I am going to spending a bit of time at various hotels around the west. Sounds
like some perfect opportunities to, um, meet people. Any ideas on how to make
the most of it?

Smile. Be nice. Keep a journal of your impressions while in these cities, AND
the concerts.

If you have a little leisure time, take your journal and pencil, head out to
the pool area and find a lounger, and hang there, while writing in your
journal.

People will most likely stop to talk. Talk a LITTLE, about why you're there,
and how you're journaling in hopes of turning it into an article or review for
magazine...

People are fascinated by writers and any eccentricities will be tied in with
your "creativity."

Don't talk a lot. Answer the questions neatly, without a lot of extra
verbiage. Let them lead the conversation. Most people actually want someone
to listen, when they're talking. Be a listener.

Just out of curiousity, how far north are you going to make it?
Dawn, ever curious.

What exactly do you want to do, meet a dating prospect? If the hotel has
a pool, try hanging out there. You might also try asking the concierge
at the hotel for some suggestions on where to go to meet single people
your age. Check out local museums, parks, malls, and of course, bars and
health clubs.

Dude, I already sent you to the university and gave you a list of the local
bars.

What more do you need? :-)

There's a newsgroup and a website I think you might find helpful. They are:

A complete collection of pickup lines, from lame (ok, maybe they are ALL
lame), to completely off the wall:
http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~montymex/pickup/Intropickup.html

The page even has a little score card for how many times each one has
been used, and how effective it was.

Actually, a stunningly effective line is "Hi, I'm Mr. Wrong..."
Delivered right, it's a chick magnet.

I used to have a small printed button with "Mr. Wrong" on it and ...
Chick. Magnet. Irrestible Attraction.

The problem is, you have to take yourself along everywhere you go. I'd
suggest just taking some romance novels along. With all your
fears/inadequacies you probably couldn't make out in a women's prison. Imo,
your only chance to "meet" people, would be to either drink lots of beer
first, then hit the hotel cocktail lounge. Could also just stay in your
room, call an escort service (they make house calls, but Not very frugal)

Good idea, but I don't think Motel 6 offers concierge services.

BTW, if you're reading this SD - I sent you an email but it seems to have
bounced (or perhaps my Hotmail account is acting up again). Anyway, I'll
try to resend it tommorow...
