When it comes to buying something, where do you find the best value?

I guess it depends a lot on the something, doesn't it?
Ones selection is also going to be limited by things like
location, time available to search, even knowledge.

What are you looking to buy? Tools? Real Estate? Pets?
Guns? Alcohol? Hookers? Music?

There aren't many places that you'll find the best value
for everything. :)

Garage sales, Costco, Trader Joe's, the 99-Cents-Only store.

Nawww, that used to be true. Until craigslist. But you can't depend on
craigslist for the best value for everything. -Dave

Yeah, ebay is good for certain cell phone accessories. Other than that,
craigslist wipes the floor with ebay. Ebay is for all intents and purposes
dead. -Dave

I guess this is why ebay is having so much trouble getting people to
use their services and why their books overflow in red ink. :)

One would be nuts to buy (and pickup) books, CDs, videos, etc off
Craigslist. Similarly, one would generally be nuts to buy (and have
sent) furniture, machinery, electronics, etc off eBay.

Well when there is a better service that is FREE, the inevitable is that the
paid service will fail. -Dave

WELL, since you brought it up... The food quality, food selection, service
and cleanliness are all about equal. Fair comparison, I would say...

Must depend on where you live, I guess. I can find just about anything on
craigslist that I would think to search for on ebay.

Odd comment. Are you saying craigslist users are nuts? Hundreds of
millions of users can't all be wrong.

Yet it happens every day. Go figure.

Bottom line, craigslist and ebay perform the same function. That is,
connecting buyers with sellers. One is a paid service, one is free. The
free one is better. Not because it is free, either. -Dave

On the other hand craigslist is great for getting rid of stuff. The
last time I moved I wanted to get of some furniture. 30 minutes after I
posted the offer I was on the phone making arrangements.

If hundreds of millions are buying books, CDs & videos off Craigslist,
then YES, I'd say they are wrong / nuts. Most all can be mailed to
one's home for a fraction of the cost of driving to pick them up via
Craigslist (plus eBay has a significantly greater selection). On the
other hand, I'd like to see any reference to support your claim that
there are "hundreds of millions" of media product buyers on Craigslist.

Better yet, care to provide a reference that there are "hundreds of
millions" of buyers for all products on Craigslist. No wonder you
can't see the difference.

Agreed, but generally speaking, that's where Craigslist has it's
advantages - items that are costly to ship and/or should be inspected
prior to purchase. It's hard to fathom anyone buying used furniture,
used electronics, etc off eBay, just as it's hard to fathom anyone
searching / buying for media products on Craigslist .

Then again, people still buy media products via retail when most are
available via eBay for a fraction of the cost, so I guess there are
probably some who think it's a deal to drive 10 miles to save a few
dollars on a book.

Aw, c'mon. It depends on what I am wanting to buy. Too broad a topic.

I will say that I believe in buying a car close to home. Makes it a
lot less inconvenient if you need ot leave the car there and get a
ride or loaner car.

I also try to give my business to small independent owners, like mom
and pop restaurants. I shun Walmart for most purchases.

The question is meant to be vague....and to encourage discussion as to
where one finds good values.

So where do you like to shop to get GOOD VALUE for your money?

Oh, sorry, I'm a guy. I don't like to shop so that disqualifies me.

Understood....I too hate to shop.

One more reason to know where to go to get what you need at a good
price so you can get on with life.

It'll be even more dead if "The Feds" have their way and start trying
to tax the transactions.

And let's not forget Dollar Tree and Big Lots, online there's also
Overstock.com (can't beat the $2.95 shipping)

There's only one BCF in my town; very similar to Ross or Marshalls but
not worth driving 20 miles out of my way. I like Tuesday Morning
although sometimes it causes the claustrophobia to kick in (it's so
small and the shelves are so high with narrow aisles).

Anyone else?

Considering that this IS the misc.consumers.frugal-living group I
would expect this discussion to be one of the most active.

Or does everyone look for WORST value when you have to purchase
something?

No...you see it's like this. We're all "frugal" so that means for the
most part we don't spend our money. Being extra frugal we can find
these quality items at garage sales, Craigslist or other non-
traditional outlets like Big Lots and Dollar Tree. Worst value would
be buying the latest 50 inch plasma TV at full retail price regardless
of what store sells it. There's not much return on the investment
(unless you're an extreme hedonist and value your pleasure over
everything else in life...and big TV's are your personal Nirvana).
But paying $3 for a Sunbeam radiant heat toaster at a garage
sale...now that's a great value because that thing will last another
20 years.

Depends entirely on what it is that needs to be bought.

Or they dont see any point in discussing where they get the best value.

Or maybe they feel that anyone reading here would already be aware of
the obvious places like ebay and craigslist and garage sales etc etc etc.

Sure, but I doubt that anyone can tell me about a place where I can do
that that I'm not already aware of with the vast bulk of the stuff I buy.

> When I started the discussion, I was not looking for a list of store names....fugal is where you find it.

Sure, but again, the obvious places like ebay and craigslist and the salvos etc
should be know to those who want to get the best value for what they buy.

I just bought an SD card reader from hongkong using ebay, for just $1, with free shipping
and am about to buy another because the first one works fine and its such excellent value.
