I hear the MacDonald's double cheese burger is one. The regular
cheeseburger is 99 cents and the double is $1.

What lost other leaders do you know?

Hmm. I've eaten a number of them. I call them Double Cheapburgers,
I'll get one of those and a $1 Mickey Chickie. A man's gotta have
variety. My favorite was when they had the $1 Big and Nasty.

I once read a book about McDonald's. It said that the basic burger
was a break even proposition. They made the money on the soda and/or the
fries.
At least one McDonald's here in SF does not take part in the $1
promos as corporate can not force prices on franchisees.
The same book also said that soda is a huge profit. Coke is willing
to sell syrup to them at a very low price do to the volume of
sales, advertising featuring Coke and fear of losing them to Pepsi.

Correct. Selling a canister of syrup is relatively cheap - much
cheaper to ship than bottles of cans because of the weight of the
water. The syrup costs pennies a cup. Water comes from the
municipality, water filters are cheap, and CO2 isn't expensive either.
The cups, lids and straws are cheap in massive volume.

The burgers are there to get you to buy pop and fries.

Similarly in movie theatres, the entrance fee in the budget ones just
covers the costs, but they rake in big bucks on the consessions.

I noticed at my local McDonalds that there is a limit of 10
cheeseburgers or double that you can order at one time at the driveup
window. I am not sure why.

Do you mean "loss leader" ???

I think you mean "loss" leaders? Any of the "value menu" items could
be considered a loss leader "if" you don't buy a beverage or fries to
go with it. The profit margin on sodas and side orders is definitely
higher than the entrees; even higher if the person behind the counter
convinces you to upgrade your order (suggestive selling is a perfect
means of increasing sales; a FF store I worked in way back when saw
sales increase by 35% after I emphasized this practice to the
employees). Of course there has to be a motivation for them as well
like weekly prizes or recognition. One D.A. manager during our
meetings would say something like "we need to raise the sales so "I"
can get a bigger bonus".

Perhaps huge orders hog up too much time for a service that is supposed
to be quick pass through and considered inconsiderate to all the other
cars in the line?

Trivia question relating to this thread. Name the largest fast food
company in the world in terms of location and sales.
Hints: It is not McDonald's. The company is based in the U.S.

That's a trick question. The largest brand is probably McDonald's. But
the largest company could have more than one brand (i.e. restaurants by
more than one name).

OK, then it'd be Yum! Brands, a/k/a KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Long John
Silver's, and A&W.

Speaking of which, they opened an A&W or two here in Austin, Texas a
few years ago, but they don't have actual frosted glass mugs for their
root beer on tap like some of the A&W restaurants had in California when
I lived there for a few years. I was a little disappointed, although I
can understand the decision...

If it's not KFC's parent Company Yum! then it's Subway Sandwiches or
Starbucks coffee. Both those place will NOT guarantee franchise territory
exclusives so they oversell their franchises.

McDonalds will protect territory thus buying a McDonald's franchise is far
far far far more profitable than a Sub shop or a KFC joint. McDonald's
will make far more money with far less locations than KFC or Subway or
Starbucks, whichever one of those is the largest int he world.

Both of the local (PA) LJS/A&W's have them.

Random Factoid: In my semi-immediate area, there is a small row
of shops with THREE pizza joints, right next to each other. Two
are adjacent, with the other about four doors down. I think all
three deliver.

A Pizza Hut, a Domino's, and a home-grown brand called Hell.
Really - http://www.hell.co.nz

Guess which one (and only one) I have patronised, you sinner?

I cannot recall eating from KFC since I was a child, back when
they had those cardboard buckets, and it was called, "Kentucky
Fried Chicken." Same with Pizza Hut (but without buckets or
chicken.) Although I will admit to steering into some Taco Bell
drivethroughs, for their swill, numerous times, while
Californicating, years ago. Standard, youthful decadence, I
guess.

I haven't eaten from Subway (dry, white, fluffy, tasteless) in
years. And I am proud that I have never, ever, worshiped the
false god of Starbucks (cuz I'm too sophisticated for them.) I
would slurp the dregs of Brittney Spears' morning coffee, before
I would sink down to patronising a Starbucks.

These days, if I need fast food, I am more likely to walk into
some middle-eastern kebab place. Or spring for a gourmet burger.
