I dumped AVG with their bloated 56MB download package that was always
corrupt anyway. I switched to Avast, which is 28MB, and has worked
flawlessly. Plus, AVG does not have many of the features of Avast. AVG
is trying to drive people to their pay version by dropping value and
may be losing their fan base. I never got a virus with AVG, but if
you can't execute update, it is useless to me.

Hmm - someone posting from Africa is offering virus software? Is that
to rid or load the viruses?

Naw. It's just a coincidence that the post is about AVG. These
scammers look for ways to relate a post to the group in any lame way
so they can project the url of their blog site. AVG itself is
reputable. They simply have become user unfriendly in my book and
better free software is available. But again, the op is not concerned
in any way about helping anybody.

I recently switched from AVG to Avast on a friend's computer for similar
reasons.

You could try Ubuntu too, which I believe is a better operating system
to Windows, especially if you're largely concerned with viruses. You
have to spend a little bit of time learning how to do things "the Ubuntu
way" initially for some things. Most things, however, are pretty similar
to Windows.

Thanks. I'm about to try some alternative OS's just for kicks. I have
no virus problems myself. I feel well inoculated at this point.
Literally with a flip of a switch, I have a virus free cloned disk
ready to sign on with. Sometimes I operate on a virus in my clean
room. I hope nothing every escapes the lab.

FWIW, Ubuntu people seem to have a lot of trouble installing google earth. I
don't read the posts (I'm a slackware user), but there seem to be a lot of them.
