Mechanical pencils

I've tried several, but I don't seem to be able to find a mechanical pencil
using 0.5 mm lead that works for me. I'm referring to the kind that advance
lead by pushing a button on the back, the only kind there seems to be any
more. No matter how lightly I press while writing, the lead usually quickly
goes back into the pencil, which keeps happening as I write. Once in a
while the lead stays extended for a little while.
Anyone else have this problem? Yes, I could use an erasable ball-point but
sometimes I prefer a pencil. And erasables have their problems too, like
finding a brand that works. Or is it, probably, just me and my general
ineptitude?

AFAIK a short piece of lead behaves that way in all such pencils. Pull the short piece of lead out (or just keep clicking until it falls out) so that a new longer piece can feed into the barrel.

Does your pencil have a skinny cylindrical (not tapered) metal sleeve at the tip to hold the lead? A good pencil does.
I was Googling for an illustration of the pencil tip (no luck) and saw this:

There are 0.7, 0.9, 1.1, 1.4mm lead pencils--even a 2.0mm drafting
pencil.
All are larger and much more stable for actual writing. Prices range
from AutoPoint $3.50 on up to MontBlanc $199.00 and up. There must be
something out there that would satisfy a constant-lead-breaker-upper.
