Your boombox already has an amplifier, no need for powered speakers.

Check out thrift stores. I got a pair of *really* nice Infinity
bookshelf speakers for $10 a few years ago. Or better yet, look at
the curb. People throw out decent working speakers all the time.

Or Craigslist or Ebay. You can probably also find a whole stereo with speakers
that's better than the boom box for less that $97. Better speakers will
very likely sound better, but if it's a cheap boom box, only so much you
can do regardless of how great the speakers are.
