"you only live twice, once when you are born, and once when you look death in the face."- taken from the ian flemming book, whic i belive the knowledge stems from japanese bushido or something.

Right, life is an endless death. But is has no face. This reborn thing of ex-alcoholics and ex-criminals is a too two-faced narrowing down of the real scope. What was Twain's context?

He wrote a lot of bitter social criticism of society and humanity
which only increased with his age.

Life is not an endless death, Gabby, though religion, politics, medicine and advertising may cloud the difference.

Oh, that's right! We'll die in the end. What I meant was the many little deaths before. Whatever you count as deaths or are being taught to count as deaths. Which is why I asked for Twain's personal context. - I'll see for myself if I can quickly find something, thanks.

There's a big difference between disappointments and death though
Liberalism and other policies/agencies have created a new class/caste
system which some have claimed is manipulated eugenics=guaranteed
losers and winners. Education should give one coping skills in a
variety of areas but that counts for little if you live in a war zone-
then it's survival of the fittest or last standing idiot.

oddly Rigsy  you want to blame liberalism,,  what I see is the major problems of today like the severe recessions that are occurring today are all the result of Conservative policies..  not liberalism as you so readily claim..

Whereas I tend to see more the similarity between feeling disillusioned and existential fear. Politics in education. Politics has not only failed in regulating the banking system.

Hi Gabs - there's an explanation here -
http://humorinamerica.wordpress.com/2012/10/02/if-i-hear-it-again-i-swear-ill-scream-hemingway-huck-finn-and-cheating/

Life is hard and then you die. Personally I shall be drinking the tea
of dignity. Don't tell the others. They aren't the kind to know
Nietzsche was 20 years too late in discovering the grave of god and
Hegel had already made off with the body. I once never asked whether
all Protestant girls vote green too.

Now, now - even Nietzsche didn't have Zarathustra tell the holy man
god was dead. I suppose I might have lit a fire using some bits of
the trees surrounding him, not mentioned global warming.and cooked him
a little breakfast.
