Am I the only one who got an email saying that one can buy space if one's google email account is too large?

Google gives you 15 GB of storage space. Don't see how you would need to
use 15 GB to store old emails.

But how does one know if they have exceeded or are near the limit and therefore need to start deleting old emails?

You will get a banner across the top telling you so. There is probably something in the settings telling you how much you are using. The 15GB isn't just email but total storage including Google Drive. I was using it to send some large files as I was getting frustrated with the 1 week expiration date on WeTransfer but at a disadvantage as I already had about 5GB of email. This is just the last few years.
