Subject: Memorial Design Contest on the Lakeshore Asylum Cemetery

April 2009

The Psychiatric Survivor Archives, Toronto (PSAT) is pleased and
proud to announce four prizewinners of its Memorial Design Contest on
the Lakeshore Asylum Cemetery.

The First Place Prize for $650 is awarded to Karin Sonne;
Second Place Prize for $250 is awarded to Paul Draper; and
Third Place Prize for $50 each is awarded to both Keith Brown and
Andrew Clegg.

The Design Selection Committee consisted of representatives of the
Lakeshore Asylum Cemetery Project and PSAT.

Our congratulations to these winners; all are psychiatric survivors,
a major condition for eligibility.

These prizes are awarded in memory of the 1,511 people buried in the
Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital Cemetery, located at the northeast
corner of Horner Avenue and Evans Avenue in Etobicoke.

As stated in PSAT's Memorial Design Contest brochure, "The purpose of
this campaign is to create a permanent public marker to remember the
people buried here in a dignified and respectful way and to
acknowledge their contributions to our community. It is intended to
right a grievous historical wrong in which we as a community say to
the people buried here: 'You are forgotten no longer!'".
