Hi. I've been looking for a cheap place to buy computer/electronic
cables. Most brick-n-mortar stores charge about 3 times what the
cables should cost and most websites have great prices but charge
about $10 of shipping. I usually only need about 1 cable at a time.
Any suggestions?

Computer swap meets used to be the place to buy stuff like that, but I
haven't been to one in a long time. The 99-Cents-Only stores have various
kinds of cables for 99 cents.

But the 99 cent stores sell low quality cables and the selection
is hit and miss. You didn't say where you live. Around here we
have a few Computer Surplus outlets that stock a veriety of cables.
And then there is PCH Cables that sells nothing but cables.

Do you have a local computer periodical? Check in there. Or find
out where the local computer shops advertise and see if there is
a cable store advertising with them.

Hit+miss, yes, but I bought the same Belkin USB cable (the one with the
little lights on the ends) for 99 cents that Fry's was selling for $29.95.
Yeah, I saw them at Fry's after I bought some for 99 cents. Some stuff is
good, some stuff is crap. Just like shopping anywhere else.

LA area. We have the usual computer chain stores. Few bargains except some
of the advertised specials.

Mostly we buy them at yard sales, actually. I can't remember the last time
we had to buy a cable at a store.

For really basic stuff, try grocery stores and places like Home Depot.
They often seem to have more reasonable prices than big electronics
stores. Discount stores like Target or Wal*Mart might be worth
checking out too.

Thanks for the ideas, everyone. We live in Portland, OR.

I did some poking around here and found this cool store:

http://www.freegeek.org/

It looks like a Goodwill for computer parts!

So does Wal-Mart, believe it or not. Not quite that cheap though, but
not bad either.

WHAT!! You live in Portland, OR!?? Why did you not say
so? Look, pick up a copy of Computer Chips at your local
PC Shop. THere are several surplus shops in Portland and
Vancouver that sell cables at reasonable prices. You got
Wacky Willies and Surplus Gizmos to name two. THen if you
are near Corniluis PAss road you go to PCH Cables. They
have a well stocked store and the lowest prices on new
cables anywhere.

And Free Geek is great. Think about vollintering(sp) there
sometime. But their stock is limited to what happens to
come in their door. They also don't always know what they
get in. I was working in recieving one day and they got
a bunch of SATA power adaptors and data cables. THey
just recycled them.

Try the Bizzness phone book...under Cable. I found a cable outlet I
didn't know existed.

Was going to mention Big Lots, but now I'd say NO. Got sticker shock at
Best Buy for a 6-foot USB ext cable. $30 price tag, but it had
gold-plated ends (Wow!). Found a travel kit at Big Lots with a 3 and
6ft usb cables, for $7. Two weeks later, the 6-footer is now
unrecognized, possibly defective, my puter tells me.

I second, third and fourth www.monoprice.com

If they have the cable you need it will be top notch and dirt cheap.
Every single time I have shopped with them the savings have been
huge. Like I pay $10 for a cable that most places want $80 for ( and
some wanted $200 ).

Check them out.

Amazingly reasonable shipping costs, too. Next time I need a cable...
Ordinary ones are easy to find at yard sales, but you have to go out of your
way to get a USB extension cable (expensive at the usual stores) so you
don't have to go behind your computer every time you want to plug in a device.

I've only bought from them once, but it was a good experience and I
would buy from them again.

STAY AWAY......

from the "Big Box" stores and Radio-Shack!!! "Monster" products are a huge
ripoff!
A total waste of money and they have been specially trained by "Monster" to
push this
shit..and push hard they do!

Of course, this is *MY OPINION*.....
This keeps Monster from trying to sue me too :)

Actually, the upper-strata Monster products (completely unfamiliar to most
consumers) are superb cables. I've gone through an awful lot of "megabuck"
cabling while fine-tuning my system, and settled on a couple different Monster
products for the most critical analog links.

That aside, for the original query, you can do a lot worse than scouring eBay.
For cabling a little rarely used video system, I purchased a bunch of AR
(Acoustic Research) cables that way, and was pleased with their quality and
solid construction at modest cost.

Thanx! Good timing....was just about to pay $8 more at Usbgear for my
usb repeater cable. I'd be happier than a pig in poop if this works.

I've bought dozens of cables of all types from them and have never been
disappointed.

Post back when you get the USB cable and let me know what you think.
