TWO HOMES DEMOLISHED IN HEBRON

4 February 1999

This morning two more homes were demolished in Hebron by the Israeli
authorities on the grounds that the houses had been built without a
permit.

At 7:00 am, officials representing the Israeli Civil Administration,
the Committee for the Supervision of Real Estate and the Israeli
Higher Planning Council arrived with heavy equipment without prior
notification in Hebron's residential area Baq. They were escorted by a
large number of soldiers from Bet El settlement. The demolition was
carried out by Israeli soldiers under the supervision of Captain Shai,
commander of the Civil Administration. The bulldozers proceeded to
knock down the house of Fayez Jaber, aged 22. The house consisted of
two rooms, spanned 80 square metres and sheltered 12 members of his
family.

In a statement to LAW, Jaber said that the soldiers had used excessive
force to evacuate the house and that Fadi Jaber, aged 18, was beaten
and humiliated, for no apparent reason.

A few hours later, the same troops proceeded to demolish a second
house in Beit Ummar, a village north of Hebron. The demolition of the
house was again carried out without prior notification. The house,
which was owned by Laila Asabarna (30), consisted of two rooms,
spanned 100 square metres and sheltered 6 members of her family.

LAW is concerned at the ongoing house demolitions in violation of
international humanitarian and human rights law and calls on the
international community to force Israel to comply with international
law and to stop demolishing Palestinian homes.
