I currently have an unlocked GSM Nokia phone being used
on another carrier OTHER than ATT

Thinking of going to ATT tho so can I use THIS phone
with the ATT system thereby avoiding the contract
commitment?

What's your question? My sister uses AT&T for her cell phone service.
She depends on her cell phone for her business and she's a happy
customer.

I WAS an AT&T customer.
I WAS very happy with them and their service.
Until they shut down the TDMA network and forced
us over to the new GSM system. Problem is they
wouldn't honor my existing contract, they wanted
me to pay full price on a new handset. They offered
discounts on a few select handsets that I didn't want.
So when push came to shove, I went over to Sprint.

If it's unlocked, it should be usable with their network,
provided it supports all the frequencies that they use.
If it's a quad-band phone (a "world phone"), it should.
If it's not, figure out what frequencies it supports and
find out what AT&T uses.

Probably the easiest way to go about all this is to find
a friend who has AT&T service and will let you use their
SIM card for a moment. Take it out of their phone and put
it in yours and see if it works. If it does, your phone
works with the AT&T network. Of course, you'd probably
want to offer to reimburse the friend for any minutes you've
used or do it off-peak if they have a plan where they have
unmetered service at certain times.

You might, for all I know, also be able to go to an AT&T
store and borrow one of their SIM cards and try it out in
the store. I'd just tell them that you have a phone that
you really like a lot and that you want to keep, and you
want to try it out on their network. They usually have phones
in the store with SIM cards in them for demo purposes, or at
least the T-Mobile store does that.

Should be no problem. I slipped the AT&T sim card in my wife's new PDA,
and it worked fine.

Many of the AT&T stores have demo phones right there on the wall that are
active. If you talk to the manager or salesperson and ask, I'm suer they
would let you try the SIM card.

Aside from that, call a number you own with caller ID and you can get the
number to the "wall phone" and call customers during peak times to say
hello. :)

call their service department and ask. i got a pda on ebay which
turned out to be also a cell phone [used to be verizon], and they
checked the model number and assured me that it will work with them.
of course i haven;t actually tried it. i'm going to take my current
phone and the new one into one of their stores and have them transfer
my card.

if you are thinking prepaid, the two plans they offered me were one
with no activation charge and 25 cents per minute or a dollar per day
on days when you actually use the phone and then 10 cents per minute.
i don't use it often, so i'm on the first, but i'm trying to see if i
can get something cheaper. i need myland line because i have a
dial-up isp, so i use that for most of my calls.

Curious.... what OPDA did she get? And how does she
like it so far?

Probably. The phone needs to support the proper frequencies as well.
There are several bands, and AT&T told me flat out aht a phone I was
going to buy wouldn't work because they used the lower frequencies in
the midwest and this phone iddn't support them.

http://www.cellguru.net/prepaid_compare.htm has a list of prepaid plans
in a comparison chart.

Well I went and talked to local ATT dealer and they
said it was "technically" possible to use my current
phone but that I would STILL need a 2 year contract!!!

Bottom line.... how can I get ATT service WITHOUT any
contract short of going pre-paid?
