ATT just keeps raising my landline cost to the point where I am now
paying $35 just for the landline itself, and all I use it for are
local calls and to access my cheap long distance via onesuite.com. Oh,
and as I understand it I have to have GTC Telecom as my ld carrier, so
that's another $4 or so per month.

So.. I want to get rid of my landline if for no other reason than to
say FU to ATT for charging so much for it.

So what I need is a cell phone service that :
Is reliable
Has unlimited "free" minutes for long distance
Costs less than $40/month

I don't need internet or texting etc. in fact I'd like to use it with
a very cheap cell phone; I just need good reception and reliability
not the internet, texting, etc. ; though if it has texting I might
eventually use it...

Any suggestions?

I do use pagepluscellular on one old cell phone I use for emergencies
and I use Tracfone for the other but both are too expensive for "daily
home use" because my wife sometimes like to talk on the phone for
hours to her sister in Pennsylvania.

Page Plus is about as cheap as you are going to get for a cell.

Do you have a decent internet connection? Consider getting
a VoIP phone service. Magic Jack is pretty cheap at $20.00
per year. Vonage is not as cheap as they would like you to think.
Phone Power is half the price of Vonage and has better service
and features. I've been with Phone Power for almost a year and
have no complaints.

T-Mobile has a $40 plan that include 500 minutes a month. If you can
get your wife to call on weekends, the minutes are free.

Also consider what her sister is using for a phone. I added my Mom to
my plan for an additional $10/mo and we can talk anytime, as mobile to
mobile calls within the family are always free.

As to MagicJack, I have one but I use it for my home business as those
calls are usually quick and local.
I have found the long distance calls on MagicJack are of generally
poor quality, much poorer than onesuite.com. As to page plus cellular,
it's cheap but I don't believe it is that cheap for long distance,
right? Also, the MagicJack is hooked to my computer and we need the
ability to take the phone into the other room when my wife is talking
for hours...

$40/month would not be bad but 500/month is not enough minutes even if
she gets free min. on weekends. She can spend 120-180 minutes on any
one day talking long distance, so I pretty much need unlimited
minutes. I'll have to see what plan her sister and niece are using...

Thanks to all for the info/recommendations.

I've never tried OneSuite.com so I can't comment. But I'll check
it out.

As for Magic Jack, I only mention it because it's the cheapest option
available. I have not used it. Phone Power was my best recomendation
for Voip service. Huge boatload of features, two line ATA allows two
calls at once. Works with a standard phone.

Nationwide calling. It's about 6 cents per minute, non roaming.
There are also a pair of flat rate plans. $44.00 for unlimited,
29.99 for 1200 minutes. If you go over you drop back to the per
minute rate.

> right? Also, the MagicJack is hooked to my computer and we need the

Cordless phone.
I have my ATA sitting next to my router (it plugs directly into my
network). A cordless phone base station hooks to it. Several handsets
are scattered around the house. The second line of the ATA plugs
into the house phone wireing. That lets me use the wired phone
in my bedroom, and a two line phone in my office.

Here are a few more:
Set up here niece and sister on Phone Power too. In system calls
are free. But the setup cost can be steep for three parties.

Skype. I think Skype to Skype calls are free. Look around, I
recall seing wireless Skype compatible handsets somewhere.
These work like cordless phones for Skype. They connect via
wi-fi and your wireless router to your network to make your call.
Since it's wireless, it can be taken into the next room.

The main thing is that I want a phone for long distance that my wife
can use in the bedroom, that is not connected to the computer (I
already have Magic Jack connected to the computer for my business and
I don't think I can have a 2nd one, right?). And some of them don't
work well if I am USING the computer while she is using the phone,
right?

So really I think what I need is a cell phone that gives free or at
least, say, 1200 min. a month. I think 1200 min. a month would cover
her.

The thing with Page Plus Cellular (which I have on my "emergency" cell
phone that I keep in my car and only use when I really need a phone in
the car (seldom), is that you have to pay for the minutes even when
someone *calls you*, no? So that would not work for her even though
her sister has free minutes and can call her, right?

Jeez, this phone thing is very complicated! All I know is I don't
think I should have to pay ATT $35-40/month just for the ability to
receive local calls and make long distance calls via onesuite.

By the way, onesuite is great at 2.5cents a minute for ld from a land
line. But even that adds up when we call other states frequently...

After reviewing some of the suggestions here I realize that while
Phone Power seems to be a good deal, I already have Magic Jack and
don't want to spend $79.95 to set up what is essentially a Magic Jack
with 2 lines instead of one.

So really what I have decided I need is a cheap cell phone service
with at least 1000 min. a month "free" long distance.

So please keep recommendations limited to cell phone service. I use
PagePlusCellular for my "emergency" cell phone that I keep in the car
for those rare times when I really need it, but it's really not that
cheap for long distance calls of the type my wife likes to make - of
an hour or two at a time. So what I guess we need is a cell phone
"plan" that includes a lot of free long distance, to replace our land
line; OR a cheaper land line than ATT which is charging us :
$29.70 a month for basic service (which includes $8.50 month (!!?) for
call waiting!
Then they have WHOLE BUNCH of fees and taxes and surcharges which
bring it up to:
$41.60/month!

And that does not include any long distance or local call charges at
all, this is just Basic Service!

I resent the idea of giving ATT all this money for one BASIC land line
service, and I must find an alternative asap! But like I said, I
really don't want a computer based service like Phone Power or Magic
Jack (which I already have for a 2nd line).

Not sure if you can use this, but it is worth mentioning. ATT used to
offer a "message base" (land line) package that gave all free incoming
calls and limit outgoing calls to 30 a month.

One more comment about Phone Power; then I'll shut up. The Phone Power
ATA (Analoge telephone adaptor) does not require the use of your
computer.
Your computer does not have to be on for it to work (unlike Magic Jack).
It plugs into your network and only requires that your router be
turned on.
I just wanted to clearify that.
So, moving right along...

I don't think you are going to get that. Most free mins are
going to be nites and weekends. the free nite minutes generally
start at 9:00pm. Except maybe Sprint. I think their free nite
minutes start at 7:00 or 8:00.
The Page Plus Talk and Text 1200 plan at $29.95 per month for 1200 mins
is pretty hard to beat. Although it doesn't have any free mins.
The price per min is the same for local or long distance.
If you are looking for free mins, then you are going to have spend
some time on the major carrier's web sites comparing plans.

I hear ya. I resented paying Verizon $48.00 per month for a landline.
That's why I switched to a VoIP service.

FWIW: I would check with Magic Jack to see if you can have multiple
units. I saw one of their infomercials and they seemed to indicate
that you could. If that is the case, you could get an old computer,
say, a 1mhz Celeron or Athalon running Win XP. Then put it in a corner
and dedicate it to running the MAgic Jack. I know someone who has
done this with his old laptop. But, he also has the laptop doing
lite file server duties as well.

I'll reiterate my suggestion for Skype. Although it is generally
a computer based service, you can get IP phones that are compatible
with Skype. They can be used without needing a computer. Check
the Skype web site for a list of compatible phones.

I could be wrong but I don't know any cell phone plans that charge extra

"Phone Power" and similar services are not computer based.

Thanks for clarifying that Phone Power and Skype do not necessarily
require a computer. I'll look into that. Right now I don't want to
spend $80 for PP so that is out, but maybe Skpe, or maybe PagePlus or
one of the major carriers has a plan that will work for us.

Okay, so I looked up PagePlusCellular's $30/mo plan and I have some
questions: (probably dumb questions but I really have never gotten
into the whole cell phone culture):

They say "Standard rates will apply for roaming, international voice,
international text and premium SMS. If you use more than the included
minutes/messages/data in this plan, you will be charged the overage
rates listed below. "

So : roaming. When would I be roaming? Is that any time I use the
phone outside my area code or ? Because here in L.A. where there are 3
or 4 area codes that could add up pretty easily at I think they said
an extra 10 cents a minute...

And these 1200 minutes - does that include the minutes when others
CALL US, or is that just when we call OUT?

a real cheapskate

Straight talk a wallmart cell phone, comes standard with unlimited
phone text picture message and internet, free computerized 411:( the
computerized 411 is less than useless and I didnt try the internet.
around here straighttalk is on verizon network and works fine.

NET 10 is my new cell provider:) around here its more reliable than
verizon.

50 bucks a month unlimited everything, phone text internet 411 with a
human being picture messaging too. although I havent tried the
internet access.

you buy the 50 buck card and the only added expense is sales tax.

verizons 10 buck friends and family add $8.86 in taxes and fees, call
it 9 bucks, almoost doubling the cost for friends and family
members.......

Net 10 appears to use the AT&T cell network around here which by my
testing is far better than verizons, way fewer dropped call areas.

I got pissed at verizon I started getting these dating texts from the
wierd number 70 705. they were interesting and I am getting divorced
so it was OK.

Out of curosity I finally sent a text back WHO ARE YOU, and got a
response in spanish.

the next day I got a text informing me I was now subbed to the 10 buck
a month premium message service.

The verizon CSR said I will take that off your bill they shouldnt of
done that! and blocked it so it couldnt happen again.

But I never got a text you have unsubbed so a few days later I called
back and the rep said yes your unsubbed.....

Then I asked the service ending question:)

Did this company need verizons permission to do this?

sir verizon partnered with them........:(:(:( partnered wth a spammer?

Thats why I am going to net 10.... verizon drove me away. I was with
them for over 15 years.....

No. PagePlus uses the Verizon Wireless cell phone network. You
are roaming anytime you are off that network. You could be
in New York on the Verizon network and _not_ be roaming.

Where did you come up with that? Phone Power with a 12 month contract
only costs $35.12 to start up. That includes your first month of

So I guess there're different ways to sign up... It's all rather

It's 4 cents a minute on the $80/2000 minute card. On the the 1200
minute plan overages are 10 cents per minute.

In my area there's an alternative to AT&T which offers DSL as fast as
your line allows plus landline service with unlimited long distance (and
all the premium calling features like ID, 3 way, voice-mail, etc., for
$40 per month.

That unlimited calling allows us to use less cell phone minutes.

Indeed, but it's certainly (free) the cheapest. The text transcripts of
the voicemail alone are worth the price of admission.

The 99-Cents-Only Stores (at least in California) sell 99-minute cards
for 99 cents. Good for 90 (or more likely 99) days. I used those
before GV arrived.

Gordon, now that I looked at Phone Power more closely it does seem to
be the solution for me.
Questions:

1) I am using Magic Jack now for my business line. It is plugged in
via my USB port. Can I use Phone Power AND Magic Jack?

2) So I can use any standard phone - cordless or corded - for the 2
Phone Power lines?

3) Is the service reliable? I read some reviews online and there were
a few reports of unreliability; and someone said something about
having to "bridge" it to your modem? I have no idea what that means! I
do have a cell phone but I keep it in the car and it's relatively
expensive to use so if I get rid of my ATT land line I need to know
that this PhonePower will be up and running at least 95% of the time!

4) Does using the computer while someone is talking on one or both of
the lines interfere with the voice quality/ reliablilty? (I have ATT
DSL, at about 5mb ps download speed as tested at DSL Reports.)

5) So all I pay to start is $35 and then they bill me each month? Or
is it an automatic withdrawal or ?

Thanks for the info and if you want to give me info to get a referral
bonus I'll be happy to use that since you gave me the info I need to

P.S. One more probably STUPID question:

Since Phone Power offers 2 lines, is it okay NOT to use a 2nd line? I
probably will sooner or later but right now we just have the one
cordless phone and I don't want to have to go out and buy a 2nd one at
this time.

But then there is this which actually costs $79.95. Is it not the same
thing?
http://www.amazon.com/Phone-Power-Broadband-Telephone-Service/dp/B003B42ZBE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&m=A1U1OLQDUY3F0V&s=generic&qid=1284404704&sr=1-1

Seems to be the same thing except that the 2nd one is referred by
Phone Power's own site so they are getting the extra money, no?

Yes.

Service is always there. I have never experienced an outage.
A few times an incoming call will experience a really bad echo.
I seem to get this about once a month. Hanging up and redialing
will solve the problem.

The Phone Power ATA has two network jacks: WAN and LAN. It is
easy enough to just plug the WAN port into an available jack
on your modem. No special hookup needed. But Phone Power
recomends that the ATA sit between your modem and your network.
That is; all your internal network wireing comes off the single
LAN port of the ATA. As I said, I didn't find that necessary.

A 5Mbps line should handle voice and data just fine. FWIW VoIP
only uses about 128Kbps of bandwidth.

I don't know. I choose the "Pay for the whole year at once" billing
option. It has not been ayear yet (but it's getting close) so I
havn't received a 2nd bill.

Sure. In fact the Phone Power adaptor ships with the 2nd line
disabled. You have to go to their site to activete the 2nd
line (no charge. Unlike Vonage who charges a monthly fee to
activate the 2nd line).

Yeah,
Phone power sells their retail combo packs at many locations,
including Best Buy. But dealing with Phone Power directly at
their site is probalby the best option (why add another party
to the transaction?). You can order up service and delay the
port of your current phone number (I waited till the end of the
30 day trial). In the mean time you can make outgoing calls
over Phone Power. You just can't receive them.

It only takes a few (in my case 3) days to recieve the Phone
Power adaptor after placing your order.

One note: When you first connect the Phone Power Adapter, it
will do a software update. While this is happening the front
panel lights will blink slowly. This will take about 10
minutes to complete. Just let it do it's thing. If you
interupt the software update you my end up "Bricking" the
Adapter.

BTW: tell them that Gordon Reeder sent you.

Thanks for taking the time to answer all my questions.
I'll call them to ask about using Magic Jack along side it, but other
than that it sounds good. The reason I may go with the Amazon
Marketplace seller is that it seems like such a great deal:
$79 credit towards service (4+ months free) and all the equipment I
need (except phone) for $45. Then just $21/month (including taxes and
fees) for the remaining year... If the quality and service is decent
and reliable then it seems like the answer to my desire to DUMP ATT's
exorbitant service for a land line.

By the way Magic Jack also works for this for a lot cheaper ($40/year)
BUT I don't like the quality of the voice with MJ. Hopefully Phone
Power is better in that respect. Otherwise, I have found MJ to be very
reliable and usable, but for long conversations it's a bit annoying in
terms of lousy sound quality. This COULD be the phone I have hooked up
to it! But I don't think so; it sounds like the service...

you can get a phone adapter, you plug your cell phone in and it lights
up your landline phone.

this and a net 10 unlimited everything 50 buck a month cell phone
service gives you a cell and lets you use your old landlines when you
are home

Thanks for that but right now I'm trying to lower my bill from $45/mo,
not increase it to $50. I guess if I had to use a cell phone a lot
this would be a way to use it for both home and car, but I really
don't need to use a cell phone except for emergencies so I just use
PagePlusCellular and buy $10 of minutes every 4 months.

No, you don't. I don't have a land line, but if I wanted Google Voice
calls routed to my cell - it can be done. I prefer using it via the
computer, that way I don't use up cell phone minutes.

One of the big reasons why we're with Verizon is the free roaming.
It's expensive when you get socked with it.

better than verizons.

How about telling your wife to shut up or pay the bill herself LOL
why can't she send emails instead of yakking all the time? I have
verizon landline at 41 per month, plus unlimited long distance...each
time they try to raise me, i call right back and threaten to leave
them, and they remove the increase..the same goes for cable companies
and i just got $384 off my home insurance, which they, like all the
others always wanting to raise the fees...and i did not lose anything
in the process as far as my insurance
