H2 VIABILITY

How can we justify switching to a Hydrogen fuel
economy at this point in history?
Eighty percent of the planet isn't switching it is
just beginning to develop, they are starting with their
governments.

If we look out the window at all the man made smog
and petro chemical pollution it doesn't take a rocket
scientist to figure out that we just did the wrong thing
to start with.
When we begin to add the inefficiency of the present
system of energy it becomes apparent.

The human cost :
We pay four times for the fuel to do the four basic
jobs that one properly placed fuel deployment could
accomplish. This means four times the needed personal work
effort goes to the inefficiency. We have to suffer the
disease of the pollution and the knowing that there is a
better way.

The environment:
Fossil fuel, biomass and other carbon fuels cause
massive emissions of greenhouse gasses ,acid rain and
snow, acquisition and transportation pollution, and
permantly degrades enormous tracts of land.(The land used
for mining coal and uranium, peat,hillsides stripped of
trees causing floods and human displacement, oil fields
and leases occupying potential living land and degrading
offshore waters, and the enormous tracts of land needed to
store and transport all this lethal product.)

From chaos to order: In retrospect and for the future,
the lowest common denominator of impact will have to be
realized if the planet is going to double it's population
in a decade or so and provide a decent standard of living
for those who don't have it yet. The way of doing things
will have to change. The prime part of the economy is
providing the necessities of life. Energy powers our
standard of living and holds the possibilities for others
to achieve equality. Fairness should become synonymous
with the logistics of need.
A global code of awareness where waste and pollution
consciousness go hand and hand with human need and planet
well being, a pecking order of impact., energy politeness, a
KISS tech building code.

Efficient shelter would be constructed to use the
least amt. of energy possible. Save heat and cool from one
season to the other.(Passive annual heat storage is easier
in new construction than retrofit).)Options land
permitting: A greenhouse, is a thermal collector and a
place to grow.Photo voltaics for direct use and charging
batteries, Concentrator collectors that produce hot water
steam and process heat for immediate use and storage PAHS
and the generating of electricity for grid, charging
batteries and the production of hydrogen for grid and
storage.(This is for unobstructed sunny areas of
reasonably sustained insolation, also can be deployed in a
regional scheme.) Flatplate solar collector for hot water
and process heat.
Wind and micro-hydro for pumping, electricity for charging
batteries and the production of hydrogen, air pressure and
direct drive.(for home-workplace, also can be regional)
Next combustion which we are the most familiar with
because of it's history. After passive and active solar
possibilities and conservation are considered the next
degree of impact where practical but still relatively non
polluting are: Digesters onsite using anything from home
waste to manures for methane which can be used as a fairly
cleanburning fuel. Biomass when used properly is relatively
clean burning and can be farmed. (the CO2 produced would
be released by decay and termite breath ,perhaps not quite
so fast )It is negative if it's harvest causes erosion and
ecological damage

When the density doesn't permit, as in cities, or the
retrofit too costly, the surrogate supplied
importables become tolerable in descending degrees. The
ultimate importable is Hydrogen. It has the lowest
environmental impact of any combustible energy source in
production (using only renewables) or use, and gives back its natural
resource as usable water. IT is an ideal storage medium for
renewables because it takes maximum advantage of off peak
use and does not lose energy in storage or transport
making it the ultimate end use cogeneration medium.
Landfill methane and community biogas is clean
burning and ads little net CO2 or trace gas gain because
it is a resource usually wasted.( the gasses escape
anyway)This saves the dual pollution of burning less
desirable fuels and the waste. The rest is the downward
spiral of least desirable fuels because they are positive
polluters.(new pollution from the unnecessary and sudden
release of stored carbon ) Natural gas and propane is
clean burning but produces the whole spectrum of exhaust
gasses but by far the best. The system of delivery is in
place and available almost everywhere even in rural
areas. In the U.S. the system has been repiped with new
plastic liners and new infrastructure is as easy as
burying a hose. This is the new Hydrogen and multy gas
grid delivery system!

Coal and oil are totally unacceptable for almost every
reason.
The use of fossil fuel generated electricity is the
worst of all evils because of the tremendous waste of the
largest portion of the heat and the pollution factor. When
the end use is to be space heat, hot water or process heat
and cooling, the environmental and fuel efficiency impact
is at it's worst.
With engineered industrial, home, and transportation synergy
in place with conservation and on
site renewables in the mix 80% of the surrogate transported energy
used to sustain our standard of living as a civilization
can be eliminated. With this in mind a Hydrogen economy
using renewables to produce it becomes feasible.2000
miles, area the size of a fraction of L.A county twice the size of RI.,
of 60%
efficient multi function concentrator collector fractionating water could
produce
enough Hydrogen to put a dent in our country's needs. Add
wind, bio, hydro, tide, geothermal and spread it all
around, the land area in any given region is only lightly
impacted and hardly ever ruined as in fossil fuel
extraction transport and storage. This gives hope to
sharing an advanced high quality standard of living with
the rest of the planet's population and making available
some of the capital to do it.
