at Target. Now would these "expire" if I delayed 6 months in installing
in my "tank"?

Nothing happens until you add the minutes to your phone. Whenever you
do add them, they extend your expiration time by the amount on the
card. For example, say it is the beginning of August and you have 60
days left on your phone (i.e., expires the beginning of October). If
you add a 90-day card now, your expiration date becomes the beginning
of January. If you wait until October, then add the minutes, your
expiration date is still the beginning of January. You can extend
your expiration date this way out to (IIRC) somewhere around a year
ahead (check the website for details).

That comes out to 20.x cents per minute. Virgin Mobil starts their per
minute price at 18 cents. You can also get a free phone on line and I think
the service is better, complete online tracking of the account and
monitoring of use. I switched about 6 months ago.

I used to love my Tracfone since my cell phone use is very limited. But they
changed service providers in my area about six months ago and ever since,
it's been one dropped call after another. Then I went out of town for a
week, planning to use up my remaining minutes phoning home before getting
rid of the thing for good. There was supposed to be coverage, but in fact I
couldn't talk for more than 30 seconds before the call dropped--over and
over. Now it's not a bargain at any price.

Tracfone ought to pay some attention to the quality of their local carriers.

My Tracfone uses Cingular (now ATT) GSM locally. I'm pretty happy
with the local coverage and call quality. However, I recently went on
a road trip from the Portland, OR area to the western edge of
Minnesota and back. Tracfone's coverage map notwithstanding, I rarely
got signal with my Tracfone during the trip, even along the interstate
and in bigger towns. For some reason, my (Cingular) Tracfone did not
get any service in one particular town in South Dakota, while a
local's Cingular phone did. Maybe the Cingular service in SD isn't
GSM, I don't know. In any case, I was pretty disappointed in the
coverage outside of my local area.

Tracfone recently replaced my older motorola phone with an updated phone
after informing me that my phone was very soon to be out of date with
the service in my area. The replacement phone was fully free - postage
paid by tracfone. Earlier this year, I was getting no service in many
areas, including Phoenix & the DC area, but had no problems in my New
England area..

TDMA coverage is going away here, so word is older phones that use
that service (like my old Tracfone) won't work for much longer. The
newer Tracfones for my area are all GSM. Probably a similar situation
in your area.

Nice of them to give you a new phone -- maybe I jumped the gun by
buying a new (GSM) phone earlier this year and deactivating my old
one. It wasn't very expensive, however.

In any case, Tracfone advertises my new GSM phone as "single rate",
meaning no roaming but coverage across much of the US that is served
by the same carrier that I have locally (as shown on the coverage map
on their website). The map shows somewhat sparse coverage in the
plains states, except around the interstates and bigger cities. My
recent experience differs considerably.

Page Plus... use any CDMA phone ( Verizon, Sprint, InPlus, ... ) rates
between 12c-5.7c/minute recarges every 120 days
T-Mobile to-go... GSM. Rates around 10c/minute and if you go gold...
all refills are 1 year!

Do you get the phone for free, or do you have to file for a rebate?
I've been after amp'd for my $100 rebate for about 5 months and I now
think I probably will not get it.

We've have several phones on Page Plus for a year. Buying recharge
minutes on ebay or over the phone, with low usage, the monthly cost is
phenomenally low ($10/120 days). No complaints on usage, though you
may have to "double dial" in some locations when roaming.

Some say you can do even better using TMobile prepaid. If the phone
lasts about 3.5 years, the monthly minimum is about the same, but you
have to buy a $100 (gold) card to start.

Assuming tmo to-go covers your area and you have exceptionally low
usage it's a great deal. Over 11 years it works out to like $1.60/
month for 11 minutes.

Page plus seems like the best kept secret in pre-pay these days
though... even if it is their own fault since their website sucks.
Assuming you are in an area covered by Verizon "InPulse" ( like the
NE ) it's a phenomenal deal.

Do a Google search for
Tracfone bonus codes

It is easy to get a substantial number of additional
minutes or a lengthened expiration period if you enter
the appropriate code when you are activating a card.

You can cut your cost per minute in half this way.
