Aloha Allies, Earthlings, Mediateurs!

Today Hawai'i's most revered national holiday is being celebrated in an
historic fashion, as the Halau Hula Na Mamo O Pu'uanahulu with Kumu Hula
Sonny Ching are at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda in Washington D.C. in full
traditional Hawaiian regalia, doing a lei-draping ceremony on the statue of
King Kamehameha I there. Considering the beauty and power of their Hula
performances, with their extensive foundation on ancient Pele chants, I know
they are causing some emotional eruptions in the heart of the American
nation!

Tomorrow, June 12, as well as being a Hawaiian National holiday is also a
State holiday here, which I believe makes it the only holiday celebrating a
monarch (Kamehameha I) in the borders of U.S. occupation. Great parades,
festivals, lei-drapings, and royal installations happening all weekend, on
all the islands.

Hawai'i is definitely rising to the top of the American "agenda" with the
uprising in Fiji, Sonny Ching's Halau performing at Carnegie Hall, the media
on the mainland finally waking up to the historic injustices and the Apology
Bill. We've compiled some recent and upcoming events for your access....Look
for the Hawaiian "Ti" Party to be held next month in Boston Harbor!

Walking in the Footsteps of Kamehameha 2000
*************************************

Kamehameha Day is a time of celebration. On June 11th we remember the
brave warrior who won fame in battle -- and a lasting place in
history and the hearts of all people by governing in peace.

We invite all the people of Hawai'i to join us and participate in
this march and rally on Sunday, June 11 to honor Kamehameha's legacy
of unification. It is a time for us to unite -- and to gather as one
family.

By "Walking in the Footsteps of Kamehameha," we affirm the strength
and unity of Native Hawaiians and those who support Native Hawaiians.
We also recognize and rely on the role we each have in securing a
better future for Hawai'i.

As Native Hawaiians work to fulfill a trust relationship with the
United States or to explore independence, our act of
self-determination is simply an exercise of rights and freedoms
protected by the United States Constitution, the Law of Nations, and
the United Nations Charter.

By supporting Native Hawaiians in their efforts to freely make
choices about political standing and recognition, we act only to
defend and assure our own rights within a democratic society.

"Walking in the footsteps of Kamehameha" -- we march together toward
a more just and free future for all of Hawai'i Nei.

Native Hawaiians to stage Boston `Ti' Party
*********************************
By Associated Press, 6/6/2000 20:06 HONOLULU

(AP) Native Hawaiian activists will head to the birthplace of the American
Revolution this summer to draw attention to their own quest for political
sovereignty. The activists will cast leis made from Hawaiian ti leaves into
the waters of Boston Harbor on July 4.

In December 1773, American colonists dumped 342 chests of tea into the
harbor from a British ship, an event that became known as the Boston Tea
Party.

''America's founders risked their lives for freedom and political
self-determination,'' organizer John Kekahu said. ''Are Native Hawaiians
wrong to do the same thing?''

Hawaii's monarchy was overthrown by an American-led group of businessmen in
1893, and many Hawaiians say they should have their own government, either
as a restored monarchy, an independent nation or a ''state-within-a-state''
system.

Kekahu also is one of the organizers of the Aloha March 2000, set for Aug.
11-12 in Washington, D.C. He hopes to gather 20,000 people for the march
along Pennsylvania Avenue from the U.S. Capitol to the White House. Kekahu
led a group of about 200 in a similar march in August 1998.

Plan now to retrace Lili`uokalani's journey!
Join us August 11-12 in Washington, D.C.

ALOHA MARCH 2000
*******************

It is with ALOHA that we are committed:

To educate Americans on the continued plight of Native Hawaiians.

To demonstrate to America and all the world a solidarity among Native
Hawaiians for self-determination.

To showcase to America and all the world that there are significant numbers
of non-native Hawaiians that support this process.

To bring to bear on the U.S. federal government an unmistakable awareness
that the reconciliation process must now begin, and that this process must
properly take place with the U.S. federal government and not the Hawai`i
state government.

Thank You for your support for the revival of Hawaii as a Free, Sovereign
and Independent nation.

Congress will not recognize Hawaii as a Free, Sovereign and Independent
nation. Equal to the United States and all other free nations of the world.

Presently there is a move to have Congress recognized Native Hawaiians as
Tribal Nations simular to Native Americans. This is an unlawful move by the
federal agents who don't want to see Hawaii be free.

Congress is prohibited from recognizing indigineous people outside of the
continental United States as Tribal Nations. Native Hawaiians like Native
Americans are indigineous people. But unlike Native Americans, Native
Hawaiians are indigineous of the Hawaiian Islands and not the continental
United States.

The overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii was unlawful, so was the annexation
of Hawaii as an American territory. So was making Hawaii the 50th State also
unlawful. Now the federal government want to unlawfully have Native
Hawaiians recognized as Native Americans!

The continental United States is the ancestral homeland of Native American.
No one can deny that. Just as Hawaii is the ancestral homeland of Native
Hawaiians. Hawaii is just a few square miles larger then the city and county
of Los Angeles.

There is no place in this wide world that Native Hawaiians can call home.

For the past few weeks our World History class has been studying the
overthrow and annexation of Hawaii. We have researched Hawaii's cultural and
political past. It has been very informative and educational.

After studying Hawaii's overthrow, we have come to the conclusion that
Hawaii should become an independent country. The United States' influence
has changed Hawaii's culture and changed their economy. The people of Hawaii
were capable of fending for themselves before they became a state.

For example, they had communal farming that provided for the whole
community. They had an economy that provided for itself. Now Hawaii's
economy is dependent on the U.S. But they do have the resources to build
their own economy again.

There are many other reasons Hawaii should be given its sovereignty.
Hawaiians have their own culture, beliefs, and even their own language.
Hawaii was a nation. The United States illegally overthrew that nation and
annexed it as a state. This action was forbidden by international law.

The most important fact we have to point out is that the U. S. has confessed
their wrongdoings. They have apologized to Hawaii and admitted their actions
were wrong and illegal. This acknowledgment was made in the "Apology
Resolution" in 1993. The U.S. should recognize the "Apology Resolution" and
continue to reverse their wrongdoings. The only fair thing left to do is
give Hawaii back their independence.

June 6, 2000
To Whom It May Concern:

The conclusions drawn through our extensive study of the period of US
Imperialism lead us to believe our nation went too far when it overthrew the
Kingdom of Hawaii.

We robbed 400,000 peaceful, organized, and self-sufficient people of their
land and culture. Realizing that we can never right the wrong committed by
the US government, we were pleased that our government at least apologized
to the native Hawaiians for our behavior.

We believe it is time to give back to the Hawaiian people what is due them,
mainly their land. We should return the state of Hawaii to them so they can
decide their future, their culture and regain their dignity and pride.

Sincerely,
Kathy Welch and Jennifer Eisinger

I agree that the state of Hawai'i should be a sovereign nation. The Kingdom
of Hawai'i was illegally taken over by a United States minister named John
L. Stevens and therefore should have a choice of sovereignty. Queen
Liliuokalani was forced into ceding control of the nation to the United
States.

The United States has done all but destroy the Kanaka Maoli culture that has
been present on the island long before the Europeans ever discovered the
island. Yes, the United States may have helped the economy of the island a
bit, but I am sure that the Hawai'ian economy was fine and dandy and would
have lasted for a long time to come.

Sure, we all eat Dole pineapple and travel to Hawai'i for summer vacation,
but could we still do this if Hawai'i becomes a sovereign nation? I think
the answer to that is a resounding yes, but Hawai'i would have the freedom
to make their own laws and conditions with the United States. Hawai'i would
be able to restore the old government and bring back the cultures that it
had before the United States attempted to "civilize" the islands.

It has come to my attention that in the illegal "plebiscite" vote for the
admittance of Hawai'i into the union there was no option of independence,
that is required by international law. This is just another law that the
United States broke in its acquisition of Hawai'i as a state, and due to
these broken laws the state of Hawai'i should have every right to break off
from the United States and form it's own independent nation. Unfortunately
many wealthy United States businessmen that call Hawai'i their base of
operations.

Hawai'i should be free, it will just take time.

Sincerely, Matthew Laster

Before the overthrow, Hawaii was considered an independent country. They had
their own government, religion, written language, and culture. Why now make
them forget about everything they were and force them to become something
that the United States wants them to be? The United States should let Hawaii
become its own country once again so that the natives can salvage what's
left of their original culture they have left. But there is way that Hawaii
will become free without the United States even having to lift a finger. If
Hawaii votes to become its own nation, then the United States will just have
to accept that and left them because of international law. In conclusion, it
was wrong for the United States to allow the provisional government to be
established. They had no right to claim the land and people of an
independent country.

The United States government should do the right thing and allow Hawaii to
become independent again. And if Hawaii has changed so much that they can
not continue without the United States, then the United States can go
through a legal process to reinstate Hawaii into the United States, or they
can make it a commonwealth. No matter what, the United States government
needs to realize that Hawaii never legally belonged to them and set them
free.

Thank you for your time,
Amanda Jean Guyett, sophomore student
at Amador High School, Sutter Creek, CA.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

"The lawful Government of Hawaii was overthrown without the drawing of a
sword or the firing of a shot by a process every step of which, it may
safely be asserted, is directly traceable to and dependent for its success
upon the agency of the United States acting through its diplomatic and naval
representatives.

But the notorious predelictions of the United States Minister for
annexation, the Committee of Safety, which should be called the Committee of
Annexation, would never have existed.

But for the landing of the United States forces upon false pretexts
respecting the danger to life and property the committee would never have
exposed themselves to the pains and penalties of treason by undertaking the
subversion of the Queen's Government.

But for the presence of the United States forces in the immediate vicinity
and in position to afford all needed protection and support, the committee
would not have proclaimed the provisional government from the steps of the
Government building.

And finally, but for the lawless occupation of Honolulu under false
pretexts by the United States forces, and but for Minister Steven's
recognition of the provisional government when the United States forces were
its sole support and constituted its only military strength, the Queen and
her government would never have yielded to the provisional government, even
for a time and for the sole purpose of submitting her case to the
enlightened justice of the United States."

President Grover Cleveland "A Message to Congress" December 18, 1893

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"The central conflict between indigenous Hawaiians and the military is
over the control of land, an issue which is intrinsically tied to the
question of sovereignty and cultural survival. The military expropriated and
occupied the richest and most strategic locations, including important
religious sites, fishing, farming, hunting, and gathering areas.

As a result, Hawai'i is one of the most densely militarized regions under
U.S. control, with the military controlling 205,925 acres, or roughly 5% of
the land. On O'ahu, the most densely populated island, the military controls
85,718 acres out of 382,148 acres, or 22.4% of all the land. Statewide, the
combined armed services have 21 installations, 26 housing complexes, 8
training areas, and 19 miscellaneous bases and operating stations.

The largest percentage of the military's land holdings are made up of
so-called "ceded lands." In 1898, nearly 1.8 million acres of former
national and crown lands of the Kingdom of Hawai'i were illegally taken by
the United States. In 1959, when Hawai'i was admitted as a state, the
military retained control of approximately 180,000 acres of ceded lands,
while the rest reverted to the state. The law required surplus lands to be
returned to the state after World War II, but with the exception of
Kaho'olawe and Barber's Point, very little has actually been returned.
Today, the military controls approximately 112,173 acres of ceded land,
representing 54% of its land holdings."

"Modern Hawai'i, like its colonial overlord, the United States of
America, is a settler society. Our Hawaiian people, now but a remnant of the
nearly one million Natives present at contact with the West in the 18th
century, live at the margins of our island society. Less than 20% of the
current population in Hawai'i, our Native people have suffered all the
familiar horrors of contact: massive depopulation, landlessness,
christianization, economic and political marginalization,
institutionalization in the military and the prisons, poor health and
educational profiles, increasing diaspora.

When the United States military invaded our archipelago in 1893 and
overthrew our constitutional monarchy, our fate as an outpost of the
American empire was sealed. Entering the U.S. as a Territory in 1900, our
country became a white planter outpost, providing missionary-descended sugar
barons in the islands and imperialistic Americans on the continent with a
military watering hole in the Pacific."

The following Proclamation was composed by President Cleveland,
in disgust over the corrupt activities of the Americans in Hawai'i :::

To My People:

Whereas, my good and great sister and fellow sovereign, her gracious
majesty, Liliuokalani, queen of Hawai'i, has been wickedly and unlawfully
dethroned by the machinations of Americans and persons of American descent
in those islands, being instigated thereto by the devil, one John L.
Stevens; and whereas, my well-concieved plans for the restoration of her
sacred majesty
have not had the result they deserved but her majesty is still defrauded of
her legal rights by her refractory and rebellious subjects, and her position
is a just cause of sympathy and alarm; now, therefore, I, Grover Cleveland,
President of the United States, do hereby ordain and appoint the last day
of April next as a day of solemn fasting, humiliation and prayer.

Let my people humble themselves and repent for their injustice to me
and my great and good sister, and pray, without distinction of color, for
her speedy return to the throne and the discomfiture of the miserable
herd of missionaries and their sons, her enemies and traducers.

Long Live Liliuokalani, the de jure queen of Hawaii

The Story of America's Annexation of the Nation of Hawaii

http://www.hawaii-nation.org/hawaii-nation.html/books/index.html
by Tom Coffman
Paperback - 345 pages (November 1998)
Reviews

Burl Burlingame, author and historian
"Astronomers peer into the daunting depths of space, attempting to find
black holes ... historians like Tom Coffman are looking backward, only a
century, and see a black hole blanking out the events of 1898."

A.A. Smyser, Contributing Editor, Honolulu Star-Bulletin
"... moves to center stage an American well-known for many other things, but
seldom connected with Hawaiian history -- Theodore Roosevelt ..."

Herb Kawainui Kane, artist/historian
"Tom Coffman has gone on a far-reaching treasure hunt for long-buried facts,
revealing for the first time the full array of events and shifting
international forces that led to the overthrow and annexation of the Kingdom
of Hawaii ... not to be missed ... "

Chuck Freedman, Honolulu Advertiser
"The book answers big questions. Were the overthrow and annexation isolated
events, idiosyncratic to an island nation? Or were the events an outgrowth
of American manifest destiny? What were the international implications? Who
were the key players, here, and in Washington? What drove them and what were
the interrelationships?"

A CALL FOR HAWAIIAN SOVEREIGNTY
***********************************
by Michael Dudley and Keoni Agard

This is part two of a set of books that are quite remarkable. Many people
are not aware that Hawaii is a "stolen nation." It has been stolen not once,
but twice. The British took the islands by force in 1843, but the British
Crown restored the Hawaiian Kingdom almost immediately. Then, in 1893, the
United States also took the Kingdom by force. But this time, it was not
returned. This event is known in Hawaii as simply, "The Overthrow."

This well-written book explains what happened, gives the text of President
Cleveland's message to Congress recommending the restoration of the Kingdom,
discusses the fate of Hawaii and Hawaiians under non-Hawaiian rule and
explains the current sovereignty movement and what possible forms
sovereignty could take.
An excellent book.
