Why Miquelrius

purchasing notebooks. I have recently settled on the new Miquelrius
notebooks with the strap. I use an A6 size with 100 pages for a brain
dump, and an A5 size with 200 pages for a more thought out journal.
So why? Well memory seems to be a problem, be it from technology or
weak genes isn't really important. I have tried a few notebooks for
brain dumping in the past and could never really find one that I liked.
I tried the Miquelrius A5 with 200 pages and strapless, but it was too
fat and had problems pulling open. I tried a Rhodia notebook, but had
the same problem of keeping it closed, and the perforated pages tended
to cause the pages to come loose. I tried the Moleskine. The
Moleskine needs further explanation, because it was a strong contender
but just didn't failed in a few places that the new Miquelrius don't,
despite the fact that the Moleskine does have some features I wish the
Miquelrius would have. What I like about the Moleskine and want in my
Miquelrius: main thing is the back pocket, this is great; second is
the page ribbon; and final is the clean design of the strap, the
Miquelrius uses grommets to hold the strap and just doesn't look as
good. Now what the Moleskine fails on compared to the Miquelrius and
caused me to leave it. First and I think most importantly, the paper
color; I really like the bright white color of the Miquelrius, the
contrast is much better than the yellow of the Moleskine. The other
thing I don't like about the Moleskine, and I might be alone, is the
hard cover. I carry the notebooks in my pockets and I find the
hardcover hurts while the soft cover gives, but the rubber type cover
seems to protect very well. The final breaking point for me is the
size, I had a hard time writing in the pocket Moleskine and the
Miquelrius A6 is a little bigger. I also like the fact that Miquelrius
has more options as far as number of pages.

without the strap. I count 400 pages in the little ones... they are
extremely fat. They've got gridded pages, and they feel really good,
kind of like a nice bible does. However, they're *so* thick that I
haven't committed any writing to them. It's quite a commitment,
especially with the two big ones. They will take forever to fill up.
Like you, I carry my notebooks in my back pocket. I agree that the
Moleskine is too stiff, but I'm trying something new with the one I
just started... when I see it starting to bend a bit, I flip it around
a different way the next time I put it away. I've filled one pocket
reporter, and its binding suffered in the pocket. I'm currently using a
pocket plain - so far so good. I think back pocket curvature is
actually harder on the short edge of the book, so this might hold up
better.
The Kali Bags site says they're going to have the Miquelrius pocket
flexible notebooks in a couple of weeks, so I was planning to order
some. You say the 200 pages is too thick? The pocket Moleskine is only
192... I would think that with as soft cover the 200 would be perfect
for the back pocket. The 100 page one would be almost like carrying a
Cahier.
Another notebook you might consider is the Rü Journal from Xonex. It
has a flexible cover as well, the elastic closing strap, *and* the
accordion pocket. I found that the elastic got a little hinky as the
book acquired curvature, and the spine started breaking, but I never
tried the rotation trick on it. It's A6 size like the Miquelrius you
mentioned. I forget the page count... 96 if I'm not mistaken - might be
just right for you.
For the moment I still like the Moleskine best, but I'm looking forward
to trying a Miquelrius, especially if it returns to flat after being
bent in a pocket for a while.

pages than a Moleskine, but a little thinner because of the soft cover.

you get similar features plus a pocket (and no grommets on the
elastic). Downside is the paper is cream colored, and you prefer white,
but it's a little thicker than Moleskine and it takes ink beautifully.

You will have to report on the Ru's journals, I had really thought
about those.

had hoped they would. I'm writing in one of the big, fat Miquelrius
flexible notebooks right now, and I really like the way that they feel
- I'm hoping the little ones will stand up to back pocket pressures.
Alas, the ones I ordered from Kali have not arrived yet. I still have
half of this Moleskine pocket plain to fill before I switch notebooks,
but it's falling apart pretty fast. I have some linen tape on order
from Blick that might get it to last a while longer, but I'm afraid I'm
just too rough on Moleskines. Too bad. I've gathered up rather a large
collection of them.

actually. I guess the ones I have already are the "leather like"
notebooks. Very fat, gridded paper, and the pages are all glued into
the rounded spine - they won't lay flat.
These are a bit smaller than I thought they would be, more like a Rü
overall than anything else, although the cover is more rubbery than the
Rü's or the "leather like" notebooks. Perhaps since they are a little
smaller they won't get bent as much as a Rü or a Moleskine (more room
to escape to flatter parts of the pocket). The paper is a bit rougher
than Moleskine or my other Miquelrius books. 64 sheets/128 pages, with
a nice accordion pocket in the back, and no grommets.
I'll have to plant one in my pocket and see what happens. Could be the
perfect thing.

it with me all the time and it is holding up great. I did buy some
number stamps and used that to number the pages, makes the page numbers
stand out.
