Hi everyone, (Sorry for the wall of text!)

I thought some of you might be interested in making these soldered night lights. It's a great intro class on the foil method used in stained glass but much simpler and easier as we're not connecting glass pieces together. If you've never used a soldering iron for crafting, this class is for you!  Come anytime during the night but expect an hour to an hour and a half to make one. The night lights are 3"x3". Materials, including night light hardware, included. You'll have time to make more if desire.

Date: Thursday, May 23rd, 2013 7pm - 11pm

Cost: $20 for members, $25 for non-members.

Includes: Instruction, all materials, and use of all tools. Additional night lights can be made for $12, must be made same night only as I can't send the tools home with you.

15% donated back to MM.  I have a square register so cc's welcome.

Please RSVP by May 9th on this thread so I can gauge interest and order supplies.

I'll have some decorative papers, magazines, maps, dictionaries, etc but if you really want a certain image, you should bring your own. The silhouette part of the project is also up to you as well. I'll bring in some generic ones you can use but you can make up your own or we have a computer you can look things up on. Just make sure it's no bigger than 3"x3" square.  Actually, it should be a bit smaller as there is a border as well you'll want to fit your silhouette inside.

Awesome!  Just make sure to size it smaller than 3x3 when you bring it in. And don't get too intricate or you will pull your hair out laying down the solder.

For this sort of soldering the workshop itself should provide enough practice.  It is not overly difficult just some patience required.

Alexa, Kevin is correct in that you don't need previous experience or practice to make the night light.  The only thing you need is a somewhat steady hand but even then, this is not a precision piece at all. You want things to be textured so that your soldered image is a bit dimensional.

As to your first question, you can come even though you aren't a member! I'll have you fill out a guest waiver when you come.

I can take up to 10 people though there will be some sharing of tools.  So far I have:

1. Shane
2. Vishal
3. Colleen
4. Alexa
5. Jacob
6. Joe B.
7.
8.
9.
10.
Lexie and Lance were thinking of coming but not 100% yet.

If anyone needs to back out, no problem, just let me know here on the boards.  If anyone wants to make the glass portion of the nightlight with no nightlight bits, that's totally fine as well - makes for a nice window hanging.

Friendly reminder that the soldered silhouette night light workshop is this Thursday starting at 7pm.

I highly encourage you to bring your own silhouette images (the image in the center of the glass tile). I recommend bringing in a couple of sizes from 2.75" x 2.75" on down to make sure they fit inside the 3x3" glass and the border you will create.

I will have all other supplies though we may have to share some of the tools.  Any questions, please let me know.

We were talking previously about chisel-tips for soldering irons.

I brought in an extra iron I had laying around...is it possible to grind the tip flat?

Caitlin Jung

Heh, I have no idea.  The other problem we might run into is that a 30W iron might not heat or reheat as quickly as a 80-100W iron but if you don't mind playing around with it, no worries. The lead-free solder I'm going to be using is much, much thicker in diameter than the solder one would use for electronics so it needs more heat to melt and a bigger tip to hold a giant bead of solder as well.

I should have two irons so not that bad of a ratio.
