I bought the bigger (TN360?) Brother cartridge for roughly $20 from some
buy.com entrepreneur. Works fine.

I had an equivalent Samsung. It chewed paper up from Day 1, and when I
finally opened up the replacement toner cartridge I bought when I bought
the printer, it didn't work. Samsung told me the warranty on the
cartridge was only a year. Too bad the original cartridge lasted a
couple of years.
I learned two things: (1) Don't buy a new cartridge until you're pretty
close to needing it. (2) Don't buy Samsung.
Until then I liked Samsung. They provided linux drivers too.
