Frugal trailer

I presently live in the deep south and a trailer camper works just fine.
However, I am planning to move back to Quebec and go for an advanced degree
at Laval U.

Do you think a trailer camper would be frugal due to the increased heating
expenses? Ernie

Even with something like an Airstream, I think it would be very
difficult to live in a camper during a Canadian winter. Put the camper
in storage and rent an apartment.

I've been in Canada in winter (February, about 30 years ago); I was not
able to get my rental car warm. Trying to keep a camper warm will be
difficult and expensive.

There isn't really any insulation at all. Just canvas. I plan to find a
lot near medical (Drs at Laval U). Ernie

But I've really become rather attached to the trailer. Afterall, it's paid
for. Maybe I could use a kerosene heater or something? Is it really that
cold in Quebec. I always thought they got the trade winds from the Atlantic

If you're "moving back to quebec" as you said in your first post, surely
you know what the weather is like. So which is it?

Laval U is not near Quebec City as someone suggested, Laval is just across
the river from Montreal. So unless there's another campus near Quebec
City (and you didn't say that in your post), you're talking about Montreal
type weather.

There is minor difference between Montreal and Quebec City, like in the
spring the cold will hang on longer in Quebec City. But while the winters
have generally seemed to warm up, there are still plenty of cold days.

To answer your question, I lived in Quebec for over 10 years but I never
stepped outside. When I finally left it was summer so I had no idea what
the winters were like. I really don't care much to discuss it. But now I
want to head back up north and finish my degree and help society by proving
my scientific theory with the Drs at Laval U. Ernie

Set it up inside a heated building. You won't be able to insulate it
well enough to make it livable and survivable. A kerosene heater would
not be adequate or safe.

As I suggested earlier, put it in storage and rent an apartment.

For another data point, look up your camper model with the manufacturer
and see what they recommend for the minimum temperatures to use it in.

Thanks, Gary. I appreciate the advice. Sounds like I will have to rent, at
least in the winter. But you can bet I'm going to do a lot of camping when
the weather warms up. Ernie

I actually know someone who did that in Canberra Australia
in the 60s, with a simple tent, not a trailer camper.

He chose to work at night and sleep in the tent during the
day when it was warmer.

And then in the depths of winter he basically camped
in the air conditioning plant room at the Uni because
it was too cold in the camping ground.

And Canberra doesn�t get as cold as Laval.
