I found a "Tivo Box" for $10 at the local Goodwill. The box was
taped shut, so you never know what you are going to get, but I took a
chance on it. I figured what the heck - it would be fund to play around
with it in any case.

Everything looked complete when I opened it up. We just get free
over the air broadcast tv. I hooked the tivo up to our tv, and got to
enjoy a load of King of the Hill episodes the previous owner had
recorded. I hooked it up to the telephone line, and it registered the
unit, and set up a full month of service. I was able to pick up 3 low
power ntsc tv stations, see the program grid, and record a show.
Everything worked. If I wanted to, I could have set it up to work with
our digital converter box as well. However, I didn't like the thought
of having to pay a monthly fee - I thought there was some way to use
this like a basic VCR - tell it to record a certain channel on a certain
day & time each week. Evidently it won't even do that if you aren't
paying them the $12 a month. (this is a series 2 Tivo)

So, I did an inventory, and realized that there was more in there
than the box had listed. There was also a Tivo 802.11t wireless USB
adapter - which is evidently popular, because I sold it for $31 plus
shipping in under an hour on Ebay.

I listed the rest of it all on Craigslist for $12, and sold that in a
day. So, I got my initial $10 back, plus made a $30 return on my $10
investment. Oh, and I got to play around with some hardware for free -
always fun.

A linksys internet router and network print server.
I don't need the router, but the network print server
is going to be handy.

A Lands' End canvas tote sack.

Several other canvas tote sacks for grocery shopping.

An Audio Codes MP118 8 line VOIP gateway. $7.99.
it's a $600.00 piece of equipment. Seems to work.
Now I just have to find a VOIP provider that supports
it.

Small picture frame that had a weird abstract-type painting in it.
Wife wanted the frame for one of the paint-by-numbers '"galloping
horses" paintings she had done.
$10.00 because it was a real nice frame, and perfect fit.
As an aside, the wife took it to the Antiques Roadshow for kicks while
I was out hiking on the Appalachian Trail. Her best friend dragged
her there, because the friend had an old trumpet she thought was once
owned by Tommy Dorsey. Sadly, it was run of the mill and needed more
valve work than was worth doing.
But it turned our painting was a real lost Picasso, estimated to bring
+$250,000 on even a slow day at Sothebys.
She was out shopping at the same store when I came home, so I didn't
know squat. Next day was her birthday, so I put her paint-by-numbers
horses in the frame, and burned the Picasso in the auxiliary furnace.
You can google the "Vic Goes Hiking" episode of Antiques Roadshow if
you want more details.
Good news is the frame was estimated to be worth $40-60.
Lets split the difference and say $50. Gained 40 bucks there.
Even better, on the same trip to the store we scored a like-new fancy
Mr. Coffee - all the bells and whistles - for 5 bucks.
It's a $55 model and works perfectly. A $50 gain.
This one,

$90 in one day. So it depends on your luck on a given day.
People look at their fortunes differently.
I'm just happy nobody's the wiser about me being in Argentina.

BTW: I bought it at the Goodwill "last chance"
store. I'm not sure what I paid for it since it
was in with an armload of other stuff that was
bought by the pound.

It is a Linksys BEFW11p1. Quite the dinosaur.
But it will work with my HP Dj832c (both have
parallal printer ports). It's up and running now.
I diabled the router, NAT, DHCP. Assigned a static
IP to the LAN port and plugged it into my internet
modem/router. Installed a new printer in WinXP.
Rinse and Repeat for the other computers, and now
we can all print, just like a real network should.
