed to use it once a year :-(

Let's see... We used it to find cheap gas stations between Pasadena and
Houston 3 years ago. I used to find the ACTUAL address of a business
whose street had an ambiguous name maybe a year ago. Uh... I don't
think we were much of a drain on their resources, but we were certainly
unlikely to upgrade our account.
