Where to buy major appliances?

Since late January I've been trying to get a new Sears combination
microwave/convection oven repaired. Still no functioning convection oven
after well over a dozen tech support visits. Last visit I was told I would
get it replaced within 72 hours. That was six days ago. No phone call. No
new MW.

The problem is, Sears is certainly not going to get my money in the
future, especially for a major appliance. But some years ago I got a
GE refrigerator from a local business and the warranty service was
_terrible_. Every problem was said to be my fault and not covered.
I've heard lots of bad stuff about Best Buy. Wards is long gone. Home
Depot? No way! Maybe Lowes? And Sears used to be so good! What a
shame! Them and HP. Probably others as well that I'm not aware of.

Where to buy stuff anymore?

Always use your Costco Amex card (or another Amex card tha doubles the
warranty) for appliances (no matter where you buy it) if you're not
going to buy an extended warranty since at least you get a second year free.

Also, I know for computers, the extra Amex year of warranty is in
_addition_ to the two year warranty you get from Costco, even though the
second year of that warranty is technically not a factory warranty (Amex
says that they double the factory warranty to a maximum of one extra
year). I don't know if this also applies to appliances, and trying to
get a straight answer out of Amex is darn near impossible. I found that
Costco was significantly more expensive for the same appliance than
Sears, to the point where the extra year of warranty was not worth the
extra cost.

Last two dishwashers I bought I got at Sears. They were about 20% less
expensive for the same model at Home Depot. However if you tend to buy
extended warranties on appliances then Sears is not a good place because
they charge significantly more for an extended warranty than Home Depot
charges, negating the price advantage of Sears.

I'm not a fan of extended warranties, but appliances seem to have become
significantly less reliable and significantly more expensive to repair,
so buying at Costco with an Amex card, if you do get essentially a three
year warranty at no extra cost, might be worth it.

I have a friend that worked for a large repair shop, and they had a guy
that did little other than run around fixing built in MW/Convection
ovens. In that case the grease would get in the fan and then the fire
department would come.

Maybe they are all fabulous now, but I'm not buying one!

hi brian, I find it fascinating that Sears repair charges the
following to get a Sears furnace with air serviced.

Travel to the call, no problem for me:)

1/2 travel for the tech to exchange toolkits at his truck:( to me
thats a BIG RIP OFF!!:( 2 second exchange of tool kits.....

Do note since this is sears service company policy I NEVER BUY SEARS
ANYTHING THAT REQUIRES SERVICE!!!


Policies like this are destructive to your reputation and hurt future
sales.....
