Clayton, the largest manufacturer of manufactured homes in the U.S.,
has introduced the first green manufactured home by a major
manufacturer in the U.S. They haven't priced it, but hopefully it will
be more affordable than green prefabs and designs by others in the
past.

The "i-house" is a modernist design which features bamboo floors,
point-of-use hot water, solar panel option, a roof designed for water
catchment, and a unique separate, detached second bedroom/bath unit.

The "i-house" was introduced at their show in Knoxville, TN, at the
end of Oct. 2008.

I am going to be blogging this house (link above), following articles
and developments in Clayton's entrance into "green" building. I'm not
connected to the company in any way.

I ask the question, will it be Clayton's Prius, or Edsel?

If you are interested in this sort of thing, please visit my blog page
and comment on what you think of their rad design.

Thank you.

If by first you mean something else, I guess you are correct. Here are
some others that predate your "first"

David Bennert, co-founder of Innova Homes.

David Bennert is co-founder of Innova Homes, a small building company in
Asheville, N.C., that builds about six homes a year. His style: modular.
His reasons: speed of construction, pricing and quality control. But he
has a new specialty: being green.

Modular homes are built in a factory and shipped to the job site, where
they are fastened to the foundation and each other. A project might take
only a few months, making cash flow more manageable and reducing financing
costs. A simple home made from two modular pieces can be done in 30-45
days and a Cape Cod in 45-90, Bennert notes, adding that because the
factory work is completed at a fixed price, there's less room for budget
errors.

"The homes are also better-sealed and less prone to mold since they're
constructed in a dry environment with well-stored and well-maintained
materials," says Bennert. They generate less construction waste, too.
