Do prices for rental cars go up or down if you wait longer (i.e. closer to the date you are actually renting)?

I need a rental car from Jan 15-22. Should I book it now, or will
prices go up/down if I wait until closer to the time? I know plane
tickets are cheaper if you buy them further in advance. I suppose if I
wait until the last minute, I might be able to get a cheap deal by
making an offer on Priceline.com. Right?
thanks in advance,
John

Or there might be no cars available.

Or even more likely there will be no cheap cars available.

Most rental agencies seem to run out of their standard models during
their peak rental periods, and unless you have a reservation for a
"cheap" car, you won't get a bump up without a corresponding price
increase.

Why not try to reserve through priceline now?

Considering there is no advance payment required and you can cancel /
rebook at any time, why not lock in a current price & watch for a better
price?
