I don't really know how to find out the size of the marketplace for a
piece of equipment used in electronics companies. That's pretty much
all such companies, whether R&D, manufacture or retail. Any pointers
on how to assess the size of such a market, both in one country and
worldwide would be appreciated.
thanks, NT
Hard to say and/or find out, especially with this little information.
I bet you there's a much larger market for small tools like e.g. tips
for soldering irons than there is for fully automated assembly lines
(exaggerated extremes on both ends) - not that I would know either.

Talk to those that are currently serving that market. They'll know.
You can ask them how big is the market and what percentage of it that
they have. Now one or more company might not be willing to answer
that question, but most will if you approach them politely.
