I was trying to find audio book versions of some of the classics of
fiction from across recent and past recent decades/centuries, but had
trouble. Can anyone direct me to where these might be found?

Any helpful feedback appreciated,

While it may not be entirely legal (depending on the copyrights) you
might try one of the binary newsgroups...
alt.binaries.audiobooks
alt.binaries.mp3.audiobooks
alt.binaries.mp3.audiobooks.highspeed
alt.binaries.mp3.audiobooks.repost
alt.binaries.sound.audiobooks
alt.binaries.sounds.audiobooks
alt.binaries.sounds.audiobooks.repost
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.audiobooks

You can use a free binaries downloader like the one from here...
http://www.shemes.com/

Most audiobooks, when encoded as mp3, use fairly low bitrates.
This mean they don't take up as much memory in an mp3 player
as most music files.

There is also the internet archive.
http://www.archive.org/details/audio
http://www.archive.org/details/audio_bookspoetry

You can get a fairly good MP3 player for around $20 these days.

Real obvious suggestion: Have you tried your local library? If they are
on any kind of network they can always get something from another branch
if they don't readily have a title you are looking for.
