Again, why reinvent the wheel? Use craigslist. Since I found that I
haven't visited ebay once, and I don't miss ebay. -Dave

Why him? For the "Virgin" branding?

He doesn't need any money it might make, and unless
its done with great care, the cheesed off buyers and
sellers it would almost surely create, would sour on
the other Virgin products.

> ... to look in to the feasibility of creating a website

If Virgin were interested, they could have bought and
re-branded any number of wannabees over the last
few years, most recently BidVille.

Creating a new one from scratch is daunting.

Knowing what eBay/Ostock/Bidville/etc mistakes to
avoid requires having paid deep attention to the
on-line auction marketplace (something even eBay
fails at).

Only The Don is up to this task.
Petition him.

I can see more use in asking Yahoo to come back into the UK auction
arena.

I think George W. Bush should create a website to compete with eBay.
Then after a few hundred listings he could put a "Mission
Accomplished" banner on the homepage.

For one thing, Craiglist is for private-party sellers, not people
seeking to earn an under-the-table income, and if you are found out,
your posts start getting flagged off and you can get restricted or
banned from the site.

Other than that, I LOOOOVE Craigslist!

I am not sure if you can get banned, but Craigslist has only a very
limited usability.

Yes, you can get banned, and it may have a limited usability, but what
it does, they sure got it right. It wasn't designed for money-making
but for connecting people with others in their own neighborhood -- a
virtual community bulletin board.

If you're a Mormon girl living in Mesa, there's
no better place than craigslist to find a place
to get started in your nude modeling carreer.

If "eBay" have any trademarks or other patents etc that they feel
"Craigslist" is using without permission they *have* to pursue
"Craigslist" for such infringement. Even if both are owned by the same
"holding" company. Otherwise others can use "eBays" lack of defence of
such things against "eBay" should "eBay" try and take them to court over
similar "infringements".

Does that make sense?

From the borrom of the Craigslist Factsheet:
http://www.craigslist.org/about/factsheet.html

Q: Is there a connection between craigslist and eBay?
A: eBay acquired 25% of the equity in craigslist from a former shareholder
in august of 2004.

So eBay don't own Craigslist outright, they do have a significant
shareholding.

eBay doesn't not own Craigslist. A disgruntled former employee who
owned somewhere in the neighborhood of 20% of Craigslist sold his stock
to eBay.

What I understand from reading the people who follow such things is that
it is ultimately probably a precursor to a hostile takeover attempt,
which apparently is eBay's standard operating procedure or, if I may,
their M.O.

Arrrngh. You're guessing at trademark,
not patent or copyright.

So he's incorrect and difficult to understand.
You're just plain incorrect.

And neither concept seems to have a thing
to do with the topic of eBay's
relationship to craigslist.

I hope I spelled Craig correctly.

Well, If eBay takes over CL, for sure it will be to shut them down or
change them into a mini-eBay, in which case droves of people just like
me will leave.

Craig Newmark has already said (at the time of that stock sale) that he
realized in retrospect it was a bad decision to give that person so much
stock. It's a privately-held corporate, and eBay does not have a seat
on the board, and I think that is part of why they are so miffed,
although they claim they are suing because CL is not giving them the
return on their investment that they expected to get.

Yep. I think that it is more of a "community service" than a "robust

Another issue is that craigslisters are flaky and I get about 40% of

I am sorry for the double negative -- my text expander that I use for
work (that does things like change "egd" to "esophagogastroduodenoscopy"

Truthfully, eBay does NOT own a controlling interest in CL, and CL
doesn't want them to own a controlling interest.
