Can anyone direct me to some inexpensive mailers for sending 3-4 comic
books at a time? They don't have to be padded, just decent cardboard would
be fine.

I realize the postal service provides this if you send priority mail, but
that ends up costing over twice as much for postage.

I've found padded envelopes for about $1 each, but I'm hoping I can find a
simple cardboard mailer for hal that or less. Thanks!

Can't you just DIY and find some relatively small size "used" boxes for
free? If you are sending this stuff book rate it's the weight that is
the greater factor. If the box runs a bit larger than you need, but the
overall package is still light, it shouldn't run up your postage cost.

magazines & comic books typically do not qualify for media (or bound
printed matter) rates.

My suggestion is to use 9x12 inch envelopes (about 10 cents each) with a
piece or two of cardboard where the magazines are placed in a plastic
bag or wrapped in Handiwrap as a moisture barrier. If sending many,
however, your time may be better spent elsewhere & paying for the boxes.
