NOTE: This sort of thing has been going on for decades, of course.
And they've been tremendously effective at it. The information needed
as a basis for a strong response to Climate Destabilization has been
available at least since '69 (I wish I still had the front-page
Berkeley [CA] Gazette story from that year)--but Big Oil has been able
to create so much confusion that so far there have been only a few
token responses. I think these bribes are circulating within the US
Peak Oil Movement too--but never get time to check it out. Peak Oil
bribes would allow Big Oil to play a double game: arrange for people to
be frightened into paying higher and higher prices at the pump, while
at the same time denying that there are imminent oil shortages. --

Scientists Offered Cash to Dispute Climate
Study
Ian Sample, science correspondent
Friday February 2, 2007
The Guardian
Scientists and economists have been offered $10,000 each by a lobby
group
funded by one of the world's largest oil companies to undermine a major
climate change report due to be published today.
Letters sent by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), an
ExxonMobil-funded thinktank with close links to the Bush administration,
offered the payments for articles that emphasise the shortcomings of a
report from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
Travel expenses and additional payments were also offered.
The UN report was written by international experts and is widely
regarded as
the most comprehensive review yet of climate change science. It will
underpin international negotiations on new emissions targets to succeed
the
Kyoto agreement, the first phase of which expires in 2012. World
governments
were given a draft last year and invited to comment.
The AEI has received more than $1.6m from ExxonMobil and more than 20
of its
staff have worked as consultants to the Bush administration. Lee
Raymond, a
former head of ExxonMobil, is the vice-chairman of AEI's board of
trustees.
The letters, sent to scientists in Britain, the US and elsewhere,
attack the
UN's panel as "resistant to reasonable criticism and dissent and prone
to
summary conclusions that are poorly supported by the analytical work"
and
ask for essays that "thoughtfully explore the limitations of climate
model
outputs".
Climate scientists described the move yesterday as an attempt to cast
doubt
over the "overwhelming scientific evidence" on global warming. "It's a
desperate attempt by an organisation who wants to distort science for
their
own political aims," said David Viner of the Climatic Research Unit at
the
University of East Anglia.
"The IPCC process is probably the most thorough and open review
undertaken
in any discipline. This undermines the confidence of the public in the
scientific community and the ability of governments to take on sound
scientific advice," he said.
The letters were sent by Kenneth Green, a visiting scholar at AEI, who
confirmed that the organisation had approached scientists, economists
and
policy analysts to write articles for an independent review that would
highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the IPCC report.
"Right now, the whole debate is polarised," he said. "One group says
that
anyone with any doubts whatsoever are deniers and the other group is
saying
that anyone who wants to take action is alarmist. We don't think that
approach has a lot of utility for intelligent policy."
One American scientist turned down the offer, citing fears that the
report
could easily be misused for political gain. "You wouldn't know if some
of
the other authors might say nothing's going to happen, that we should
ignore
it, or that it's not our fault," said Steve Schroeder, a professor at
Texas
A&M university.
The contents of the IPCC report have been an open secret since the Bush
administration posted its draft copy on the internet in April. It says
there
is a 90% chance that human activity is warming the planet, and that
global
average temperatures will rise by another 1.5 to 5.8C this century,
depending on emissions.
Lord Rees of Ludlow, the president of the Royal Society, Britain's most
prestigious scientific institute, said: "The IPCC is the world's leading
authority on climate change and its latest report will provide a
comprehensive picture of the latest scientific understanding on the
issue.
It is expected to stress, more convincingly than ever before, that our
planet is already warming due to human actions, and that 'business as
usual'
would lead to unacceptable risks, underscoring the urgent need for
concerted
international action to reduce the worst impacts of climate change.
However,
yet again, there will be a vocal minority with their own agendas who
will
try to suggest otherwise."
Ben Stewart of Greenpeace said: "The AEI is more than just a thinktank,
it
functions as the Bush administration's intellectual Cosa Nostra. They
are
White House surrogates in the last throes of their campaign of climate
change denial. They lost on the science; they lost on the moral case for
action. All they've got left is a suitcase full of cash."
On Monday, another Exxon-funded organisation based in Canada will
launch a
review in London which casts doubt on the IPCC report. Among its
authors are
Tad Murty, a former scientist who believes human activity makes no
contribution to global warming. Confirmed VIPs attending include Nigel
Lawson and David Bellamy, who believes there is no link between burning
fossil fuels and global warming.

Al Gore
Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize
By DOUG MELLGREN, Associated Press Writer Thu Feb 1, 6:29 AM ET
OSLO, Norway - Former Vice President Al Gore was nominated for the 2007
Nobel Peace Prize for his wide-reaching efforts to draw the world's
attention to the dangers of global warming, a Norwegian lawmaker said
Thursday.
"A prerequisite for winning the Nobel Peace Prize is making a
difference, and Al Gore has made a difference," Conservative Member of
Parliament Boerge Brende, a former minister of environment and then of
trade, told The Associated Press.
Brende said he joined political opponent Heidi Soerensen of the
Socialist Left Party to nominate Gore as well as Canadian Inuit
activist Sheila Watt-Cloutier before the nomination deadline expired
Thursday.
"Al Gore, like no other, has put climate change on the agenda. Gore
uses his position to get politicians to understand, while Sheila works
from the ground up," Brende said.
During eight years as Bill Clinton's vice president, Gore pushed for
climate measures, including for the Kyoto Treaty. Since leaving office
in 2001 he has campaigned worldwide, including with his Oscar-nominated
documentary on climate change called "An Inconvenient Truth."
Norwegian lawmakers are among the thousands of people and groups with
rights to nominate Nobel candidates. Others include members of national
governments, past laureates, members of the awards committee and its
staff, and many university professors.
The winner is traditionally announced in mid-October, with the prize
always presented on the Dec. 10 anniversary of the death of its
creator, Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel.

Russia Probes Smelly Orange
Snow
Russia has flown a team of chemical experts to a Siberian region to
find out why smelly, coloured snow has been falling over several towns.
Oily yellow and orange snowflakes fell over an area of more than
1,500sq km (570sq miles) in the Omsk region on Wednesday, Russian
officials said.
Chemical tests were under way to determine the cause, they said.
Residents have been advised not to use the snow for household tasks or
let animals graze on it.
"So far we cannot explain the snow, which is oily to the touch and has
a pronounced rotten smell," said Omsk environmental prosecutor Anton
German, quoted by the Russian news agency Itar-Tass on Thursday.
"We are waiting for the results of a thorough test on samples."
But Vladimir Gurzhey, an official with the civil defence ministry in
Omsk, told the Russia TV channel that the snow had four times the
normal levels of iron in it.
The TV also reported that coloured snow had fallen in the neighbouring
regions of Tomsk and Tyumen.
Omsk, in western Siberia, is a centre of Russia's oil industry. About
27,000 people live in the areas affected by the snow, Russian officials
said.

Cuban, Venezuelan Intel Say 9/11 Was an Inside Job
By Wayne Madsen
1-31-7http://www.rense.com/general75/tnie.htm
(WMR) -- Add Cuba and Venezuela to the list of countries that knew of
and informed the Bush administration about a "major terrorist attack"
prior to 911.
In addition to Russia, Jordan, France, Germany, and other nations,
Venezuelan and Cuban intelligence picked up chatter about a "major
terrorist attack" on the United States prior to 911.
Cuban intelligence, which has an extensive network in Florida -- a home
base of the hijackers and their handlers -- initially picked up reports
about the attack and passed the information to both the United States
and Venezuela. However, the Bush administration failed to react to this
and other foreign warnings.
Venezuelan intelligence, likely from its own sources in Florida and
elsewhere, confirmed that something major would occur in the United
States.
The failure of the Bush administration to heed these warnings coupled
with subsequent intelligence picked up by the Cuban and Venezuelan
security services have led them to conclude that 9-11 was carried out
as a result of an "inside job" within the Bush administration.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has announced plans to hold an
international 9-11 commission of inquiry in Caracas that will bring
together a host of international government, security, and political
leaders.
Already, preliminary meetings in Caracas for the conference have
attracted the attention of the FBI. Recently, an FBI agent asked for
the guest list of a hotel on Margarita island to check on names of
guests, including Americans, associated with the preliminary planning
meetings for the conference.

provides strong clues as to who was really behind the assassination.
This examination of the evidence is meticulous and well-documented.
JFK II is a criminal indictment of George Herbert Walker Bush and

Venezuela Claims Major Oil Stake
POSTED: 0331 GMT (1131 HKT), February 1, 2007
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- The Venezuelan government will take majority
control of oil projects in the Orinoco River basin by May 1 and any
foreign oil company that resists can leave, President Hugo Chavez said
Thursday as he elaborated on his sweeping nationalization plans.
Chavez told a news conference that his government is "not posing any
conflict" to oil companies British Petroleum, Exxon Mobil, Chevron,
ConocoPhillips, Total SA and Statoil ASA that are upgrading heavy oil
in the Orinoco.
Chavez, who a day earlier was given power by congress to issue laws by
decree in energy and other areas, said he was ready to sign a decree
for the nationalization of the four Orinoco projects by May 1. He said
that state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA, would take a stake of
"no less than 60 percent."
He also said that 3,000 Venezuelan employees in the Sincor project --
jointly owned by France's Total, Norway's Statoil and PDVSA -- would
become PDVSA employees.
"I'm sure that they're going to accept this because we are going to
continue being partners. Now, if they aren't in agreement, they are
totally free to leave," he said.
"What we want is to negotiate," he said. "We hope these companies
cooperate."
When private companies producing oil elsewhere in the country submitted
to state-controlled joint ventures last year, few resisted because they
were reluctant to abandon Venezuela, which has the largest oil deposits
outside of the Middle East.
But Chavez's increasing intervention in the economy has rattled more
risk-averse sectors and chilled investment among those who fear a
radical turn to his so-called socialist revolution. Critics say that as
he begins a fresh six-year term, Chavez is taking steps reminiscent of
how Fidel Castro monopolized leadership years ago in Cuba.
Chavez tried to quell those fears on Thursday.
"I ask you to see the truth. Don't let yourselves be terrorized. Be
free," he said, accusing some media outlets and governments of trying
to demonize his efforts. "Evaluate with objectivity and you'll see that
there is no reason on the horizon to feel any kind of fear."
"We are not going to copy the Soviet model nor the current model of
socialism in Europe nor the Cuban model. We are going to create our own
model," Chavez said.
Chavez has said he will use his special decree powers, which will be in
force for 18 months, to also nationalize the country's biggest
telecommunications company and the electricity and natural gas sectors.
On Thursday, he said the takeover will include Electricidad de Caracas,
which is controlled by U.S. electricity company AES, and four other
regional power companies that are privately run: ELEBOL in Bolivar
state, ELEVAL in the Valencia city, CALIFE in Puerto Cabello, and ELECA
on Margarita Island.
Re-nationalizing the sector will involve modifying existing electricity
sector laws, Chavez added without elaborating.
"It was a mistake to leave that sector in the hands of local and
foreign-owned private sector companies," Chavez said, referring to a
round of privatization in the sector in the 1990s.
But he said he had no plans to nationalize the entire economy.
"The nationalizations will always be limited to strategic areas of the
economy," he said. "So I call to national and international business
owners to come, let's work together for the development ... of a mixed
economic model."
Chavez referred again to plans to nationalize CA Nacional Telefonos de
Venezuela, or CANTV, but did not give further details. New York-based
Verizon Communications holds a 28.5 percent stake in CANTV, Spanish
telecommunications company Telefonica SA has 6.9 percent, and the
remainder is held by CANTV workers, the government and other investors.
Government officials have said that the nationalizations will be
carried out in line with the law, indicating shareholders will be
compensated, but have not said how much the state payout will be.
Chavez's government has sharply raised taxes and royalties on energy
companies, imposed increasing regulations on the banking sector, and is
pledging to strip the central bank of its autonomy.

Plans Student Strike Feb. 15 to Protest War
Students at University of California - Santa Barbara are planning for
a student strike in protest of the war on February 15 (the 4th
anniversary of the 2003 anti-war protests that brought out millions of
people around the world). In the face of Bush's escalation of the Iraq
war and threats of attacking Iran, the campuses have been all too
quiet. This student strike is exactly the kind of action needed if
this war and this regime is going to be stopped.
Campus Meetings about Driving OUT the Bush Regime are being held
tonight, February 1, in Arizona, New York, California, North Carolina,
Hawaii, Washington, Georgia, Illinois and Texas, planning for Teach-ins
and the World Cant Wait Speaking Tour, and possible spreading of the
student strike on February 15.
Saturday &
Sunday, February 17 & 18 New York City
A great synergy between the movement to end the war and the drive to
impeach Bush is needed now. Iraq spins out of control. Bush escalates
and threatens still wider war with Iran. The Bush program of torture
and illegal detentions continues. These are War Crimes and Crimes
Against Humanity.
Bush's full program remains in effect. NSA Spying, the Patriot Act,
the Military Commission Act; all continue. And, all are illegal. The
whole program of the Bush Administration must be thoroughly repudiated
by removing him from office before his term expires; otherwise, the
whole direction he has taken society will be condoned, legitimated, and
made permanent.
It is time to put impeachment back on the table. A movement to
Impeach Bush for War Crimes can quickly advance the whole struggle;
making ending the war and removing Bush a reality. As impeachment
becomes imminent and his war options grow more limited; the more his
war crimes are exposed, the greater the impetus for his removal and
repudiation.
On the weekend of February 17, activists, leaders, academics, writers
including Cindy Sheehan, John Nichols, Dennis Loo and more to come --
everyone who sees the need and opportunity to remove George Bush and
his regime from office for its crimes, and repudiate his program, will
gather in New York City to plan how to accomplish this in 2007.

Saddam Husseins
Last Words: "To the Hell That Is Iraq!"?
What the Media Has
Deliberately Concealed
By Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya
Global Research, January 31, 2007
"On the Holy day of Eid, the world watched in horror at the barbaric
lynching of President Saddam Hussein of Iraq, allegedly for crimes
against humanity. This public murder was sanctioned by the War
Criminals, President Bush and Prime Minister Blair.
The entire trial process was a mockery of justice, no less a Kangaroo
Court. Defence counsels were brutally murdered, witnesses threatened
and judges removed for being impartial and replaced by puppet judges.
Yet, we are told that Iraq was invaded to promote democracy, freedom
and justice."
(Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, former Prime Minister of Malaysia, 30
December 2006)
The barbaric lynching of Saddam Hussein, the former president of Iraq,
was a choreographed event, a carefully staged U.S. sponsored PSYOP,
with a view to triggering social divisions and fomenting sectarian
violence within Iraq and the broader Middle East.
In its coverage of the execution, the international media, in a highly
convoluted fashion, combined the transcript of Saddam Husseins
execution with recollections of so-called witness statements.
Moreover, the transcripts were often presented to readers without
context or explanation. More generally, the translations from the
Arabic were the object of manipulation and media distortion.
The execution of the Iraqi leader was carefully timed to occur during
a sensitive time for Muslims. The execution fell during Eid ul-Adha, a
holy day for Muslims. The date of the execution is perhaps one of the
most compromising signals that the execution was indeed a psychological
operation (PSYOP) launched by the United States.
The execution date was deliberately chosen during a sacred period for
Muslims to exploit a divide between Shiites and Sunni. This sacred day
was marked on Saturday, December 30, 2007 by Sunni Muslims in Iraq and
was observed a day later on Sunday, December 31, 2007 by Iraqs
Shiites.
This is a strategic difference in dates that the executing of Saddam
Hussein sought to expose and exploit to create sedition and division
between Iraqis and Muslims. The day of the execution was deliberately
chosen by its U.S. sponsors to occur on Saturday, December 30, 2006,
the day that Sunni Muslims observed Eid ul-Adha.
The execution took place on December 30, with a view to enraging Sunni
Muslims against Shiite Muslims. Concurrently, both the media and
offical U.S. statements pointed to the Shiites (and the "Shiite
government") as being responsible for the execution.
Aside form the religious context, the execution was also illegal under
the Iraqi legal code and constitution. This has been articulated by
Rizgar Mohammad Amin, an Iraqi Kurd and one of the former judges in the
questionable trial of Saddam Hussein.
The execution was carried out, as a psychological weapon, to usher in
sectarian violence and division throughout the Middle East. The timing
also coincided with several announcements and news reports of war plans
by the United States and Israel in regards to Syria and Iran.
It is no coincidence that shortly after the execution the U.S.
President identified Syria and Iran as the enemies of Iraq and raided
an Iranian Consulate in Iraqi Kurdistan.
The media disinformation campaign pertaining to the execution was
coordinated with the instruments of war propaganda emanating from the
Pentagon and U.S. intelligence.
In the immediate wake of the execution, the global networks of the
corporate media went into full gear to propagate the misinformation
that the Pentagon wanted to convey to the general public.
The translated transcripts of Saddam Husseins last words, which had
been scrupulously manipulated and distorted, were fed into the global
news chain.
Presented below is the Global Research translation from the Arabic
original audio-video believed to have been recorded on a cell phone.
Also presented for purposes of comparison are several other
"translations" from the same Arabic original.
Transcript: Our translation from the Arabic original

Note on the Original Video
The Global Research translation is based on an Arabic video. The
release of this video was in all likelihood part of the U.S. sponsored
intelligence operation. The video was allegedly taken from a cell phone
camera belonging to one of the executioners. Viewer discretion is
advised; the video is gruesome and upsetting in nature and does not
resemble a state-run execution. To view click here
Corporate Media Translations
Below are several transcripts of translations. Some of these
transcripts demonstrate a major deviation from the original (Arabic)
word by word dialogue. A look at the CNN or BBC versions of the video
clearly reveals a deliberate attempt to distort Saddam Husseins
statements and portray the Shiite Muslims of Iraq as those behind the
Iraqi leaders hanging in Baghdad.
The corporate medias translations add or interject what was reportedly
said by Saddam Hussein to what was recorded
Fox News
The Fox News transcript fails to even give a glimpse of Saddam
Husseins last words. It only gives an ominously detailed translation
of the start of the video. One should ask is there a reason why the
full transcript was not given and why this partial transcript was
portrayed as the transcript of the execution in its entirety.
Fox News Transcript
A new videotape surfaced Monday on the Web appearing to show the body
of former Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein after he was hanged on Dec.
30, 2006. This is the translation of the audio conversation on that
27-second video among individuals with access to the body and someone
apparently using a cell phone camera:

Hurry up! Hurry up!
Hurry up!

Just a moment, one moment
I am coming. I am coming.
Abu Ali, Abu Ali You take care of this.
Ok lets go, lets go
Come on my friend! Come on my friend!
Ok, I am coming. I am coming.
BBC Transcript
The BBCs transcript fails also to give a glimpse of Saddam Husseins
last words, besides painting the executioners as savage Shiites. Nor
does the BBC report acknowledge Washington's role in ordering this
execution.
Moreover, Saddam Husseins last words about Iraq being turned into a
living Hell are conveniently omitted. The BBC transcript also uses
phrases that portray the executioners as Shiites. This is done by the
chosen reference in the phrase referring to Prophet Mohammeds family
and the statement "And may God hasten their appearance and curse their
enemies," which is a reference to Imam Mahdi, a Muslim figure, that
Shiite Muslims place special emphasis on in regards to Sunni Muslims.
British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Transcript
Translation of Arabic subtitles accompanying the latest execution
footage as broadcast on al-Jazeera TV station:

[Saddam] There is no God but Allah and I testify that Muhammad is the
messenger of God. There is no God but Allah and I testify that

At this point the video stops and the sound of the trapdoors opening
is heard in the background.
The Independent (U.K.)
The Independent, a British daily, that gives a fairly progressive view
on international events seems to have also carried a version of the
translation of the transcript of the execution of Saddam Hussein that
has omitted Saddam Husseins last words indicating that Iraq has been
turned into a Hell on earth.

Analysis and Implications
Internationally and especially in the Arab World and the Middle East,
the barbaric lynching was casually presented as a Shiite Muslim
initiative, when in fact the Anglo-American occupation forces were in
control of every phase of this gruesome venture.
Ironically, the individuals and leaders who played a major role in
ordering the lynching of Saddam Hussein are now saying quite
emphatically that they were opposed to his execution. Prime Minister
Tony Blair is reported to have stated that "the manner in which former
Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was executed was completely wrong."
Meanwhile, the dictators and autocratic leaders of the Arab World have
also jumped aboard in expressing their opposition to Saddam Husseins
lynching.
Criticism expressed by the House of Saud in Saudi Arabia, the Hashemite
family in Jordan and President Mubarak of Egypt, amongst others,
constitutes an empty form of posturing geared towards raising their
popularity amongst their own citizens.
The Role of the Iraqi Puppet Government
In these various reports, there has been a deliberate and calculated
attempt to place the responsibility for the execution of Saddam Hussein
squarely on the shoulders of the so-called "Iraqi government," without
acknowledging that this government cannot act without the consent of
the United States. The Iraqi government, which is best described as a
U.S.-controlled puppet regime, is invariably portrayed in press reports
as a "Shiite Muslim government" or a "Shiite Muslim-dominated
government". This is also an integral part of the U.S. PSYOP designed
to break down solidarity between Shiite Muslims and Sunni Muslims
against the Anglo-American invaders and occupiers.
The present Iraqi "government" is an appendix of the U.S. Occupation
administration and gets it orders from Washington and London. It is
neither Shiite Muslim in character nor is it a real government. With
regards to its powerless composition, it is almost evenly divided
between Iraqi Kurds, Shiite Arabs, and Sunni (Sunnite) Arabs.
To expose the manufactured portrayal of power in Iraq, one should look
back at the composition of Iraqi government institutions during the era
of Saddam Hussein. Prior to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Shiite Arabs had
a greater representation than Sunni Arabs within the civilian
bureaucracy as well as within the security and military apparatus,
largely because of the demographic realities of Iraq.
But this fact has long been forgotten. Nothing has changed in regards
to the composition of the bureaucracy, administrative bodies, security
forces, and military apparatus of Iraq. Prior to the Anglo-American
invasion of Iraq, about 60% of the Iraqi military were Shiite Arabs.
This 60% fought against neighbouring Iran which is a predominantly
Shiite Muslim nation.
In reality, the real divisions in the Middle East are not based on on
around religious, sectarian, and ethnic considerations, but on those
nations and forces, which either oppose or support the Anglo-American
agenda in the Middle East.
The media focus on sectarian divisions is intended to divert the
attention of public opinion from the fact that the U.S. and its
Coalition partners are the root cause of anarchy and violence,
resulting in countless deaths and atrocities in Iraq.
Saddam Husseins Last Moments
In his last moments, the words of Saddam Hussein were very compelling.
When he was told to "go to Hell" by his executioners, the Iraqi leader
replied, "[You mean] to the hell that is Iraq!?"
Who turned Iraq into a living Hell? Who is to be blamed? These words
were so powerful that several major media outlets conveniently omitted
them from their translations, including the BBC and CNN. Any meaningful
revelation or coverage of the correct final statements of Saddam
Hussein could have severe and negative implications for the
Anglo-American military roadmap in the Middle East. "To the hell that
is Iraq!?" could become a powerful political slogan, serving to rally
public opinion throughout the Muslim World against America's imperial
ambitions.
The Iraqi leaders final words carry great weight because they describe
the situation created in Iraq under military occupation. This final
statement could also have political ramifications in the U.S. and
Britain, as public opinion becomes increasingly aware that these last
words, "the living Hell," describes what Iraq has been turned into,
under U.S. and British military occupation.
The late Saddam Husseins words could have strong implications for
rallying resistance in the Arab world against the US-UK occupation of
Iraq. In this regard, the Arab mainstream media has played a calculated
role in furthering the Anglo-American military agenda by shifting the
blame for Saddam Husseins execution onto the Shiite Iraqis.
Outside the Arab World, if allowed to be heard freely and
unadulterated, Saddam Husseins last words ("To the hell that is
Iraq!?"), which describe the realities of an occupied country, could
potentially backlash on the legitimacy of the US adminstration and its
indefectible British ally.
The mainstream sources, which reported his statement conveyed the
impression, through a highly distorted and convoluted analysis, that
Saddam Hussein was blaming the Shiite Arabs and the "Shiite dominated
Iraqi government" for destroying Iraq. But nothing could be further
from the truth. The evidence amply confirms that since the early days
of the occupation of Iraq the United States and Britain have not
only created a situation of insecurity, but have also been involved in
covert acts of violence, including random massacres and suicide attacks
directed against civilians.
This deliberate media portrayal of an emerging Shiite ascension in
Iraq and the Middle East is part of a multifaceted strategy geared
towards creating tensions within the predominately Muslim populations
of the Middle East. It is a typical divide and conquer strategy,
which is supported by the long tentacles of the intelligence apparatus
of the United States. The hidden agenda is to trigger "civil war" and
the redraw the map of the Middle East. The ultimate objective is the
domination of the Middle East by the United States, Britain and their
coalition partners, including Israel and proxy Arab leaders. The active
collaboration of the frontline Arab governments, which have military
cooperation agreements with NATO and the U.S., are also tied into this
agenda.
Divisions and animosity within their respective populations is what
has allowed these pro-U.S. Arab authoritarian figureheads, which
increasingly act as proxies, to remain in power.
Since the Anglo-American sponsored Israeli siege of Lebanon, the
coalition building phase of the military roadmap has been launch. The
United States has been constructing the Coalition of the Moderate,
which includes Israel, Saudi Arabia, Mahmoud Abbas, the Lebanese
government, Egypt, the U.A.E., Turkey, and Jordan. While this has been
going on there is a continuous attempt to build public consensus in
support of dividing Iraq and military strikes against Syria and Iran.
The media in North America, Europe, and the Arab World have played an
important role in demonizing the Syrians and the Iranians.
As the United States gears up for the next stage of the Middle East
war, the drive to divide the populations of the region now encompasses
a broad area extending from Lebanon and Palestine to the Persian Gulf.
The life of Saddam Hussein was used by the United States as firewood to
further fuel discord and division in Iraq and the Middle East before
the next phase of its military roadmap, which is directed against Iran
and Syria.

CHRISTIAN FASCISM: THE JESUS GESTAPO OF
ST. ORWELL
By Carolyn Baker
January 31, 2007
New York Times reporter, Chris Hedges, has written an extraordinary
book, American Fascism: The Christian Right And The War On America.
Having survived a Christian fundamentalist background myself, I marvel
at the timely urgency of Hedges book, but also, at the obtuse
disconnect most Americans have with the pivotal thesis of his book: the
power of the religious right in the United States to bring forth a
nation whose totalitarian repression could dwarf that of Nazi Germany
in the 1930s. As Hedges notes, we are well on the path toward such a
reality, and the Domionist Christian right is a principal player in the
process. While the nucleus of that movement is small, measuring only
about 1% of evangelicals and led by the likes of James Dobson, Pat
Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and John Hagee, those leaders are supported
by throngs of evangelicals sympathetic to their theocratic views who
dutifully preach the consummate tenet of the movement, submission.
Citizens must submit to their government officials, particularly the
ones who claim to be born-again Christians and receiving their orders
from God; wives must submit to husbands; children must submit to
parents; and everyone must submit to the teachings of the bible as
interpreted by evangelical Christianity or burn in hell. I will herein
use the term Christian fascism or Cristo-fascism as synonymous with
a worldview and political philosophy which are both fundamentalist
Christian and fascist in nature.
Recently, I viewed a chilling documentary Jesus Camp, which examines
the evangelical belief that a revival is underway in America that
requires Christian youth to assume leadership roles in advocating the
causes of their religious movement. [1]The film follows a group of
evangelical kids who attend a summer camp where they are taught to
become dedicated Christian soldiers in Gods army. Under the leadership
of control-freak youth pastor, Becky Fischer, who makes Nurse Ratchet
in One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest look like Snow White, the children
are told that theirs is a unique generationperhaps the last on earth
before the return of Christ to rapture his church, and that just as
Musilm children learn at an early age to carry and use automatic
weapons so that they can die for Islam, Christian kids must learn to
fight in the Jesus army in order to save souls and take back America
for Godand be willing to die for Jesus.
One not need be a licensed mental health professional to find the
emotional manipulation, indoctrination, and outright brainwashing of
the Jesus camp both repulsive and enraging. Its squeaky-clean, almost
exclusively white, puerile participants mouth all the right jargon,
concepts, and scripture verses impeccably and robotically like good
little Christian boys and girlsor more chillingly, like Hitler youth.
Jesus Camp is nothing less than childhood spiritual abuse on steroids,
leaving me personally and eternally grateful that as a child growing up
in fundamentalism, I wasnt subjected to anything worse in the context
of religious services than the raspy screams of bible-thumping
preachers
Hedges brilliant article, The Christian Right And The Rise Of
American Fascism outlines several principles inherent in Christian
fascism, and to his list, I will add a few of my own:
1) Apocalyptic ViolenceA central tenet of Cristo-fascism is the belief
that after the Rapture or Christs returns to rescue Christian
believers and take them to heaven, a period of seven years, or the
Tribulation, will ensue in which an Anti-Christ will dominate the
world, and every horror imaginable will be unleashed on humankind.
Those who do not submit (again a pivotal word for Christian fascism)
and accept Christ as their personal savior, will be martyred but will
be assured of spending eternity in heaven with Christ. Those who do
submit will be condemned eternally to hell. After the Tribulation
period, Christ will return again with the army of Christians in
heaven, and the battle of Armageddon will be fought against the
Anti-Christ and his armies. The latter will be slaughtered by Christ
and his followers who will set up Christs kingdom on earth where he
will reign for one thousand years, followed by the total and complete
destruction of earth as Christ and his followers return to heaven.
Sounds like a scene from the movie Independence Day? Actually, that
movie cannot begin to capture the heinous barbarity that Christian
fascism fantasizes will befall the earth and those who reject Christ.
That scenario is a bloodbath of unimaginable, avenging horrors. Note
that not only will non-Christian human beings be decimated, but so will
the earth itself, the outcome being twofold: Humans who do not submit
to Jesus will be destroyed, and the planet itself will be annihilated.
How delicious the vindication for the Cristo-fascist psyche! Not only
will people who reject their Jesus be grotesquely punished, but their
God will prove himself more powerful than the very planet on which they
live. Obviously, no need here to worry about global warmingat least
the kind created by humans. God will incinerate the earth--his own
instantaneous global warming, triumphing over all enemies of both
himself and the Christian fascists. As Hedges notes, these fantasies of
monstrous cruelty are appealing to many within the Christian-fascist
movement because The loss of manufacturing jobs, lack of affordable
health care, negligible opportunities for education and poor job
security has left many millions of Americans locked out. This ideology
is attractive because it offers them the hope of power and revenge. It
sanctifies their rage.[2] And if any group of people on earth is
enraged, it is the Cristo-fascists whose rancor is every bit as caustic
and virulent as that of any Islamist fundamentalist on a suicide
mission.
2) One reason Hedges labels these individuals fascist has not only to
do with their positioning themselves on the political right, but
specifically, their fanatical insistence on submission to theocratic
government. Had George Orwell been a born-again Christian, twenty-first
century Cristo-fascists would probably declare him a saint. (War is
holy, and killing is sacred.) Their preferred polity is biblical
totalitarianism in which the principles embraced by secular society are
perceived as untrue and antithetical to their God and his Word.
Unquestioning obedience to fundamentalist Christian theology and its
resultant theocracy are the cornerstones of Cristo-fascism in
twenty-first century America.
3) As a result, adherents are diametrically opposed to a secular world
view and the tenets of modern science. As I have commented in other
articles[3] in recent years, fundamentalist Christianity generally
distrusts, and often despises human reason. Millions of children in
America are being home-schooled, and 75% of them are children from
fundamentalist Christian homes.[4] Home-schooling can offer an
extraordinary alternative to attending public school, but for
fundamentalist Christians, it serves, among other things, to shield
their children not only from grappling with such issues as evolution
and global warming, but learning the scientific method itself and the
basic principles of critical thinking and logical analysis.
4) Cristo-fascism is overwhelmingly a white Anglo-American movement.
While one sees growing numbers of African Americans and Hispanics
joining their ranks, the movement remains predominantly white and
rabidly Islamophobic. Most outspoken on this issue is San Antonios
megachurch pastor, John Hagee, who perceives Islam as the new Satan
which must be destroyed by Israel and the United States.
5) While Christian fascism cannot give enough lip service to the
culture of life it is morbidly death-obsessed in its raging support
of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and capital punishment. The
popularity of the grisly, sado-masochistic The Passion Of The Christ
among fundamentalist Christians, as well as the Jesus Camps
indoctrination of children to be willing and proud to die for Jesus
further belie Cristo-fascisms death fetish.
6) A new Christian Gestapo is in the works as the Christian right is
working vehemently to take control of military chaplaincies and create
in Hedges words, Americas Holy Warriors. He points out that during
the last century communist and fascist movements each built
paramilitary forces that operated beyond the reach of the law. The
frightening popularity and proliferation of the private security firm,
Blackwater, founded by a mega-millionaire right-wing Christian, Erik
Prince, has not only become a giant mercenary force in Iraq, but was
heavily used in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Increasingly,
Cristo-fascists are becoming more blatant about their wish to force
conversion to Christ through the barrel of a gun. A typical image of
this concept, dripping with testosterone, may be viewed at the website
of Force Ministries.
Just this week, conservative theologian, Doug Giles, appeared on Fox
News arguing that Christian males should be tougher because Jesus
wasnt a bearded lady. Christians, he said, should stop raising nice
boys and raise warriors who can fight terrorism.
In answer to the question of what is to be done, I would assert as I
usually do: Knowledge is power. Fundamentalist Christianity is
inherently delusional. One cannot reason with its adherents nor
influence them with facts. What one can do is understand first of all
that the United States has become a fascist empire. If one takes
seriously Mussolinis definition of fascism, the corporate state,
then this nation was well on its way even before the ascendancy of the
Bush II administration and September 11, 2001.
Furthermore, it is time for those who consider themselves politically
progressive to stop tolerating Cristo-fascists. Certainly, these
individuals have every right to believe whatever they choose to
believe, but when one comprehends the inherently fascist nature of both
their religion and their politics, one must necessarily confront not
only their ghastly disregard for separation of church and state, but
their implacable commitment to engineering a fundamentalist Christian
theocracy in the United States.
The exponential growth of the Cristo-fascist movement in the past six
years is yet another symptom of empire and a somnambulant society in
the throes of collapse. Whether or not one embraces Christianity or any
religion, for that matter, it is instructive to engage in
reality-checking the actual teachings of Jesus in the New Testament,
and specifically, the gospels and other sacred writings which were
excluded from the bible in the fourth century for political and
socio-economic reasons in order to streamline Constantines
hierarchical, imperial, Christian regimethe worlds first but not
last, Christian theocracy. With that in mind, I highly recommend The
Jesus Mysteries, by Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy.

Saddam
Hussein's Last Words: "To the Hell That Is Iraq!"?
In its coverage of the execution, the international media, in a highly
convoluted fashion, combined the transcript of Saddam Hussein's
execution with "recollections" of so-called witness statements.
Moreover, the transcripts were often presented to readers without
context or explanation. More generally, the translations from the
Arabic were the object of manipulation and media distortion.
The execution of the Iraqi leader was carefully timed to occur during
a sensitive time for Muslims. The execution fell during Eid ul-Adha, a
holy day for Muslims. The date of the execution is perhaps one of the
most compromising signals that the execution was indeed a
psychological operation (PSYOP) launched by the United States.
The execution date was deliberately chosen during a sacred period for
Muslims to exploit a divide between Shiites and Sunni. This sacred day
was marked on Saturday, December 30, 2007 by Sunni Muslims in Iraq and
was observed a day later on Sunday, December 31, 2007 by Iraq's Shiites.
The translated transcripts of Saddam Hussein's last words, which had
been scrupulously manipulated and distorted, were fed into the global
news chain.
Presented below is the Global Research translation from the Arabic
original audio-video believed to have been recorded on a cell phone.
Also presented for purposes of comparison are several other
"translations" from the same Arabic original.
Transcript: Our translation from the Arabic original
[SNIPPED--But Available at the url below]
Note on the Original Video
The Global Research translation is based on an Arabic video. The
release of this video was in all likelihood part of the U.S. sponsored
intelligence operation. The video was allegedly taken from a cell
phone camera belonging to one of the executioners. Viewer discretion
is advised; the video is gruesome and upsetting in nature and does not
resemble a state-run execution. To view click here
Corporate Media Translations
Below are several transcripts of translations. Some of these
transcripts demonstrate a major deviation from the original (Arabic)
word by word dialogue. A look at the CNN or BBC versions of the video
clearly reveals a deliberate attempt to distort Saddam Hussein's
statements and portray the Shiite Muslims of Iraq as those behind the
Iraqi leaders hanging in Baghdad.
The corporate media's translations add or interject what was
reportedly said by Saddam Hussein to what was recorded
Fox News
The Fox News' transcript fails to even give a glimpse of Saddam
Hussein's last words.
(Inaudible) Abu Ali
Hurry up! Hurry up!
Hurry up!
(Inaudible)
Let's go my friendCome on man!
I'll fix it up for you.
I am coming. I am coming.
Just a moment, one moment
I am coming. I am coming.
Abu Ali, Abu Ali You take care of this.
Ok let's go, let's go
Come on my friend! Come on my friend!
Ok, I am coming. I am coming.
BBC Transcript
The BBC's transcript fails also to give a glimpse of Saddam Hussein's
last words, besides painting the executioners as savage Shiites. Nor
does the BBC report acknowledge Washington's role in ordering this
execution.
Moreover, Saddam Hussein's last words about Iraq being turned into a
living Hell are conveniently omitted. The BBC transcript also uses
phrases that portray the executioners as Shiites. This is done by the
chosen reference in the phrase referring to Prophet Mohammed's family
and the statement "And may God hasten their appearance and curse their
enemies," which is a reference to Imam Mahdi, a Muslim figure, that
Shiite Muslims' place special emphasis on in regards to Sunni Muslims.
British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Transcript
Translation of Arabic subtitles accompanying the latest execution
footage as broadcast on al-Jazeera TV station:
[Saddam] Oh God.
[Voices] May God's blessings be upon Muhammad and his household.
[Voices] And may God hasten their appearance and curse their enemies.
[Voices] Moqtada [Al-Sadr]...Moqtada...Moqtada.
[Saddam] Do you consider this bravery?
[Voice] Long live Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr.
[Voice] To hell.
[Voice] Please do not. The man is being executed. Please no, I beg
you to stop.
[Saddam] There is no God but Allah and I testify that Muhammad is the
messenger of God. There is no God but Allah and I testify that Muhammad...
At this point the video stops and the sound of the trapdoors opening
is heard in the background.
The Independent (U.K.)
The Independent, a British daily, that gives a fairly progressive view
on international events seems to have also carried a version of the
translation of the transcript of the execution of Saddam Hussein that
has omitted Saddam Hussein's last words indicating that Iraq has been
Saddam: "Oh God."
Voice: "To hell."
