No wonder this firm is facing an uncertain future. Like Dell, HP
doesn't do good customer service or product quality control. Before
you throw cash at HP, check the following e-mail back-and forth.

=================
From:

Ken Spalding
kenn...@hotmail.com
To myhp...@hp.com

ESSENTIALLY, you're saying I'm stuck with an unusable HP printer.

The information I provided (attached) -- which I consider a formal
complaint -- should be forwarded -- BY YOU -- to one of the TS the
sites referenced below, and subsequently I should be contacted via an
appropriate respondent/site. A doubtful outcome, given "your"
apparent unwillingness to follow through. And please, no more
apologies.

Without question, I have acquired my last HP product. And among my
associates, I'm not alone in this determination.

No wonder we read that HP faces an uncertain future.

Dear Rose:

I HAVE, unfortunately, an HP Officejet 4500 Wireless All-In-One, which
I received some months ago as a gift.

HOWEVER, after trying myriad times to "connect" it to my HP Pavilion
a6000n Desktop PC, following all directions carefully, my PC doesn't
"recognize" the printer. Or vice versa. Result: I can't print from
my PC with the Officejet 4500.

Initially, a test print was successful, and the unit does copy. But
there is no response when attempting to print a simple document from
my PC.

During the installation attempts, after inserting the CD when
directed, I receive messages, "Windows was unable to install your
Officejet 4500 G510n-z," and "Windows could not find drives for your
device."

However, when searching my PC's innards, I consistently receive
messages stating "all drives have been installed" or the PC has all
necessary drives.

If you Google "Problems with HP 4500 Wireless All-In-One Printers" you
will find dozens of complaints identical to mine.

My guess is that, due to an HP manufacturing or quality control
shortfall, rather surprisingly, HP products don't necessarily match
up with other HP products! Like my HP PC doesn't work with the HP
4500.

A sales rep at Best Buy -- this date -- was somewhat nonplussed, but
was unable to offer any solutions, other than running disk drive
downloads from HP, which I have done numerous times. To no avail.

I'm sorry that I turned in my HP PSC 1210v all--in-one before
discovering the 4500 problem.

I'd like to think that if I could find an operable 1210, perhaps I'd
be back in business.

Thanks for your interest.

But I, like many complainants, are stuck with a product that doesn't
work as "advertised."

Again, check Google.

YEAH.

I and others I know got similar runarounds from HP "customer support."

The 4500 only costs about $55.00. But it's the principle that's the
sticking point.

I have a HP 6300 that works OK via USB, but that's easier than WiFi.

You can try a sanitize and start over approach:

Download the most current drivers for the printer and the wireless
device in your PC, but do not install yet.

Power off the printer.

Delete the printer (I assume you're using Windows of some kind). Delete
any old copies of drivers.

Back up your registry.

Use regedit to eradicate anything referring to your printer.

Reboot.

Check and verify the printer hasn't been resurected by Windows.

Reboot again.

Install the current drivers you downloaded previously.

Reboot yet again..

Log in with administrator priviledges.

Turn on the printer. With any luck, it'll connect to your computer.

Of course!

HP tech support offers nothing but additional Web sites to contact.
Which offer more places to contact.

A worthless runaround.

Gary, your complex directions essentially require one to be an IT
specialist to follow them.

Personally, I would be reluctant take all the steps you recommend for
fear of placing my PC at risk.

And if Hewlett had turned out a quality product -- one that's
compatible with another HP product -- an unsuspecting purchaser
wouldn't, and shouldn't, have to be put through such a daunting
journey merely to hook up a $59.00 printer!

HP is at fault here. And the consumer should not have to bail a
failing company out.

Agree.

Recommend this complaint be kept open until resolution is reached.

Thanks for the info.

Like you, I am having strong reservations about HP these days. I am
still milking life out of an old Deskjet 932C because the damn things
works so well! I am sure it will break at some point or they will quit
making cartridges for it. Until then...

About wireless: There is a lot of concern about the "smart" electric
meters around here because they are wirelessly connected to the power
company AND there are loads of people on alternative radio talking about
wireless computer connections around your house also being a problem.
Many seem to think all these radio waves can impact your health. I
think the jury is still out on the health issue, but I say why take the
risk if I don't have to? Considering what a pain these things can be to
get set up, I just say no.

My HP PC (a6000n), purchased in 2007, doesn't "recognize" HP wireless
printers, such as an Officejet 4500. So I can't connect the two
items.

I suspect that floundering HP intentionally made wireless printers
INCOMPATIBLE with older model PCs -- to try to force people to buy new
PCs?

What do you think?
