Can anyone suggest a chain that has a better every day price? I
would be quite happy to buy it a gallon at a time, rather than in
quarts, since I always need a gallon or more.
Thanks!
First, make sure whatever you buy meets the SAE rating for your
vehicle. This rating, such as SG or SH in the SAE ring printed on the
back designates the standard the oil meets. If it's equal or exceeds
the rating needed for your vehicle, you are good to go. I find the
best price on oil at WalMart or Meijer.
I see oil all the time at the dollar store that meets NO standard. It
says, "This oil is miscible with all SAE oils." That means that it
will mix with other oils. It probably would not be good for a
lawnmower. So think of the rating first. Extend the change interval a
bit, but buy oil that is the proper quality.
Wal-Mart sells either 4 or 5 quart containers of valvoline pretty cheap.
How cheap, I don't remember. But valvoline is good stuff, as long as the
SAE rating is what you need. And I'm sure the cost was less than
2/quart. -Dave
A few months ago I would have told you, K-Mart. I was getting their stuff
for about $7.50 a 5 quart jug. Last month it had been raised up to about
$10. I was in there last week, and it's now $15. Don't know about a good,
"every day price" any more. I just keep my eyes open for sales at Auto Zone
and Kragen. I've given up on Pep Boys. It seems that all of their sales now,
are nothing but "mail-in rebate" deals.
The best deal I found in my part of Canada is Walmart Lube when i have my
oil changed. It's about $1.00 a quart cheaper when they change it as
oppossed to me buying 5 quarts off the shelf. 3 months ago it was $1.51 for
Pennzoil/Quaker state quart bulk plus tax where as an imperial gallon (5
quarts) was about $13.00 off the shelf (2.60 a quart).
I use 5W-30 so the 5W-20 was even more off the shelf.
